I got the Vox yesterday its going back on tuesday after the NewYear, its ok but I didn't test it just got it online and there is not much scope on it.
Tried the Vibro a few weeks ago, that is much better and I'm gonna exchange the Vox for the Fender
I had a new Super Champ XD... hated it. I play Gibsons and it failed miserably compared to my older Champ (70's). I'm getting the Vox AC4TV Mini in three days..can't wait to use it at next rehearsal. - Get a good all tube amp and use your money for a pedal if you must. The new digital Champs (XD) are cheap and sound that way, too. Disclosure: I own 9 Fender pro-level tube amps and gig steady with them for over 26 years.
You did a very nice job on this shoot out. I found the AC4 sound so chimey and pleasing that it helped me decide between these two. The AC4 is more expensive than the Super Champ these days, which was unexpected. I think the AC4 is gaining ground as the leading low watt, low cost all tube amp.
Fender makes great amps. However, for the money, you can't beat the AC4. Great class A tube amp. I like mine more then my blues junior. And for $150, it's a deal!
Not sure what the dislikes are for. I actually appreciate people putting demos up... I have both of these amps and they are both good. Keep them both.
This amp with an extension cab is VERY loud. I have a custom built 2x12 and it will run you out of the room. I tried it on a 4x12 and it gets a sounds a little funny. Sorta like there ain't enough to push the speakers like I want. But to answer your question.... yes I play this amp with a hard hitting drummer and do just fine.
I wish there was a ac10 :( unless, does anyone think that an ac4tv can keep up with an unmic'd crazy drummer smashing the symbals as hard as he could,
@FullSolo AC-15 head and a 1x10 cab. Or an AC4 with a good 10" should be more than enough with a band. Just tell the drummer not to smash the cymbals as hard as he can :p
@novanine9 whatever mate, ive played tele's, strats, les pauls you name it through the AC30 and have never had any problems, and i could also name a ton of guitarists that use an AC30 and not rickenbacker that make it sound awesome. get your head of of your ass.
@novanine9 my god what is your problem, im simply stating that you can get decent sounds through a class A amplifier with any guitar, its about how you balance amp settings and guitar phrasing and dynamics. i use both a les paul and a tele w/ p90's through my class A amplifier, and have found both to be suited to my tastes, and both get a very nice and wide range of very useable sounds. there is no need for insults and excessive use of caps lock...
@aektzis91 - Read my original posting again. I said that Ricky's have a magical sound through Voxi because of their wide freq range. I have Vox, Fenders, and Marshalls (Studio owner). Strats WERE designed by Leo to sell his amps - FACT. Though they sound great...they were cheaply made compared to their contemporaries, like your LP. It was NOT until Hendrix that strats became so expensive. YOU CAN GET A GOOD SOUND OUT OF AN COMBO IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING....pairings R only guidelines.
Wow, can't believe I saw this comparison tonight. Just left Sam ash in Tampa with the Champ in my trunk , now listening to this I feel even better bout my selection. I tried a Vox, think it was the same model but loved the tones and clean sound of the Fender!
I ran across this video over a year after you made it. Both amps sound good, and nice playing! I am just curious what amp did you keep? Do you still have it or something different by now?
I happen to own both a Super Champ XD and a Vox AC15C1. Now that Super Champ is one super amp and it smokes that AC4 in pretty much every way. IMO the Super Champ is one of the best amps Fender makes. Much better than the loud but limited Hot Rod Deluxe and Deville series.
Next to my AC15 however, the Super Champ gets put in it's place. :)
This might have been a very interesting comparison. I own one of these amps, and I've been looking at the other, and it was good that you kept your guitar work consistant. What was not so great was that it was very difficult to tell which amp you were playing when, and that must have been the case when your buddies were watching too. Would have been great if you had said, "That was the SCXD, and this is the Vox." .. Truth? You wasted a lot of people's time.
"Vox amps just destroy Fender amps in general. " ...brilliant. I used to prefer the sound of fender amps, but now that you put it that way, it looks like I am wrong. I have never thought about it like that before.
I would choose the sound from 3:00 in this song and sound setting. The tone is richer. But, If it is really the sound of Fender Super Champ, it's no wonder I like it, because Fender Champ is 15w tube amp right? and Vox AC4 is 4w tube amp.
