How come there are so many idiots who persist in putting stupid music over great pieces of video like this. A real shame that the dont understand we want to see and HEAR the planes.
Every plane that I like doesn't fly anymore. I love the 737-200 and they stopped flying an I love the 747SP and they also stopped. Next thing is that ill like the A380 and they will stop flying.
@Craig6070 The A380 will stop flying before we expect. The plane was designed and built too hastily and has so many problems it's not funny. That's what happens when EADS gets penis-envy over Boeing. It could've been a good plane, but envy, haste and the mentality of government-welfare killed it. Boeing doesn't accept handouts; never has, never will.
The actual outer wheels of the plane was on the grass taking off whould be a total risk because of the narrow runway and the taxiways that cross the runway
Why are you typing that the runway aint long enough for takeoff?? Its more than long enough... The 747-400 uses around 4000-4500ft at st marteen on takeoff to Curacao... The SP can easely take off on that runway...
What statement? old aircraft should be junked away, you keep servicing them, you risk lives ... Go ask IranAir: one crash per year, because they still operate 727s, 707s and 747SPs
@Byron10301 No, age of aircraft does not matter, but how they are maintained and how pilots that fly them are trained. Older aircrafts are usually used in developing countries with bad pilot training and maintenance, and thats why they crash more ofthen, but even if you send some new ones there they will crash too just as often as older ones. Also during last 10 years Iran air has had only one fatal crash, and they dont operate 707, so your comment is bullshit.
i think it is Scully Levine, crazy but a very talented pilot- also flying the 400 on another vid here doing aerobatics, I personally witnessed him doing it- amazing. So sad to see these aircraft go, Airbus are very good but lack personality.
@alex25isrory Boeing never built that many to begin with. They were too expensive. Then the performance of the 747-200 largely caught up with that of the SP, while retaining the original passenger and cargo capacities, which left no reason to order the smaller plane. Now they are mostly VIP aircraft.
South Africa Airlines??!! Really... Is this for the darkies only, or is it a way to get the darkies to the mines in a hurry to get the gold and diamonds for the Jews to stay fat off of??
True, Being born into a country doesn't say if you can fly or not. However we can say that SAA pilots have an excellent track record, excellent training and passion that extends even further than Castle Lager and therefore are rated internationally much better than most.
Amazing video, great skills. Would never have happened in the UK, they would have taken the wings off, taken the tail off, put it on a lorry, closed the motorways and driven it to the airport!
Yes, they really know how to fly. I am Brazilian and had the opportunity to fly South African Airways 6 times (4 international and 2 domestic). Once a very strong crosswind in East London. The pilot landed the aircraft perfectly. In a flight back to Rio de Janeiro, in 1987, the rain was really heavy. Perfect and safe again.
Wow! Incredible! Those South African pilots must have had specially ergonomically designed pilot-seating for that flight. It would be tough with regular seating with the pilots having BALLS the size of BASKETBALLS! Well done! Things like this should make us ALL proud to be associated with aviation - no matter what the capacity! No matter the country, no matter the continent, we should all be in wonder of what its like to be alive! Regards.
There's something really beautiful about 747's landing, and something even more amazing about them doing almost touch'n'goes, that was so cool ... and kind of sad too.
@emjaynie I agree completely! I live in Southern Arizona and saw the 747 that Evergreen modified for fighting forrest fires came over and did a demo-drop (water - not retardent) not far from I-10. Many just though "it was cool" but it was very emotional for me. I also saw an old B17 fly over while enroute to an airshow somewhere else. The sound of those radials made me tear-up. I know I know, I'm weird. lol
These were not Precautionary Approaches...the pilot was forced to land this gem which was a record holder and connection to better times when flight was something magical. As for the Evergreen 747-100, she was an ex-Pan Am. :o(
Nice to see she still flys at 40 years old. No one builds them like Boeing.
SAA now has two 747's in service, it is not entirely satisfied with the A340 and neither am I, it is okay, but the gap between the window seats and the window is just not good enough!!
AirBUST is not satisfied with the A340 either anymore. It has NO orders left and will be discontinued in 2016 or sooner.
Look for SAA to get the 747-8.
Too bad about this gem, the SP. She really kept SAA alive during the 80's with her extra range. A more appropriate memorial should have been in order (if you ask me).
@onecunningfox Yes your right. Maybe just a closed hanger where she can be preserved without decay like the Concorde. It really Pees me off to see this bird in the sand or on the tarmac with nowhere to go...
You Afrikaaners have no class anyway (JUST KIDDING). It is a real shame to see this beatuy getting a tan. Better sunning at Maluti than being torn apart in Phoenix, Arizona USA!
@HickoryThornwood I would agree with most vids as they usually have some shitty music, but this very good song is almost like made for this video, without it this vid would be much less impressive.

