The Mig 29 is well know for its structual problems. That's why Russia has grounded 75% of its fleet.
Besides what PeePee said the f-15 does not have the maneuverability or hardware to take on an OVT 29. The original mig-29's were built to compete with the F-15 . The original f-15's were built to combat the MIG 25 Foxbat. If this were a regular mig-29 you could be right.
You forget that Yugoslavia was under international trade embargo and that it's economy suffered greatly. As for the army, the greatest impact was felt in the Yugoslav Air Force. A lot of airplanes flew with no functioning radars, and the ones that flew were badly maintained. Unsufficient fuel reserves was also a problem. Because of that airplanes scrambled into the air only when radars picked up NATO planes, so NATO planes were already in the Yugoslav airspace as Yugoslav planes were taking off.
OMFG, why is that when I visit a jet mov theres always a discussion on which fighter is the best Rus or Usa? Can no one simply enjoy the mov anymore? Plus, all these discussions are quite pointless anyway.

You still have to control the UAV from the ground. it might see targets and identify them but will it wait for the right moment to fire? The control will require AI or a ground control station. AI isnt made yet and the ground control sttion can be destroyed in cruise missile attack unless its mobile and currently all ground cotrols for UAV are stationary. WHile UAV is a great concept, you still need a human on battlefield to more accurately asses the situation. days of all-out wars are over.
"Spetsnazovets" - current UAVs, yes, they need a GCS, but the next gen in trials now, no, they are truely autonomous. AI is reaching a critical mass and with results over the last few years, its not far off. as to detecting a mobile target, thats a little harder, but fix sites like ADUs, its certainly possible now. technology to fly using AI been around for a few years, but not enough trust for weapons. taranis does not need GCS. much of the tech is using bio-inspired AI, learns by experience.
"Spetsnazovets" - we've had the older type of AI, more symbolic, flying for years, back as far late 80's. some when know programmes, but computing tech needed to catch-up, it has and much more. the AI is not like in the movies, STEALTH, but the autonomous wingman project uses natural lang and speech synth so manned can give orders verbally in military speak and they dont download MP3's.
"Spetsnazovets" - as i said we had a tactical decision aid back in the late 80's, which could fly a mission under pilot authorisation. all pilot had to do was either agree or cancel current options, and aid would re-plan. it had defence and attack options, but pilot would release weapons. they where called 'Pilot's Associate' (UDA) and 'Mission management aid' (UK) research programmes, PACT (CogPit), RPA, Crewman Associate + a tank version
"Spetsnazovets" - thats why the autonomous wingman, the manned component stands off, identifes and designates target, whilst autonomous UCAVs fly in to do job. though an a-life tech from a games company back in the 90's lead to some very exciting results, CyberLife, which even out-witted instructors used to train it. it got cut in defence cuts as deemed too futuristic and we only had so much money for r&d. the UK is using its new Skynet sates to control it new UCAVs.
over-the-horizon radar sees targets like F-22 from over 500km away so a pack of S-300 or better S-400 can be fired using the low-freq over-the-horizon radar for guidance. RAM are very UV sensitive (B-2 requires a hangar with a climate control system). I'm not bagging F-22 as its a good modern fighter thats one of the top in the world. But judging aircraft only on its avionics and stealth is not seeing a complete pic. also most russian low-freq radars are mobile so wacking them is guess work.
OTH radar may(detection by the S-400 is still a claim) be able to see the raptor but
again, if the raptor is jamming,or the radar is going have to deal with that , but truthfully this is more SEAD work than anything else, the aircraft fighthing this battle, F-16s ,F-18s and EA-18s, maybe F-15E
it's not really guess work, they still have to emit an signal
well
I do agree on that aspect, that avionics and stealth are just part of the equation for a good aircraft, leaves out the essentials
planes start falling then, those the jammers would installed ricky tick tick
what your opinion on the pure fighter concept
alot of the designers and the Fighter mafia as we call them were not happy with the conversion of pure fighters like F-14s, F-15s and the F-22 from fighter to Fighter/air to ground capabilites,
The more capabilities the better. Su-35 is an air superiority fighter yet it can do low-altitude penetration with terrain following avoidance and can do air-to-ground very well. Its cheaper and easier to design multirole plane. Its the integration and initial abilities. You have to stright away design it to be ablo to do things. F-16 wasnt meant to do it and thats why F-111 was lots better in Air-to-ground in Desert Storm. today it'd do well with modern systems.
