  • Pity about the music. I wanted to hear those engines...

  • uggliset plane

  • I love the a380 best aircraft in the world but i would like boeing to make a747sp ng!!!

  • There's the A380 now, so airlines can ditch their 747s

  • I know where one flys, Geneva, a Saudi 747SP! I have seen it!

  • thats insane, thats hardly enough for a few cessnas not a 747...and the best 747 there is the SP

  • awesome vid + 1a song.

Love the unique roaring of those engines!

  • Tight runway and a light crosswind? nice job SAA pilots!

  • these things flew into the 2000s ? wow

  • RIP 747 Short Plane D:

  • gear up ?

  • She's a runner!

  • thats why its called the 747 Special Performance

  • How come there are so many idiots who persist in putting stupid music over great pieces of video like this. A real shame that the dont understand we want to see and HEAR the planes.

  • thumbs up if you thought its crashing at 2:14

  • cool

  • Iloved the music and the video****

  • Every plane that I like doesn't fly anymore. I love the 737-200 and they stopped flying an I love the 747SP and they also stopped. Next thing is that ill like the A380 and they will stop flying.

  • @Craig6070 The A380 will stop flying before we expect. The plane was designed and built too hastily and has so many problems it's not funny. That's what happens when EADS gets penis-envy over Boeing. It could've been a good plane, but envy, haste and the mentality of government-welfare killed it. Boeing doesn't accept handouts; never has, never will.

  • The actual outer wheels of the plane was on the grass taking off whould be a total risk because of the narrow runway and the taxiways that cross the runway

  • go to watch?v=bq_Xhvn1UlE&feature=feedrec_grec_index for real sound

  • At least it's preserved for all time for future generations to marvel & enjoy.

  • HELLO , MY FRIEND PILOT , WERE IS IT ??

  • end of an era for SAA

  • Why are you typing that the runway aint long enough for takeoff?? Its more than long enough... The 747-400 uses around 4000-4500ft at st marteen on takeoff to Curacao... The SP can easely take off on that runway...

  • South African Airways rules the skies!

  • this plane reminds me of a chode

  • A lot of dirt was sucked into both inboard engines by trust reverser from 02:26 - that probably fried them.

  • Waste of a fine Aircraft just to make a statement.

  • What statement? old aircraft should be junked away, you keep servicing them, you risk lives ... Go ask IranAir: one crash per year, because they still operate 727s, 707s and 747SPs

  • @Byron10301 No, age of aircraft does not matter, but how they are maintained and how pilots that fly them are trained. Older aircrafts are usually used in developing countries with bad pilot training and maintenance, and thats why they crash more ofthen, but even if you send some new ones there they will crash too just as often as older ones. Also during last 10 years Iran air has had only one fatal crash, and they dont operate 707, so your comment is bullshit.

  • Nice

  • i think it is Scully Levine, crazy but a very talented pilot- also flying the 400 on another vid here doing aerobatics, I personally witnessed him doing it- amazing. So sad to see these aircraft go, Airbus are very good but lack personality.

  • @jimmychoo1967 it was Dennis Spence

  • why can only 12 fly ?

  • @alex25isrory Boeing never built that many to begin with. They were too expensive. Then the performance of the 747-200 largely caught up with that of the SP, while retaining the original passenger and cargo capacities, which left no reason to order the smaller plane. Now they are mostly VIP aircraft.

  • Sad to see another one down. From all experiences, These planes are more top class than any of the disapointing airbus products.

  • why they dont use it any more???

  • why do people clap everytime a plane lands. it drives me nutts. if somebody clapped at me doing my job i would punch them in the face.

  • South Africa Airlines??!! Really... Is this for the darkies only, or is it a way to get the darkies to the mines in a hurry to get the gold and diamonds for the Jews to stay fat off of??

  • @ILIGANO fuck you

  • @ILIGANO Its to take idiots like you to hell quickly.

  • the end of an Era...with perfect accompanying soundtrack...

  • With a runway that short, I am certain that the pilot wanted all factors considered to allow for a perfect landing without any margin of error.

  • Idiot can't land in a crosswind.

  • Good thing there are flight sims, to keep these beautiful aircraft alive.

  • Does anyone know what happened to the two Qantas 747SP.

  • @nww69 they went to the USA

  • Does anyone know what happened to the two Qantas 747SP

  • i almost cried JK!

