@texgreenfield1 I met Mike W. with kira at a bar before a firehose show. Great, accomadating people, and funny. Couldnt explain the MinuteFlag album tho.
@bluemonday716 its human nature to categorize. im not a genre nazi but this is obviously a bit funk inspired, and getting two very different genres like funk and jazz confused is something worth correcting. listen to miles davis and funkadelic. absolutely no similarity between funk and jazz
These comments are fucking dumb, Minutemen aren't SUPPOSED to BE any specific genre or class of music, they're just being themselves. This just proves to me that people these days are missing the point of punkrock... and music in general...
Most music isn't made in order to fit a specific format or genre, it's made because it sounds good.
They're not doing it for YOU, they jam econo. They do what they can, and they try to make it sound tight... Stop arguing and just listen to the goddamn music.
@Longboarder140 wtf, jazzy? nah man this is funk. a friend of mine listens to "dance gavin dance" and i listen to a lot of jazz, she tried to convince me to listen to that band cuz they "incorporate jazz mucisianship."i dont get it, why do kids these days not know jazz from funk?
oh come on, as if it makes a difference. yes, jazz and funk are two different styles of music, but they're still very much alike. the incredibly muted guitar, the accents on the bassline on the upbeat, the offbeat drums, etc. are all reminiscent of funk.
and for DGD, they use jazz scales and palmed chucking occasionally, but lack the swung drums and whatnot. i can understand where your friend is coming from, but that's like comparing thirdwave ska to actual ska: it has certain qualities that are like those of earlier styles of music, but have strayed so far away from the original.
not all "kids these days" are musically ignorant. if anything, i'd say you are for nitpicking about a punk music video. it IS punk.
@Longboarder140 Obviously its punk, but there are no jazz qualities is all I'm saying. Funk and jazz aren't similar at all! Jazz doesn't have muted guitar...It rarely has guitar in the first place! In jazz the bass walks, it doesn't slap or play 8th notes or anything, its just straight quarters. And scales...Oh geeze...I wish musicians these days would realize scales aren't the answer to everything. Jazz uses major and minor, the same scales as every style of music out there.