"Spetsnazovets" - interesting. many keep thinking its just one element or another thats makes a good a/c, but its a toolkit of capabilities. stealth is just one element, internal stores another, reducing drag and thus detection. but the F22 has a passive capability beyond most, but we all know the reason for flying at alt, for endurance and limiting exposure by manouvrer. the new decision aids are just starting to come on-board, this will be one the more effective tools.
"Spetsnazovets" - the su-35 whilst having many new features, will suffer from the inheritant problem in detection, even at low level and its worse enemy, drag. do you know why so few su-35's have been built and why so many have crashed or in spare parts. i heard whilst its a new a/c, its built on much from the SU-27, so its built on a good pedigree, why so few when some many other Russian jets have come into service over the period.
Easy answer. Not many Su-35s crashed if any. There wasnt a big number built yet due to shortage of funds as Russia struggles to rebuild itself from ruins after disaster named Communism and Boris Yeltsin with 83 years of rule.
Detectability? EVERY aircraft can be detected in all sorts of ways. Drag? well its unrefuelled flight range is about 4000km, manuverability better then Su-27, better radar and ECMs, more weapons, refuelling capabiliy. They are in production, just slow. Not enough money.
"Spetsnazovets" - at least 3 su-35 have crashed, the most notable at paris a/s 2002, with rumours of a few others. but in that time Russia still bought and built a number of other lesser a/c over the SU-35, why.
of course every a/c is detectable give time and equip. Drag from external payloads, is a fuel killer at low alt, plus it increases RCS. even russia is now playing with internal payloads concept on the PAK-FA, as well as China.
"sukhoi235" - an SU-35 crashed in Moscow in 2002, near Ramenskoye military airfield, another was reported to have crashed in 2003 in flight tests and there has been another similar report, as well as this Su-37 crash. and thats not to mention the SU-27 crashes.
"verde" - though the F22 has jammers, will it use them? it may not been absolutely detectable, but they now know your there and put other resources up to find you. i liked the idea in a recent study of using UCAVs as jammers, while F22/35's spilled quietly in to perform. more on the SEAD end. have you heard of the BAe work on active camouflage, looks amazing, reducing problems from MANPADS and visual engagement.
I really dont envy the airframe that gets stuck with doing SEAD for the 6th generation of fighters , they are going to have their work cut out for them
okay what's the catch for active camo
we all know that every advantage on the battefield has it's disadvantage
"verde" - SEAD is the current primary task for UCAVs for both US & UK. it will be some time before reactive fighter missions use UCAVs. MOD recently had a trail with a tornado tasking 3 UCAVs for a SEAD mission, went very well, with another few planned this year. its part of the autonomous wingman project, i believe the US is involved as an observer in the UK trails. taranis is designed for SEAD, the size of a hawk, but greater range. the X45/7 are capable of 15+ G turn rates.
with SAMs getting better and better, I think eventually we going to adopt the stand-off concept for SEAD. I actually looked all the anti-radiation missiles in service
none of the them have cold kill capability
cold kill is the ability to hunt sams even if they powered down, right now, unless the SAM emits a signal, it's virtually invisible to hunter
"verde" - for hunting, we have a joint US & UK project looking at persistant muntions, flying UAVs in a swarm. they had a baby one at farnborough this year. some of the swarm have different capabilities, say a comms node, the others weapons platforms. again trails are just about to start, Ultra and BAe are leads. smaller versions for urban ops, larger version of battlefield. talk was of 6 to 10 hours ops. also another project already out, unguarded muntions, dropped close to FEBA to guard.
"verde" - BAe alarm is designed to such type of missions. used in Iraq. they shut down ADUs as allies flow by, turned on to engage at distance, but alarms floated, awaited and then took out ADUs. if alarm reached fail safe distance, then took out secondary target. QinetiQ demoed an 84 hour capable UAV, so await until that gets weaponised.
"verde" - the biggest problem identified was info overload for pilots and high G force in reactive manouvers. UCAVs wont suffer from the same problem. we been autonomous flying low level (76m) since early 90's, but its always died in defence cuts as too futeristic, but not now. we have a 6 year DTC program looking specifically at autonomous behaviour with taranis flying in 2010, but its already flown in other forms.
"verde" - true, thats why the future of a/c design is about to completely change. as we all know 50% of an a/c is for the pilot, thats why the taranis is the size of a hawk for bombing. imagine what it could do if UCAVs were designed the same size as say the F22, the range and payload with a 20+ G capability. a paper to congress suggested huge savings on future battles, thats if UCAVs perform at least as good as current manned.
