This must be from the film "Blind gary davis" by Harold Becker (1964) or? The first film he played in, what I know. Soon after he moved to jamaica, queens...
You asked where this was filmed? I don't know where he is playing but the street scenes -- that's Harlem. I from NY and no other city looks like that but NY. I can see 5th ave going right uptown & I can see the east river. Oh yeah, Harlem. No Doubt.
The only way you can honestly dislike this and not find it interesting is if you were a dehydrated person in the desert expecting water and instead got fed a big mouthful of soulful blues
im trying to put together a cover for this song kind of like the animals cover of house of rising sun, if anyone has any input on what would sound cool that would be really helpful
@jyunit95 clean reverberated guitar tones and a lot of profound attitude could make this an epic electric guitar piece. you wouldn't want to complicate it at all. just one man playing the guitar whilst singing makes it difficult to adapt to a 3 or 4 piece band. the bass probably wants to sustain the root note through each chord to add depth. the drum wants to leave a lot of space by using only a few beats per line to accentuate certain areas but played really hard. thats about it. experiment.
@skullcandyman1 The reverend's guitar was a bit out of tune, but this is played in a standard tuning.not terribly hard.there should be some lessons or tabs of this song around.
In "The Mayor of McDougal Street", Dave Van Ronk talked about Rev. Davis sometimes having an odd sense of intonation (usually a bass string tuned flat). This is the first time I've really heard it; makes the sound even spookier.
This song is pretty much a look into the soul of blues if you listen to this song you can see why blues has inspired so many musicians including jack white. Listen to any of jacks songs and you can feel the same emotion that you feel in this song
This video is so haunting.I can imagine climbing on stairway and there i see him just playing and preaching blues.Cant find words i need to describe how much emotional impact this video has on me.Long live blues
@zkira67light its the documentary including jimmy page, the edge and jack white talking about their influences, how they started their career etc.And in some part of movie Jack white is talking about his staying in detroit city and talks about blues artist. There he mentions Rev, Garis and Son house-I asked for water she gave me gasoline
@zkira67light a documentary with The Edge from U2, Jack White and Jimmy Page they sit around, jam and talk about their influences and techniques and stories. Its REALLY good. look it up on google.
... perfect perfect perfect !!!... i listen to this and feel kind safe from the s#!t music (music??) that's going on nowadays... things like those kitsch, useless, retarded J.Bieber and stuff...
I played at an open jam last night. All I could think of was this song while everyone else is playing as many notes as they can get in and bending them to sound blue.
If I remember correctly, this clip was actually in colour for some parts - the Gary Davis section - preceded by a wonderful trawl through the streets of New York, settling on ratty old redbrick tenement..in the open door...up the bleak stairs...along a corridor to an open door - and there was Gary Davis, playing the song we'd been hearing.
this is real music
