This dog probably has to be put down. A well-trained dog is supposed to follow commands immediately. This dog did not do this! If I was his trainer, I'd have to put him down, because I would've lost trust in him.
@Tuxster3 This is not a fault of the dog it is a lack of proper training. If this dog didn't have a solid out then he shouldn't have been added to the force. Obviously the liability of something like this happening would be the reason why. Should the dog be retired? yes I would say so but should he be "put down" for lack of sufficient training? Weak nerves is a breed problem within the Rottie breed. Doesn't mean all Rottie are bad. Just like laziness is a generation problem within kids today. Doesn't mean all kids are lazy either. BUT this is a big problem within the Rottie breed. The character of the breed IS THE BREEDERS FAULT!!! The lack of training for the individual dog is the handlers fault. BUT the breeder should NOT be selling weak nerved dogs to people who aren't willing to put in the time to train them.
It's believed that the first ancestors of the Rottie were Roman droving dogs. They were used to herd animals. Then the people of Rottweil Germany started to use them for pulling carts of meat/produce. Then they started breeding them for protection towards WW1.
@slize- oh ya. I'd like to see you relax with a Rottie chomping down on your arm. How many bites have you taken from a dog? Even with a hidden sleeve on it hurts like hell. I can't imagine being able to sit calmly while the handler tries to get control of his dog. Handler says out, dog let's go. That's how it works. The "out" was by far always the biggest problem for alot of the police to handle. Some trainers really put in the extra time, and it showed come certification time. But that's rare.

And the character of the Rottie has been going down the tubes for a long time unfortunately. Again, I love this breed. But I refuse to ignore the problems within the breed. @slize10 How many Rotties have you worked in protection? Is that the dog you use for your guard work? I agree that a handler is a huge part of the problem. But as a whole the Rottie has a major problem within the breed. They can't compete at high level anywhere!!! Not in schutzhund,FR,MR,KNPV or anything. They do good for personal protection if you get a good one. If you have a good Rottie than you have an awesome thing. But sadly enough it's pretty rare these days. It is a problem in the breed.

@slize10 I train the police dogs. I work with the police all the time. It's VERY RARE to find a Rottie in a world level all breed competition. There is a reason for that. The best handlers in the world don't choose a Rottie for a reason. It's to hard to find a good one worth their time. Didn't think you would have video. Videos are great for critiqueing your own dog. and fixing problems. I love the Rottie. Doesn't mean I'm to stupid to recognize that the breed is in trouble, as I've said before.

@slize10 It is you who needs the info on Rotties. Info and experience comes from handling dogs, not watching the fucking Dog Whisperer. Taking a video of your dog during training isn't about putting your face on the video. It's about watching your dog and looking for flaws that can't see while you are in the moment. Plus having others with more experience watch them and being able to give their knowledge as well will only make you and the dog stronger.

@slize10 What kind of guard are you? My cousin is a K-9 officer in the military. They never wanted a Rottie because Physically they couldn't handle the endurance it takes to be a real working dog. In Sch they barely can catch the helper on the escape bite because they are so fat and slow, Very few could handle ANY of the jumps in ANY Ring sport. E-collars are not for every dog, but needed for some. The fact that you can't tell the difference says alot about what you know about training dogs.

Plus I work with a breeder who bred Rotties for 20 years for sport/competition and PP. We have experience with more than just a few Rotties, unlike you.
Rottweilers where once herding dogs like the border collies but then bred them to be more a guarddog and i agree with Blitzbok about always blaming the breed, i had a rough collie and she was very friendly but when i felt threatened she would launch forward to protect me, so its not the breed even a rough collie can attack someone

Rotts are scary dogs I have one he loves me and protects me but hates people around me specially men if they speak to long , I even jump when he barks he never used to be like this till bout a year ago when he turned 4 when he run up on a customer lucky the man jumped out the way and i managed to grab him n move him and iv had a gate put up ever since scared what he would do as they are difficult to control unlike my pit who only listens to commands

They had to do that. Would you rather have had the dog rip the guys arm off? When a dog is in defend mode it's not going to stop doing anything without a strong hand, a little pat on the butt wouldn't do it in this situation. It probably didn't even hurt the rottie because they are tough as hell.

That's in these cases when you see who is a good master who has a perfect control over the dog and who is NOT. rottweiller are very protective and calm dogs but when you can't contol him accident may happen because their weight and strenght
The problem with Rotties and every other breed for that matter is the breeders and the trainers. Good breeders don't breed weak nerve dogs and sell them to 80 yr old women. Good trainers/breeders select the right dog for the work. Unfortunately the Police normally dont have a clue about any of this. It's very hard to find a good Rottie anymore that has the courage to fight and still have solid nerves to be social. I own Dobermann and GSD. Much better selection of these breeds available. Esp GSD

@MrKp5259 I work with GSD Dobe and Rotties and Mali for personal protection, police,schutzhund and military dogs. Out of all those breeds the Rottie is the worst working dog out of all of them. The chances of finding a good one is almost slim to none. Breeders are fucking these breeds up. ALL these breeds!!!! Just with the simple fact that the gean pool for GSD is SOOOO much bigger makes it easier to get a good GSD. What do you do for a living?