  • Thats too bad, a great machine like that needs to be in the air!

  • Very nice vid! Just sub'd. Please do the same. THANKS!

  • Get rid of the music man!!

  • this baby can takeoff from this runway by using JATO (for those who don't know what JATO is... Jet Assisted Take Off)

  • shitty music!

  • i want it :(

  • True, Being born into a country doesn't say if you can fly or not. However we can say that SAA pilots have an excellent track record, excellent training and passion that extends even further than Castle Lager and therefore are rated internationally much better than most.

  • why didn't the cameraguy use a tripod?????

  • Amazing video, great skills. Would never have happened in the UK, they would have taken the wings off, taken the tail off, put it on a lorry, closed the motorways and driven it to the airport!

  • please, why cannot more fly this airplane? which future it will have?

  • LOVE You SAA

  • Very nice man.

  • The 10 best airlines in Africa:

    youtube.com/watch?v=9uppm_imv2U

  • i know there good

I Think the pilot flying the play is CPT skully veljuen not sure but he is the only south African pilot crazy enought to do this.

My dad works for South Afican airways so he knows

love 747 they are awsome planes they fly by wire not by electrical wire like Airbus do

  • @cod6Kill You do know that the electornic wire airbus uses, is called Fly by Wire...

  • A beautiful and rare bird.....thanks.

  • ELLO MY FRIEND , WERE IT IS ??

  • TOGA it is!!

  • big isn't always sweet, but in this case I can say it's a nice big sweaty.

  • Just a pity - she should have been painted in the colours of the old SAA / SAL because she served most of her time in that era.

  • Yes, they really know how to fly. I am Brazilian and had the opportunity to fly South African Airways 6 times (4 international and 2 domestic). Once a very strong crosswind in East London. The pilot landed the aircraft perfectly. In a flight back to Rio de Janeiro, in 1987, the rain was really heavy. Perfect and safe again.

  • Wow! Incredible! Those South African pilots must have had specially ergonomically designed pilot-seating for that flight. It would be tough with regular seating with the pilots having BALLS the size of BASKETBALLS! Well done! Things like this should make us ALL proud to be associated with aviation - no matter what the capacity! No matter the country, no matter the continent, we should all be in wonder of what its like to be alive! Regards.

  • For those who wonder why the music is on this, it is a well known fact that aviation and rock-and-roll go together, especially Air Force.

  • Music from Scorpion.

  • I think anyone who doesn't like the B-747SP probably has a bad case of Shrimbies.

  • porque música ???? (why music ????)

  • WHY this music ??

  • There's something really beautiful about 747's landing, and something even more amazing about them doing almost touch'n'goes, that was so cool ... and kind of sad too.

  • @emjaynie I agree completely! I live in Southern Arizona and saw the 747 that Evergreen modified for fighting forrest fires came over and did a demo-drop (water - not retardent) not far from I-10. Many just though "it was cool" but it was very emotional for me. I also saw an old B17 fly over while enroute to an airshow somewhere else. The sound of those radials made me tear-up. I know I know, I'm weird. lol

  • @flapsdwn

These were not Precautionary Approaches...the pilot was forced to land this gem which was a record holder and connection to better times when flight was something magical. As for the Evergreen 747-100, she was an ex-Pan Am. :o(

Nice to see she still flys at 40 years old. No one builds them like Boeing.

  • Anyone know if it's still on display at Rand? I live about 10 minutes from Rand (depending on traffic).

  • Legend SA aerobatic pilot Scully Levin piloted the machine to its resting place....I believe.

  • SAA now has two 747's in service, it is not entirely satisfied with the A340 and neither am I, it is okay, but the gap between the window seats and the window is just not good enough!!

  • @SouthAfricanAirways1

AirBUST is not satisfied with the A340 either anymore. It has NO orders left and will be discontinued in 2016 or sooner.

Look for SAA to get the 747-8.

Too bad about this gem, the SP. She really kept SAA alive during the 80's with her extra range. A more appropriate memorial should have been in order (if you ask me).

  • @onecunningfox Yes your right. Maybe just a closed hanger where she can be preserved without decay like the Concorde. It really Pees me off to see this bird in the sand or on the tarmac with nowhere to go...