South African Airways one of the finest in the world......and back then they were flying the best airplane..."Boeing" fitted with the ultimate power unit "pratt & whitney" none to compare .....and still the best....
The 747SP was a short version of the 747. It was shorter and lighter, thus having a larger range. The design is of the beginning of the 70's. All 747SP are nowadays old planes. I flew on many different SAA 747s. They are a plane I will always love. I flew SAA SP from London to Cape Town non stop around the bulge of Africa ( In those they were not allowed to land anywhere in Africa apart from Iha del Sohl (Cape Verde Islands ) or Ivory Coast). So Cape Town was 13 and a half hours non stop around the bulge instead of the 11 hours or so today. I have always founs SAA to be a great airline.

I'm pissed off that so many things are automatic in terms of flying an aircraft nowadays. Pilots can get so fucking lazy. It's not flying anymore, it's pushing the right buttons at the right time. Whatever happened to the good old days when everything was manual? I mean isn't that the point of being a pilot?
msg1711 is right. Even with the most technologically advanced systems, you still do most of the flying. If that were the case, then why haven't the requirements changed? Colorblindness? Eye vision? Both still have to be perfect. And what about the event of an emergency? Do pilots hit the "save plane" button? I hope I don't see another comment like this on another video!
This is Rand airport, a tiny little airfied soutwest of OR Tambo int'l (Joburg Int'l) where the B747 was retired to as a museum piece. Very good landing on a short and narrow runway.
You can lose air speed indications in a full analog plane if your pitot tubes decide to go bye bye.... And if you get spatial disorientation and stop trusting the rest of your instruments then you are pretty much done for...
The truth is Boeing is the best and airbus is s*/¤"£$
Boeings look much better and shut the hell up about the 787 that its a shit plane or the computers do the most of the flying. Havent you seen the 787. Its a dremliner. Theres so much electronics in it. LED lights every where in the plane... The pilots do most of the flying!
Loved this video. The taller tail is due to the fact that because of the shorter length and usage of the original tail cone (it sits lower, see the creaseline in front of the tail cone) it needs a greater moment of leverage.
i think it's so sad that it won't be able to takeoff again because of the runway's length. A huge majestic plane like that is like a living thing to me. It's kind of wrong to disable them from flying, sort of like a bird. I love planes that much!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
sp stands for shortened version it doesnt have better range its just shorter. Like the Nintendo Ds, they made it smaller and more compact like the 747SP
Check again. The SP does in fact mean "special performance". The shorter fuselage means more weight and drag is eliminated, allowing for loner range and faster cruising speed. Its range is 7650 miles, compared to 6857 miles on the 747-200B. The tailfin is also taller too.
So far still the best in Africa.. Even though half their pilots are using fraudulent pilots licenses, can't speak an intelligible word of English ( the official language of all airlines and non of there education or experience can be verified.
RichieNY69: And you this how? This is not true and absolutely without basis. SAA is a good proffesional company and would be band from international airspace (And South African) if this were true.
What a load of crap. Where the hell do you get this rubbish from and how dare you spread this garbage as if its the truth. This is based on no shred of truth and its just hearsay which you have taken no time to establish the truth. The civil aviation authority is extremely strict on its air Safety and SAA as a very strict criteria for selecting pilots and there training and annual retraining of there pilots is up there with the best in the world.
The precautionary approaches were made because of the size of the runway. Any miscalculation, especially of a crosswind, would cause the pilot to miss the runway, which was only about as wide as the wheelbase anyway.
OH MY GOD! this is so awsome! if you paste this message into 5 other comments and press ALT F12 the name of your future boyfriend or girlfriend will show up on your screen!!! its SOO COOL

Both still have to be perfect. And what about the event of an emergency? Do pilots hit the "save plane" button? I hope I don't see another comment like this on another video!

