This is making me want to change from an iphone to an Pre. Hopefully apple and at&t can win me back if they release something new or else it'll be the pre for me
Yes. The Pre sends vendor-specific USB commands to mimic and iPod (when it's connected, iTunes reports "syncing iPod"). However, it is not guaranteed that it will continue to do work. Apple released a note stating that they are aware that some devices sync with iTunes in that manner but they do not test future iTunes releases with non-Apple devices. I'd bet that it will continue to work. Palm will probably release an update whenever an iTunes compatibility is broken. Otherwise try DoubleTwist.
you are just an Apple fanboy and an Ignorant tool. I happen to like the Mac computers, and I own an Ipod as well. I think the Iphone is no more than an Ipod with a phone which is fine... but puh-lease don't try to pass it off as a smart phone. The Pre is a Smart phone.
iphone is a media phone not a smart phone. multi touch functionality was first created by palm. Palm pre is an actual smart phone. apple asked verizon if they wanted the iphone. they turn apple down. palm asked other carriers if they wanted the palm pre. and they got turned down. sprint was the only one who said yes to them.
how is this an I-Phone copy? The only similarity I see is the multi touch functionality. The UI is completely different (better if you ask me). The Iphone platorm only allows one app at a time, the WebOS does multi-tasking like a desktop computer. The I-phone uses a touch keyboard, the Pre... a REAL keyboard. Don't even get me started on the battery situation! The pre will be an Iphone killer. Oh and BTW... PALM invented the PDA phone devices not Apple!
Guys !! chill out. Apple did not invent the idea of using our fingers to touch things.
Unfortunately for apple fingers are what humans use to interact with things that don't recognize speech.
You can't point and say "copy cats". It's an OS that uses touch. Everybody is doing it. Apple just happened to be the first to fully use the idea of a touch UI.
I guess Palm could have made theirs a "knuckles" based UI instead of fingers. But come on. Get real !!!
What I never get is why so many people (mainly Apple fans to be fair) complain about copying? We all know everyone copies everyone (including Apple) and if a product is the market's best then a competitor coming out with similar features shouldn't matter in the slightest. If anything it means we ALL get to have a generally higher level of usability no matter the device we use. I won't buy a Pre but I appreciate it raises the bar of what we will expect which my book is good thing!
@ tiem230 - The app store is what keeps the iPhone a really viable product. Without it though it's just a pretty phone. Apple still only has less than 1% of the world wide cell phone market share.
this was amazing...about a year and a half ago when it was introduced by apple and was called the iphone...seriously people..if ur gonna make an iphone killer...dont blatantly copy iphone os
All these "smartphones" like Xperia, Diamond, Touch HD, Omnia etc. has one big problem in common that is slowly making them more and more useless and if it continues, customers will soon discover other options and make the "smartphones" dissapear.
The problem in common is: Windows Mobile. It is not WM itself that's the problem, the problem is that it's waaay to slow and sluggish and has a not so optimized UI.
Palm has done a really terrific job here from that aspect!
Well the thing about Windows Mobile is that hardware developers are using the bare minimum specs to run WM, and not really doing too much on hardware utilizations. Phones like the iPhone and Pre are working well, because the software was customized around that hardware. If you were to release the software to the masses, they will use the bare mimimum specs on those, and it will be plagued with issues.
There are a LOT of things Palm has always done brilliantly: an intuitive, lag-free interface (the company was keen to get over how instantly the Pre responds compared to the you-know-what-Phone) plus simple but useful ideas like the mute slider and all the stuff today's users take for granted, like interface-wide copy and paste.
Sadly the bundled Palm software always seems second rate and the devices themselves have felt increasingly compromised alongside rivals. Here's hoping the Pre does not!
@0:33 he missed an obvious branding opportunity. He should've said "palmtop" instead of "desktop". But, I know... he was using the familiar metaphor. Still...
Still think Palm's marketing team is STUPID for putting this on Sprint first when Sprint is loosing customers like MAD! Odd how the very first Palm smartphone (true smartphone) the Treo 270/300 debuted as GSM network based models first.
pffft lol i have an iphone myself and you have no idea how much i want this just because its ACTUALLY multi functional lol i dont want to have to quit an app to go to another
You got SOLD on marketing of the iPhone vs other smartphones when the iPhone does NOT work/operate as a smartphone. the iPhone is simply a FEATURE phone. Funny because the precursor of the iPhone, the Apple Newton did do multifunctioning.
how is this a ripoff? do you see a physical qwerty keypad on the iphone? can you copy/paste on an iphone? can you have the alt-tab functionality on the iphone? the answer is no.
You gotta chuckle when he says BOOM at 2:54 hehe. This product and it's makers are clearly inspired and influenced by Apple. I hope more companies do the same.

not even close to the iphone. Nothing is as nearly as good as the iphone yet. The app store with all the video games kills every other phone out.
