I don't know why Flemish kids have to learn French as a second language in school. They should rather learn English as a second language. It's way more importan than French. And besides it's not like French Walloons want to learn the language of the majority of people in Belgium so why bother learning French when you can be learning English?

@JOSHTRUS The Flemish are trying to set English as second language in Flanders. But there is a difference between Flemish and Walloons , a matter of mind. That's why Flemish learn French but French will not learn dutch.

@Oebale Or perhaps more than a matter of mind, it has to do with the fact french is spoken by about 220 Millions people around the world (including 125 Millions for whom it is their first language), while dutch/flemmish is spoken by 27 Millions people. Just sayin'...

@Liam2048 close, but no. The real problem is the difference in mentality. The Walloons think and reason in a different way. I, being flemish, think this man is disgustingly narrowminded (as is the audience for that matter) in finding pleasure in ridiculing our language. Yes, some of the flemish dialects and lingual forms may seem strange to you, but every Flemish resident has a profound knowledge of french even though french has about a million exceptions, but they never hear US bitch about it!

Very apt; as a Dutch-speaking Belgian I'm ashamed about the Dutch spoken in Flanders. When one speaks standard Dutch one is ridiculed in Flanders - a bit like speakers of standard English (pronunciation) are in England...

We speak Belgian Dutch, and people who seeks to name it otherwise are hopelessly backward IMO.

Austrians also say they speak German. Belgian French also has a wholly different vocabulary then French from France.

Nobody wants to speak Dutch (Holland) that accent is terrible. The hard GGGggg, the way the Dutch says Jaaauww instead of Jou. Dutch from the Netherlands sounds horrible, Flemish sounds so much nicer. So I don't blame people for saying they speak Flemish..

Dutch is not a synonym for Hollandic. And there's not one Dutch accent from the Netherlands. Our language isn't the only language that differs. As good as all languages spoken over different countries have such differences. It's that you know it.

There's always the compromise: Southern Dutch. Brabantian will always do well in that respect.

@captianjoel: stop generalizing. As a foreign student of the Dutch language, Flemish sounds much softer to my ears than Dutch. I do my best to try and pick that accent up (with some rational limits) instead of the Dutch one although the latter has its charms too. I don't live in either of the involved lands, I am not biased. Don't take it personally.

Mmm. Interesting. I'm learning French and Dutch at the moment (am Anglophone) and would be interested to know what the Vlaams speakers think of this. Do you think it's funny or that he's not respecting nederlandse taal enough? I certainly find the two languages different (and love 'em both!)

@recourl Je suis français et je comprends, mais c'est normal (het is normaal!) parce que j'apprends le néerlandais par la méthode Assimil. Il faut effectivement avoir quelques notions de néerlandais pour comprendre.