  • @SouthAfricanAirways1

You Afrikaaners have no class anyway (JUST KIDDING). It is a real shame to see this beatuy getting a tan. Better sunning at Maluti than being torn apart in Phoenix, Arizona USA!

Take care my friend and Godspeed.

  • what a beut of an aircraft!

  • Beautifull video 5/5!!!

  • Is there a version without the music? It wrecks the whole thing.

  • please......no fucking music.....just engine sound is all we want

  • dude, at least he didn't choose one of those annoying youtube songs ... but i agree, engine sound is better

  • @willsco76 exactly, i hate this bullshit

  • @HickoryThornwood I would agree with most vids as they usually have some shitty music, but this very good song is almost like made for this video, without it this vid would be much less impressive.

  • all king of 747´s almos fly bi it self.....

just ask me to me....w/2230 hrs flying for JAL.......now I´m 78 and retired

I,m really do not understand this video, looks like the plane have some kind of problem,....biiiiig problem

  • 2230, shit i have more time teaching in cessna's than that

  • Simplemente impresionante ¿es un montaje o realmente es lo que vemos?, no lo tengo nada claro...

  • Esto es real. Yo estuve ahí. Créeme.

  • Still love the SPs, sad to see them go.

  • Why? To me they just look strange. Such a wide wings with 4 engines and then just this short fat body. Not really pretty

  • Unbelievable skill of the pilots!

  • oh i see in the description it says "only 12 747SP can flight."........XD

  • Enjoy a little piece of Everett, Washington! The Boeing Company and Snohomish County send their regards and respects.

  • Very nice flying there Captain Spence

  • i dont get it, is it to old already, and why is it landing there?...

  • Look like younger brother from 747. lol

  • Forty-five 747SP aircraft were built between 1974 and 1989. As of December 2008, 17 are still flying, 16 have been scrapped, and 12 are in storage, awaiting salvage or on display in museums - Wiki

  • I have flown many times with SAL/SAA...Jhb to Lon and Jhb to NY and Ny to Jhb....747 sp and 747 super b...this was a world class airline back then ! is it still a world class airline ?

  • @ArzeHoole Oh yes, just the A340 will NEVER take the place of their amazing 747's!

  • South African Airways one of the finest in the world......and back then they were flying the best airplane..."Boeing" fitted with the ultimate power unit "pratt & whitney" none to compare .....and still the best....

  • Ese wey no se queria retirar, por eso fue que no quiso aterrizar, le daba nostalgia saber que era el ultima, jajaja

  • why was it the last flight did it crash alot?

  • The 747SP was a short version of the 747. It was shorter and lighter, thus having a larger range. The design is of the beginning of the 70's. All 747SP are nowadays old planes. In 1987, it's successor the 747-400 was launched and the 747SP discontinued. During the apartheid South African Airlines had only 747SP in service, as it was the only way to fly from non-stop from South Africa to Europe... As far as I know, only IranAir operates a 747SP for commercial flights.

  • If it crashed a lot it wouldn't be flying..............

I think 747's have a recommend lifespan of 30 years but the generally the older variants such as the SP were retired sooner due to the inefficiency of the engines, i recalled Qantas retired there's around the 2000 mark due to the new efficient 744ERS replacing them

  • I flew on many different SAA 747s. They are a plane I will always love. I flew SAA SP from London to Cape Town non stop around the bulge of Africa ( In those they were not allowed to land anywhere in Africa apart from Iha del Sohl (Cape Verde Islands ) or Ivory Coast). So Cape Town was 13 and a half hours non stop around the bulge instead of the 11 hours or so today. I have always founs SAA to be a great airline.

  • @cattleman6420012000 y u love 747sp i love 747-400 and 747-800i

  • My favourite is always the 747-400. I look forward to the 747-800. It is nice that they carry on with 747s, as I am a real fan.

  • There is no such thing as the 747-800 or 747-800i it is called the 747-8...

  • its the same thing trust me i no alot about planes im like a master

  • So do I and if you know so much about planes you will know that a 747-800 does not exist... it is called the 747-8 for a reason

  • I was there that day.. Quite awesome.

  • Quite the narrow runway at that. Looks no wider the the fuselage!

  • 747 sp is TINY

  • oh man that was hard, basicaly stalled at the end there.

  • Yes it was freakin hard.