"verde" - MOD and BAe have got really excited over this, putting alot of funding its way. theres always been a problem low flying of skylining, not any-more if its to be believed. some of the pics which appear in a R&D journal showed an a/c there one minute, gone the next. its visual not radar, so still stealth, it will help with MANPADs in low flying. there are alot of new toys just starting to come through, even a new tactical decision aid to advise pilots, that can also fly the mission.
They wanted to make an aircraft that has speed and ceiling of MiG25 and manuverability and effectiveness of MiG21. later they realised that they cant do it so they left speed and ceiling lower and concentrated on manuverability and combat effectiveness. shape was inspired by MiG25 that is true.
as far as low-freq, it's radar it still has emit it's signal to track and fire , even in wolf pack configuration, 1 site supplying targeting data to the other,s that one site is going to get whacked eventually
IR targeting and electro-optical sighting are point blank measures
Just to clear a few points MiG-21 was the benchmark for F15 design. MiG-29/Su-27 were benchmarked against F-15, MiG29 is russias F-16 while Su-27 was more agains F-15. USA does spend LOTS on avionics but have found that Russia rarely bothers to instantly create its own version instead asymmetrically responding (ie stealth plane? low-freq long-wave radar. works wonders and sees them well). If someone wantes to discuss aircraft in general without insults message me and we'll chat ;)
Great at airshows... In an engagement however....meh.

Not easy whatsoever. Say Russia built these in number, we'd be fucked.
For it's price, no other country has somthing that could outperform it.
Cost wise, you could build OVT's at a ratio of 4 to 1 to the US F22, or 2-1 of our F-15's.
Feel lucky that russia hasn't an economy and cant build them. And that the US economy will Drown out with us having plenty of High performance craft.
peepeevagi 2 years ago 3
Besides what PeePee said the f-15 does not have the maneuverability or hardware to take on an OVT 29. The original mig-29's were built to compete with the F-15 . The original f-15's were built to combat the MIG 25 Foxbat. If this were a regular mig-29 you could be right.

Thank you, the same to you! And what was during the Kosovo war? USAF F-15Cs shot down four Yugoslav MiG-29s! Also ill?
cyberarmy007 2 years ago
How about this cyberarmy007..
Even if F-15s and MiG-29s can actually give a good fight.. and they have no big difference in capabilities
as of reality..
USA spends more money on single F-15
Than any of Russia or Yugolsav MiG-29s
What would you expect from a MiG-29
funded by $2 million
compared to F-15 maintained in $5 million?
Nicom47 2 years ago
You forget that Yugoslavia was under international trade embargo and that it's economy suffered greatly. As for the army, the greatest impact was felt in the Yugoslav Air Force. A lot of airplanes flew with no functioning radars, and the ones that flew were badly maintained. Unsufficient fuel reserves was also a problem. Because of that airplanes scrambled into the air only when radars picked up NATO planes, so NATO planes were already in the Yugoslav airspace as Yugoslav planes were taking off.

Spetsnazovets 3 years ago
"Spetsnazovets" - current UAVs, yes, they need a GCS, but the next gen in trials now, no, they are truely autonomous. AI is reaching a critical mass and with results over the last few years, its not far off. as to detecting a mobile target, thats a little harder, but fix sites like ADUs, its certainly possible now. technology to fly using AI been around for a few years, but not enough trust for weapons. taranis does not need GCS. much of the tech is using bio-inspired AI, learns by experience.
simrobin 3 years ago
"Spetsnazovets" - we've had the older type of AI, more symbolic, flying for years, back as far late 80's. some when know programmes, but computing tech needed to catch-up, it has and much more. the AI is not like in the movies, STEALTH, but the autonomous wingman project uses natural lang and speech synth so manned can give orders verbally in military speak and they dont download MP3's.
simrobin 3 years ago
"Spetsnazovets" - as i said we had a tactical decision aid back in the late 80's, which could fly a mission under pilot authorisation. all pilot had to do was either agree or cancel current options, and aid would re-plan. it had defence and attack options, but pilot would release weapons. they where called 'Pilot's Associate' (UDA) and 'Mission management aid' (UK) research programmes, PACT (CogPit), RPA, Crewman Associate + a tank version
simrobin 3 years ago
"Spetsnazovets" - thats why the autonomous wingman, the manned component stands off, identifes and designates target, whilst autonomous UCAVs fly in to do job. though an a-life tech from a games company back in the 90's lead to some very exciting results, CyberLife, which even out-witted instructors used to train it. it got cut in defence cuts as deemed too futuristic and we only had so much money for r&d. the UK is using its new Skynet sates to control it new UCAVs.
simrobin 3 years ago
over-the-horizon radar sees targets like F-22 from over 500km away so a pack of S-300 or better S-400 can be fired using the low-freq over-the-horizon radar for guidance.