I think the amount of watt decides the thickness of tone and it depends on the preference but, tube amp sound richer than transistor amp.
i have both of these amps. i would say that for the most part, with single coils, the super champ stays pretty clean and bright no matter what the volume whereas the ac4 breaks up and is very thick and warm, especially at the 4 watt cranked levels. for home usage i typically go for the ac4 at 1watt settings. believe it or not, its plenty loud
I'd like to ask: how do you get the tones from 2:01 through 2:50: I hear a rhythm part and a lead part; what pickup settings are used for the rhythm and the lead? And what effect(s) and brands did you use for the lead and for the rhythm? Also, how did you get the rhythm simultaneous with the lead (via a looper or delay?). The combination sounds really nice. I'm thinking of getting the Vox - I love chime and EL84s.
I had the vibrochamp and I hated the all of the models past #8. Basically all of the high gain ones were terrible sounding. I dont know if the super does this but every vibro I played through had this annoying compressor/limiter type thing going on where it would make a clicking type noise. It was so annoying that I got rid of it. I could hear a little of that compression when you started playing the super.
Will the AC4 produce enough volume to cut through the mix in a rehearsal situation? Obviously it would need to be mic'd for gigs but so would the fender unless very small venue?
In all honesty, I am looking at both these amps, aswell as the Marshall Class 5 to find me a nice practice amp. KEEP BOTH...although you've already made your decision. Both have great pro's and con's, and it is really to hard to pick just one...under 500 for 2 quality amps, no brainer...cheers
Just to add i know some folk will say this a great recording amp but come on how many people will record with this, It is just a home amp that does not work because there is no master volume so it is just to loud believe me!
I have owned both of these amps and now i only have the Fender it is much more fun to play. I am fed up up with this all tube crap is great , the vox is just plain harsh were as the Fender can be tweaked to get a good range of sounds my vote goes to the Fender because i still have it and i am not bored of it.
I really like the wide variety of tones I can get from the Super Champ XD. While the AC4 is full tube saturation, I found it rather boring to practice with. Like another said, it's whether someone wants a Fender tone, or Vox tone.
wel alot of us are looking at the amps on youtube so we can see how satisfied the customers are and make sure there are no issues with the amps. No one in their right mind would ever buy an amp without playing it first at a music store
@hastybeford: I agree. This video was originally posted for some online buddies to give input. I never intended strangers to make my decision for me :)
2) Yes, but again YMMV and you need a pedal for most diverse flavors, but if you are an original artist rather than trying to replicate a specific HM tone in your head, then this amp rules.
3) YMMV, probably not without a mic. This amp is for 1) studio 2) small venue 3) players who don't mind using a PA from the venue or using your own, so that you can use any amp you want for tone, and then use the PA for getting your sound distributed. Depending on budget of course...
It's a matter of taste. I think if you like certain genres that are almost universally recorded with Fender and Fender style circuits, then you like the tone. I do not like Fender clean tone at all. At best, I can tolerate it. I can also appreciate the difference between something that sounds fine, but is not to my tastes vs something that sounds horrible. Small Fender amps have horrible clean tone, except for rare cases, and then the amp seems to have a single "sweet spot" before it gets harsh
as a side, i have now gotten my pedalboard and am using the ac4 with phaser 808 reverb and echo.
at this point i have the ts808 on all the time and using it pretty much as the amp.
the ac4 is loud and if you have intolerant neighbors (grrr) they will come and complain like bitches when you crank it up in the morning, which you have to do since the volume knob is your dist.
with a good OD pedal (ts808 +1)you can just put up the volume knob to a fifth (1/4w) and still enjoy the cream
Anyone know if there is a big difference between the 8" and the 10" speaker regarding the sound? Is it worth it to upgrade to the 10"? I got the 8 by mistake...
The 10" sounds fuller and has much more punch. The 8" does not sound bad though, it sounds great for an 8". I went to my local GC today and was able to talk to the salesman to sell me the 10" model for same price as the 8" model of $199 out the door. These AC4TV amps, 8 and 10" models are great, perhaps instant classics.
i always wanted also both of these.. now i have the super champ xd and am not completely satisfied even after changing the speaker to jensen p10r and trying many tubes, preamp and power tubes.. preamp i settled for tung sol, and i want to try el84 in the power amp section using an adapter.. tonebone from tube amp doctor or yellow sockets from thd for example.. people say it really helps getting a rounder warmer sound and smoother distortion ala vox...