Last I checked SAA still flies the 747.
Just check the Dulles Washington to JNB Route.
But does anyone know what airport this is?
This definitely isn't Johannesburg or Cape Town.
Its been a loooong time since I flew into Durban but it doesn't look like Durban either.
RichieNY69 2 years ago
This is Rand airport, a tiny little airfied soutwest of OR Tambo int'l (Joburg Int'l) where the B747 was retired to as a museum piece. Very good landing on a short and narrow runway.

I am Boeing fan, speacking of computer look what happen to air france flight 447.
Penalte1976 2 years ago
You can lose air speed indications in a full analog plane if your pitot tubes decide to go bye bye.... And if you get spatial disorientation and stop trusting the rest of your instruments then you are pretty much done for...

thats a scary thought

Children of the world... stop fighting

@KSharp320 But some are just better than others ;)

@MrOrangestring True, but that has nothing to do with nationality. It has to do with training, willingness to learn, natural skills, passion etc.

poor plane. :(

Loved this video. The taller tail is due to the fact that because of the shorter length and usage of the original tail cone (it sits lower, see the creaseline in front of the tail cone) it needs a greater moment of leverage.

Made me misty eyed. I use to fly the SP's at Pan Am.
Years ago I worked the last flight of a Tristar. We had the water cannon salute and everything. Then lost an engine 40 minutes after take off. Ooops!

Where's rand airport?

On South Africa.

i think it's so sad that it won't be able to takeoff again because of the runway's length. A huge majestic plane like that is like a living thing to me. It's kind of wrong to disable them from flying, sort of like a bird. I love planes that much!

whats the SP on the end for?
vroomba03 3 years ago
Yo mean as in 747"SP"? SP means "Special Performance", as in an increased range.
Patrickisreallygreat 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
sp stands for shortened version it doesnt have better range its just shorter. Like the Nintendo Ds, they made it smaller and more compact like the 747SP
jerseykid565 3 years ago
Check again. The SP does in fact mean "special performance". The shorter fuselage means more weight and drag is eliminated, allowing for loner range and faster cruising speed. Its range is 7650 miles, compared to 6857 miles on the 747-200B. The tailfin is also taller too.

I love SAA i had more than 100 flights with them and they are still the best for me in Africa;
Penalte1976 3 years ago
better than Air Mauritius ???? Hmmmmmmmmmm
ecrdab747 2 years ago
So far still the best in Africa.. Even though half their pilots are using fraudulent pilots licenses, can't speak an intelligible word of English ( the official language of all airlines and non of there education or experience can be verified.

RichieNY69: And you this how? This is not true and absolutely without basis. SAA is a good proffesional company and would be band from international airspace (And South African) if this were true.
NorSaff 2 years ago
it is true, we have a friend that is a commercial pilot and flies domestic, he even told us some cases of people doing that.
poonageproductions 2 years ago
What a load of crap. Where the hell do you get this rubbish from and how dare you spread this garbage as if its the truth. This is based on no shred of truth and its just hearsay which you have taken no time to establish the truth. The civil aviation authority is extremely strict on its air Safety and SAA as a very strict criteria for selecting pilots and there training and annual retraining of there pilots is up there with the best in the world.

whats the precautionary approach?
togi4661763 3 years ago
The precautionary approaches were made because of the size of the runway. Any miscalculation, especially of a crosswind, would cause the pilot to miss the runway, which was only about as wide as the wheelbase anyway.
