at the end of ocarina of time, he is sent back to his younger self. then he went searching for navi in the lost woods. which caused the events of majoras mask.after this game, it is theorised that the link from ocarina of time and majoras mask died in the lost woods, making him a stalfos like creature, who is believed by some to be the hero shade in twilight princess

Someone may have said this before, I don't think Skull Kid is referring to Saria when he mentions Link's scent. I got the feeling that Skull Kid got lost in the woods and turned into a Skull Kid--pretty sure he never met Saria. And Link just happened along and played the song for him.

the story is link leaves hyrule to find navi, then gets ambushed by a skull kid wearing majoras mask. you find out later that the skull kid stole that mask from the mask salesman. he takes your ocarina and somehow sets the moon on a crash course to termina, the new land you have entered. to defeat the moon and majoras mask is pretty much the whole new storyline.

I was so moved at the end. I remebered that me and my best friend played through this whole game, getting scared togheter, laughing togheter and had fun. I was the brain and my friend was the hands. I told him what he should probably do and he did it. We also were both suprised to find out that statue that Tatl points out at the begining of the game and we relized we forgot about it. Then we relized it was the butlers son. that was probably the most moving moment of a videogame I've ever seen.

My impression was that he mistook one of the twin fairies (Tatl?) for Navi, thus making this an adventure born of mistaken identity. As fun as the game was, that particular aspect of the plot was kinda weak, on the order of "Link's in a boat!" from Link's Awakening. But as trivial as how those two started, they're both very, very fun games.

the best part of this game is seeing everything come together in the end after doing all of the sidequests for the masks etc. especially the wedding after you get the wedding mask seeing as it was a literal full 3 day quest. i also really enjoyed seeing the zora band come together w/ that song in the end and the deku butler finding his son. there are too many awesome memories from when i first beat this game when it came out
