The thing about my area is that it is pretty quiet, not like Manhattan, that has a lot of busy traffic and tourists. My area of the Bronx is more of a residential neighborhood, we don't get any tourists, so outside it's just people that live on the block, blasting music and opening fire hydrants! ;) But New York is great, so much going on here, and there is always something to do. Even with the lightest cash flow you can have a day trip every week. I hope you can visit someday! :)