Spetsnazovets 3 years ago
OTH radar may(detection by the S-400 is still a claim) be able to see the raptor but
again, if the raptor is jamming,or the radar is going have to deal with that , but truthfully this is more SEAD work than anything else, the aircraft fighthing this battle, F-16s ,F-18s and EA-18s, maybe F-15E
it's not really guess work, they still have to emit an signal
well
I do agree on that aspect, that avionics and stealth are just part of the equation for a good aircraft, leaves out the essentials
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
Essentials being
range
weapons capability
ease of maintenance
Thrust to weight ratio(ties in with engines)
and weight
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
Yeah. Last time i looked at the specs the ECM aircraft havent had the 2-metre long wave-length jammers installed.
Also Speed and ceiling are among those. I think it was a step-back when USA didnt pursue a 2500km/h speed.
Spetsnazovets 3 years ago
planes start falling then, those the jammers would installed ricky tick tick
what your opinion on the pure fighter concept
alot of the designers and the Fighter mafia as we call them were not happy with the conversion of pure fighters like F-14s, F-15s and the F-22 from fighter to Fighter/air to ground capabilites,
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
The more capabilities the better. Su-35 is an air superiority fighter yet it can do low-altitude penetration with terrain following avoidance and can do air-to-ground very well. Its cheaper and easier to design multirole plane. Its the integration and initial abilities. You have to stright away design it to be ablo to do things. F-16 wasnt meant to do it and thats why F-111 was lots better in Air-to-ground in Desert Storm. today it'd do well with modern systems.
Spetsnazovets 3 years ago
what's about the 60s vintage aircraft flying today,
some it's cheaper to upgrade the avionics, engines ,and weapons then buy a new aircraft
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
"Spetsnazovets" - interesting. many keep thinking its just one element or another thats makes a good a/c, but its a toolkit of capabilities. stealth is just one element, internal stores another, reducing drag and thus detection. but the F22 has a passive capability beyond most, but we all know the reason for flying at alt, for endurance and limiting exposure by manouvrer. the new decision aids are just starting to come on-board, this will be one the more effective tools.
simrobin 3 years ago
"Spetsnazovets" - the su-35 whilst having many new features, will suffer from the inheritant problem in detection, even at low level and its worse enemy, drag. do you know why so few su-35's have been built and why so many have crashed or in spare parts. i heard whilst its a new a/c, its built on much from the SU-27, so its built on a good pedigree, why so few when some many other Russian jets have come into service over the period.
simrobin 3 years ago
Easy answer. Not many Su-35s crashed if any. There wasnt a big number built yet due to shortage of funds as Russia struggles to rebuild itself from ruins after disaster named Communism and Boris Yeltsin with 83 years of rule.
Detectability? EVERY aircraft can be detected in all sorts of ways. Drag? well its unrefuelled flight range is about 4000km, manuverability better then Su-27, better radar and ECMs, more weapons, refuelling capabiliy. They are in production, just slow. Not enough money.
Spetsnazovets 3 years ago 3
"Spetsnazovets" - at least 3 su-35 have crashed, the most notable at paris a/s 2002, with rumours of a few others. but in that time Russia still bought and built a number of other lesser a/c over the SU-35, why.
of course every a/c is detectable give time and equip. Drag from external payloads, is a fuel killer at low alt, plus it increases RCS. even russia is now playing with internal payloads concept on the PAK-FA, as well as China.
simrobin 3 years ago
there were no Su-35 crashes...
One Su-37 crashed...
sukhoi235 3 years ago
"sukhoi235" - an SU-35 crashed in Moscow in 2002, near Ramenskoye military airfield, another was reported to have crashed in 2003 in flight tests and there has been another similar report, as well as this Su-37 crash. and thats not to mention the SU-27 crashes.
simrobin 3 years ago
Ok, i found on the internet about that crash in 2002, but i haven`t found any info about crash in 2003?
sukhoi235 3 years ago
"verde" - though the F22 has jammers, will it use them? it may not been absolutely detectable, but they now know your there and put other resources up to find you. i liked the idea in a recent study of using UCAVs as jammers, while F22/35's spilled quietly in to perform. more on the SEAD end. have you heard of the BAe work on active camouflage, looks amazing, reducing problems from MANPADS and visual engagement.
