@bamasoxtrumpeter93 ... I know. I was just trying to be sarcastic. :) ... I don't attend any more DCI events due to the fact that they are on Bb's. I would rather go see a good marching band than PAY good money to see, and hear, former Drum and Bugle Corps pretend to still be relevant. IMHO. DCI does not get the juices flowing anymore, for me. :)
Oh and please for goodness sakes, put the forte of '83 back into that punctuating ditty. I remember hearing the crown go wild twice for that double ending. If they ever put it on the field again, a good idea would be to add a silent mind-blowing visual effect (8 counts or so) in between, that would really sell the croud on a new approach from a new era corp. A high speed, high energy, kaleidoscopic movement that accentuates the hornlines athleticism as well as its solid grasp on heritage.
I'mo tell you, I like Rocky Point Holiday, and I love the Cadets. But I'm getting tire of hearing it butchered as an overblown exhibitious power tuner. Bet the director loves this piece tremendousely and passes it back year after year. No problem. But if you want to relive that grandure of 1983 bring the soprano down a bit, let the tenors dominate a little more, and most importantly, add the battery precussion. Playing it without them is like watching Freddy the Freeloader without his make-up.
hey now, it's a warmup and they are the peak of the artform. it's still drum corp and playing loud and in tune is kinda what brings the shivers. you can go hear the symphony if you want somethingmore pure. luckily drum corps is still drum corps. (now that the talking is out!)
serriously though.....put a set of good headphones or hook your computer up to a real sound system and you won't believe the sound. It records in stereo and the quality is amazing
Haha dont take it too personally...when you try to record such a loud, pure sound on a microphone the size of a fingernail, you lose tons of low-end and it sounds "thin." Always makes the dirt stand out more. Happens to the best of us :( lol But really....so many times I've come off the field after playing an Open Class show and can barely feel my chops. Not too many corps can pull off what Cadets do.
I love how people are using the audio quality on a cameraphone YouTube video to judge the excellence of a great drum and bugle corps. Why don't you go check out Rocky Point directly in front of their warmup arc at the next show? And this a competely different arrangement from 82! Not to mention it's being played after a full day of rehearsal and an 11-minute show with FAR more visual and musical responsibility than the "G days". Eat it.
I have to agree with the other posters about the g bugles. Having marched many times in shows with the Garfield Cadets, the video above sounds much different and worse than the 83 version.
The early eighties version - ON REAL BUGLES - blows anything played on Bb horns away. Do yourself a favor and dig up a video, or a recording, turn your speakers up and listen to what DCI used to sound like. Only Phantom, Cadets, and the Devils, even come close to the volume of real drum and BUGLE corps.I was at the Atlanta show and another in Virgina, just to give DCI one more shot-I will never go back. You are lucky if you never heard REAL drum and bugle corps. You have no idea what you missed.
You know how they say being in tune makes you louder? Yeah, that's true. Pretty much the only G hornline I ever heard REALLY in tune was Star '93, and they played the horns like Bbs, instead of just blowing their guts out. Bbs are BETTER. Get over it.
Have you ever BEEN to a DCI finals where everyone was on G's? Hey, I grew up in Bb heaven, here in the nations capital. Both my trumpet instructors played for The President''s Own (Terry Detwiler), and The Army Blues (Terry's brother, Dave Detwiler). Tuning is fine and dandy, I get it ... but ... this is supposed to be drum and BUGLE corps, for goodness sakes. "The President's Own" is for a pretty in tune band sound. Otherwise, DCI is turning into summer MBA. Clarinets and piccs are next?
This is nonsense. Corps have not used true bugles for decades. Would you like DCI do disallow valves also? Most corps use trumpets that are configured for outdoor use like sopranos (eg. larger bore). These trumpets are just as much a bugle as the G horns. Bugles weren't even always standardized in G.
People threw a fit when proper mallet percussion was allowed. Old timers are always going to be reluctant to change.
marinebugler . . . drum corps wouldnt exist if they were still trying to push G's every kid in this country that learns and that will eventually march in these corps will learn on Bb horns . . . they did this so that the activity wont die because no one knows how to or is trained to play a G bugle
Oh, I agree ... and the lack of G-bugle manufacturers plays a part in it too. It's all about sponsorships and getting the funding from the makers of 'regular' instruments that is at the heart of the Bb shift. I understand. It's just a shame that my son will never be able to hear a top 10 DCI 'corps' perform on G's.
I just like to complain about things that I have absolutely no control over.
yea it really is a shame . . . i mean im a huge drum corps fan and cadet alum and ill never even get to hear that live . . most kids don't even know that they used to do that. the real shame to me is that amazing musical experiences like this are a dying thing . . .
good for the marine corps, but they have the luxury of time. the level of performance would drop pretty significantly if the first 3 weeks of spring training were spent learning bugles. then the open class wouldnt exist because they dont really have full spring training. then the corps would tank because no one wants to come see a crappy drum corps in june and july.
O and the brass comment, seriously!!! if you only change the pitch of the instruments, not the fingering, it drastically changes the instrument from the players prospective! brass players know what a Bb feels like and how to get it to be in tune and resonant . . . and thats you get good corps!! its not like a woodwind where you just push a button and blow . . .
@titancrazy604 I play both instruments- it's a different approach and feel for the partials, takes me about 5 minutes to adjust my ear and embrochure, but once I feel the horn, I'm fine. It's not as big a deal as some people seem to want to make it out as. Quality instruments are the key, not necessarily the key itself. 8)
so you pretty much figure of all the corps all time that Star'93 was the only one to play in tune? you must have seen a lot of shows. BTW Garfield 85 played in tune, very nicely too thank you very much.

@whitfkl318nu agreed. ron nelson rolls around his studio somewhere in Rhode Island every time these idiots chop this piece up.

I predict that DCI will have woodwinds within the next 10 years. All in the name of 'progress'.
MarineBugler 2 years ago
G's are still technically not even 'bugles' either. The definition of a bugle is a VALVLESS horn. G's have valves.
I do plenty understand the value of tradition though, and I too miss G bugles. Can't do anything about it though, so try enjoy it as it is.
BlueSmokeAndMirrors7 2 years ago
thats not gonna happen. i dont think that drum corps want to spend money for 50 thousand reeds for about 50 marchers for 3 months.

@titancrazy604 ... No. Brass is brass, dude. The fingerings are the same. The pitch is different. ... Bb, C, D, Eb for trumpets.
Your logic does not explain the rich history of DRUM AND BUGLE corps, where kids came to learn HOW TO PLAY THE F***ING horn.
Oh yeah, The Marine Drum and Bugle Corps STILL plays on TWO valve G horns!