  • msg1711 is right. Even with the most technologically advanced systems, you still do most of the flying. If that were the case, then why haven't the requirements changed? Colorblindness? Eye vision? Both still have to be perfect. And what about the event of an emergency? Do pilots hit the "save plane" button? I hope I don't see another comment like this on another video!

  • Last I checked SAA still flies the 747.

Just check the Dulles Washington to JNB Route.

But does anyone know what airport this is?

This definitely isn't Johannesburg or Cape Town.

Its been a loooong time since I flew into Durban but it doesn't look like Durban either.

  • This is Rand airport, a tiny little airfied soutwest of OR Tambo int'l (Joburg Int'l) where the B747 was retired to as a museum piece. Very good landing on a short and narrow runway.

  • I am Boeing fan, speacking of computer look what happen to air france flight 447.

  • You can lose air speed indications in a full analog plane if your pitot tubes decide to go bye bye.... And if you get spatial disorientation and stop trusting the rest of your instruments then you are pretty much done for...

  • thats a scary thought

  • where they keep the b747??

  • Children of the world... stop fighting

The truth is Boeing is the best and airbus is s*/¤"£$

Boeings look much better and shut the hell up about the 787 that its a shit plane or the computers do the most of the flying. Havent you seen the 787. Its a dremliner. Theres so much electronics in it. LED lights every where in the plane... The pilots do most of the flying!

  • Dam good SAA pilots, these guys know how to fly

  • @SApilot11123 Pretty much everyone from every country who flies commercial jets know how to fly.

  • @KSharp320 But some are just better than others ;)

  • @MrOrangestring True, but that has nothing to do with nationality. It has to do with training, willingness to learn, natural skills, passion etc.

  • @KSharp320 jelous down hehehe

  • wonderful

  • i love the plane!

  • awesome !

  • whats SP stand for?????

  • special performance

  • sad what a wonderful plane. i used to see it on my travels from the US.

    very sad....

  • Last flight .... sad... The Monster will fall asleep forever....

  • poor plane. :(

  • Loved this video. The taller tail is due to the fact that because of the shorter length and usage of the original tail cone (it sits lower, see the creaseline in front of the tail cone) it needs a greater moment of leverage.

  • Made me misty eyed. I use to fly the SP's at Pan Am.

Years ago I worked the last flight of a Tristar. We had the water cannon salute and everything. Then lost an engine 40 minutes after take off. Ooops!

  • Where's rand airport?

  • On South Africa.

  • i think it's so sad that it won't be able to takeoff again because of the runway's length. A huge majestic plane like that is like a living thing to me. It's kind of wrong to disable them from flying, sort of like a bird. I love planes that much!

  • me too

  • whats the SP on the end for?

  • Yo mean as in 747"SP"? SP means "Special Performance", as in an increased range.

  • Check again. The SP does in fact mean "special performance". The shorter fuselage means more weight and drag is eliminated, allowing for loner range and faster cruising speed. Its range is 7650 miles, compared to 6857 miles on the 747-200B. The tailfin is also taller too.

  • I love SAA i had more than 100 flights with them and they are still the best for me in Africa;

  • better than Air Mauritius ???? Hmmmmmmmmmm

  • So far still the best in Africa.. Even though half their pilots are using fraudulent pilots licenses, can't speak an intelligible word of English ( the official language of all airlines and non of there education or experience can be verified.

  • Comment removed

  • RichieNY69: And you this how? This is not true and absolutely without basis. SAA is a good proffesional company and would be band from international airspace (And South African) if this were true.

  • it is true, we have a friend that is a commercial pilot and flies domestic, he even told us some cases of people doing that.

  • What a load of crap. Where the hell do you get this rubbish from and how dare you spread this garbage as if its the truth. This is based on no shred of truth and its just hearsay which you have taken no time to establish the truth. The civil aviation authority is extremely strict on its air Safety and SAA as a very strict criteria for selecting pilots and there training and annual retraining of there pilots is up there with the best in the world.

  • whats the precautionary approach?

  • The precautionary approaches were made because of the size of the runway. Any miscalculation, especially of a crosswind, would cause the pilot to miss the runway, which was only about as wide as the wheelbase anyway.

  • cool

  • I remember a CPYJNB in this plane on a jump seat, i want to visit the museum now.

Thank you for sharing this excellent video.
