I agree! I think it's hard for them. I'm Brazilian/Cuban I'm dark.but People ask me about my ethnicity if they are confused they say' OH, I THOUGHT YOU WERE JUST BLACK". People really act as if there no blacks in Brazil, it's the reason why most of us look they way we do. but they always get the Cuban thing correct. i love people like you! im nigerian and i feel a connection to these people. a lot of them may speak spanish but some of their african culture is very much in these latin american countries. there is a video on youtube about yoruba culture in cuba which is a culture in nigeria. im igbo nigerian not yoruba nigerian but i still feel a connection.