This dog probably has to be put down. A well-trained dog is supposed to follow commands immediately. This dog did not do this! If I was his trainer, I'd have to put him down, because I would've lost trust in him.

@slize- oh ya. I'd like to see you relax with a Rottie chomping down on your arm. How many bites have you taken from a dog? Even with a hidden sleeve on it hurts like hell. I can't imagine being able to sit calmly while the handler tries to get control of his dog. Handler says out, dog let's go. That's how it works. The "out" was by far always the biggest problem for alot of the police to handle. Some trainers really put in the extra time, and it showed come certification time. But that's rare.

@slize10 I train the police dogs. I work with the police all the time. It's VERY RARE to find a Rottie in a world level all breed competition. There is a reason for that. The best handlers in the world don't choose a Rottie for a reason. It's to hard to find a good one worth their time. Didn't think you would have video. @slize10 What kind of guard are you? My cousin is a K-9 officer in the military. They never wanted a Rottie because Physically they couldn't handle the endurance it takes to be a real working dog. In Sch they barely can catch the helper on the escape bite because they are so fat and slow, Very few could handle ANY of the jumps in ANY Ring sport. E-collars are not for every dog, but needed for some. The fact that you can't tell the difference says alot about what you know about training dogs.

You can't answer any question asked of you, nor can you show what experience you have with working dogs of any breed, especially the Rottie. @slize10 Because I've been around enough to know that when you see the majority of Rotties coming in that are very nervous and fearful to know that they have a nerve problem. Plus I work with a breeder who bred Rotties for 20 years for sport/competition and PP. We have experience with more than just a few Rotties, unlike you.

Rottweilers where once herding dogs like the border collies but then bred them to be more a guarddog and i agree with Blitzbok about always blaming the breed, i had a rough collie and she was very friendly but when i felt threatened she would launch forward to protect me, so its not the breed even a rough collie can attack someone

Rotts are scary dogs I have one he loves me and protects me but hates people around me specially men if they speak to long , I even jump when he barks he never used to be like this till bout a year ago when he turned 4 when he run up on a customer lucky the man jumped out the way and i managed to grab him n move him and iv had a gate put up ever since scared what he would do as they are difficult to control unlike my pit who only listens to commands

They had to do that. Would you rather have had the dog rip the guys arm off? When a dog is in defend mode it's not going to stop doing anything without a strong hand, a little pat on the butt wouldn't do it in this situation. It probably didn't even hurt the rottie because they are tough as hell.

@FeefaFeef more than the "defense" mode if the rott thinks his master may be in any danger then yeah he won't stop. That's in these cases when you see who is a good master who has a perfect control over the dog and who is NOT. rottweiller are very protective and calm dogs but when you can't contol him accident may happen because their weight and strenght

The problem with Rotties and every other breed for that matter is the breeders and the trainers. Good breeders don't breed weak nerve dogs and sell them to 80 yr old women. Good trainers/breeders select the right dog for the work. Unfortunately the Police normally dont have a clue about any of this. It's very hard to find a good Rottie anymore that has the courage to fight and still have solid nerves to be social. I own Dobermann and GSD. Much better selection of these breeds available. Esp GSD

@VitoBoy2010 ...That's not true at all, YES GSD does have a different set of abilities that make them very good at what they do...But if a Rott doesn't perform, it because the breed is being used or trained wrong, not because there is a problem w/ their character....By the way I have heard of/seen many more GSD & especially Dobs that were out of control & bite someone than I have seen Rotties act like this

@MrKp5259 I work with GSD Dobe and Rotties and Mali for personal protection, police,schutzhund and military dogs. Out of all those breeds the Rottie is the worst working dog out of all of them. The chances of finding a good one is almost slim to none. Breeders are fucking these breeds up. ALL these breeds!!!! Just with the simple fact that the gean pool for GSD is SOOOO much bigger makes it easier to get a good GSD. What do you do for a living?

I simply asked you what you did for a living since you seem to have so much expertise in Rotties. I guess from your post here, that you are a Rottie breeder and trainer with 20 years of experience. @MrKp5259 The truth hurts man. Sorry. I love Dobermann. I'm not happy with how the Dobe is heading down the tubes either. But the Rottie is heading there even faster. I personally love the breed. But you need to get your head out of your ass and come to terms with reality. Do you have some video of your Rotties working? I would love to see a good quality Rottie. Honestly. All opinions aside. A good Rott should be showed off. Especially if they excist.

When a dog bites out of fear, that is a problem with their character. Almost every Rottie that used to come into the clinic would have to be muzzled to put your hands on it. A good strong nerved dog knows the difference between a threat and a non threat. Breeders should stop breeding for looks. That's the problem