simrobin 3 years ago
UCAV as jammers is an interesting concept
I really dont envy the airframe that gets stuck with doing SEAD for the 6th generation of fighters , they are going to have their work cut out for them
okay what's the catch for active camo
we all know that every advantage on the battefield has it's disadvantage
with the F-22 , it's the price tag
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
"verde" - SEAD is the current primary task for UCAVs for both US & UK. it will be some time before reactive fighter missions use UCAVs. MOD recently had a trail with a tornado tasking 3 UCAVs for a SEAD mission, went very well, with another few planned this year. its part of the autonomous wingman project, i believe the US is involved as an observer in the UK trails. taranis is designed for SEAD, the size of a hawk, but greater range. the X45/7 are capable of 15+ G turn rates.
simrobin 3 years ago
with SAMs getting better and better, I think eventually we going to adopt the stand-off concept for SEAD. I actually looked all the anti-radiation missiles in service
none of the them have cold kill capability
cold kill is the ability to hunt sams even if they powered down, right now, unless the SAM emits a signal, it's virtually invisible to hunter
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
"verde" - for hunting, we have a joint US & UK project looking at persistant muntions, flying UAVs in a swarm. they had a baby one at farnborough this year. some of the swarm have different capabilities, say a comms node, the others weapons platforms. again trails are just about to start, Ultra and BAe are leads. smaller versions for urban ops, larger version of battlefield. talk was of 6 to 10 hours ops. also another project already out, unguarded muntions, dropped close to FEBA to guard.
simrobin 3 years ago
"verde" - BAe alarm is designed to such type of missions. used in Iraq. they shut down ADUs as allies flow by, turned on to engage at distance, but alarms floated, awaited and then took out ADUs. if alarm reached fail safe distance, then took out secondary target. QinetiQ demoed an 84 hour capable UAV, so await until that gets weaponised.
simrobin 3 years ago
"verde" - the biggest problem identified was info overload for pilots and high G force in reactive manouvers. UCAVs wont suffer from the same problem. we been autonomous flying low level (76m) since early 90's, but its always died in defence cuts as too futeristic, but not now. we have a 6 year DTC program looking specifically at autonomous behaviour with taranis flying in 2010, but its already flown in other forms.
simrobin 3 years ago
well unless some comes up with interia damping
high g force is always going to be a problem for manned aviation,
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
"verde" - true, thats why the future of a/c design is about to completely change. as we all know 50% of an a/c is for the pilot, thats why the taranis is the size of a hawk for bombing. imagine what it could do if UCAVs were designed the same size as say the F22, the range and payload with a 20+ G capability. a paper to congress suggested huge savings on future battles, thats if UCAVs perform at least as good as current manned.
simrobin 3 years ago
"verde" - MOD and BAe have got really excited over this, putting alot of funding its way. theres always been a problem low flying of skylining, not any-more if its to be believed. some of the pics which appear in a R&D journal showed an a/c there one minute, gone the next. its visual not radar, so still stealth, it will help with MANPADs in low flying. there are alot of new toys just starting to come through, even a new tactical decision aid to advise pilots, that can also fly the mission.
simrobin 3 years ago
Lucky pilot who can fly with Mig 29 OVT :)
KristupitOo 3 years ago
They wanted to make an aircraft that has speed and ceiling of MiG25 and manuverability and effectiveness of MiG21. later they realised that they cant do it so they left speed and ceiling lower and concentrated on manuverability and combat effectiveness. shape was inspired by MiG25 that is true.
Spetsnazovets 3 years ago
as far as low-freq, it's radar it still has emit it's signal to track and fire , even in wolf pack configuration, 1 site supplying targeting data to the other,s that one site is going to get whacked eventually
IR targeting and electro-optical sighting are point blank measures
and again dealing with a stealth aircraft
it's going to be a quick draw, who sees who first
verdebusterAP 3 years ago
Just to clear a few points MiG-21 was the benchmark for F15 design. MiG-29/Su-27 were benchmarked against F-15, MiG29 is russias F-16 while Su-27 was more agains F-15. USA does spend LOTS on avionics but have found that Russia rarely bothers to instantly create its own version instead asymmetrically responding (ie stealth plane? low-freq long-wave radar. works wonders and sees them well). If someone wantes to discuss aircraft in general without insults message me and we'll chat ;)
Spetsnazovets 3 years ago
your history is alittle off
the F-15 was a respone to the MiG-25 , not the MiG-21
low-freq long wave radar vs stealth
obviously nobody it's worried SAM considering none of the capable countries like China, Inida, Japan, and russia has stopped their respective programs
then the issue of S-400s being able to intercept stealth as well as attacking SEAD aircraft
any air defense can be breached, just a matter of planning and execution