I've played both, and I can't tell if its just the camera, but the Vox actually sounds really brittle and harsh, even with a neck humbucker. Adjusting the tone knob does little to help this.
The Champ has decent effects and reverb, and is three times the wattage for 50 bucks more. And doesn't require an overdrive pedal. If you really want "just tubes"; get the Vox, but try it first. I was going to buy it, wasn't even considering the XD, but after trying both amps, there is no comparison.
but the vox is a much better starting point, if you want to build a pedalboard.
There's so many ready made amps, I got a vt15 before my ac4 and i just had to accept thye can't make combos as good as the real thing. every amp does something good. I tested teh VT vs a real ac amp, and it sounded just like it except not as full in tone. Fully acceptable i thought for crunch play. the more dist you add the less difference you spot.
I disagree with the "much better staring point for a pedal board." The super champ's channel 1 is all tube as well, no modeling (although it is routed through the DSP), just not as hot biased as the Vox. So it takes pedals the same way the Vox does; as a relatively clean tube amp. It sounds like you haven't tried the XD; you may be surprised like I was.
i have tried teh super champ at a guitar center and
they have that nice clean sound...but
i'd like to like it but it sounds hollow to me. vox has that warm, as you said; "hot biased" tone. It's subtle, but i was at first going to buy a super champ for the good word i heard about it but for me it didn't quite get there. Then again i dont play strats and i noticed it did considerably better with its own brand of guitars than other models
Okay we disagree :) I don't want to start a war. I just like the versatility and extra power over the Vox's purer tone. It was just a little too chimey and trebly for my taste I guess. I prefer a Tweed/ Marshallesque sound.
but the war is already begun, and the risk is the soul of our sound.
sometime when i can bother and if theres a demand i could post a vid of how i use my vox and board, mostly out of interest. don't think there's any vids up with amp // pedal testing for this
I use a Fender Vibrolux and an Vox AC30. Its like comparing apples and oranges. Fender is absolutely amazing at what it does and so is Vox although both of their low end models are extremely poor (namely the Fender Frontman and the Vox AVT series). I do have a slight preference to Fender though, but every man to his own.
That's not true at all though...with a good enough amp mic (even an SM57 would do the trick) the little Vox would sound great. The size of the amp matters not. It's the PA's ability to effectively represent the amp's tone that means everything.
The Vox MAY sound slightly better, BUT (and this is a HUGE but) you'll lose all of those other sounds and effects if you ditch the Super Champ XD. Sorry, but no one could convince me to do that because of an AC4....no friggen way. You'd have to lay a $1000+ amp in front of me to even begin to consider it.
Thanks for all the comments. I realize these are not really the same things...but I was looking for a low watt amp that takes pedals well to use for church. Both are (were) in the same price range. So that's why I compared them. I ended up returning both and went with a Vox Night Train. I wish I would have kept the SCXD as they raised the price quite a bit.
Let me preface this by saying I own a Super Champ XD, but I liked the SCxd better. I'm pretty blown away by that little amp - the clean channel cranked or channel two on setting 2 & 8 is just fantastic. I've owned the AC15TV mahogany cabinet and ended up selling it...It's a great one trick pony, but just sags - doesn't have a great response...
the superchamp ist a damn modelling amp with tubes...so kick its ass!!

oysterlicker 2 years ago 3
sorry you're right! i thought it was a vibro-champ which is 5watt..its point less to compare a 15watter with a 4watter!

Tube Vs Transistor, not the same
falzhobel 1 year ago
the fender has a tube in it also. i think some of the model is transistor however.
eblue33 1 year ago
@eblue33 the fender has one 12ax7 and 2 6v6's... the little brother to the superchamp ( the 5 watt vibro champ) has the 12ax7 and only ONE 6v6
matty2time 1 year ago
I had the vibrochamp and I hated the all of the models past #8. Basically all of the high gain ones were terrible sounding. I dont know if the super does this but every vibro I played through had this annoying compressor/limiter type thing going on where it would make a clicking type noise. It was so annoying that I got rid of it. I could hear a little of that compression when you started playing the super.
scorpguitar79 2 years ago
hi, what were your settings on the super champ in this vid? i have one and i would like to try and replicate what you did
ColdGreenChili 2 years ago
im not too sure, but the vox sounds better for leads, and the fender sounds better for clean chords..
richipuu 2 years ago
Will the AC4 produce enough volume to cut through the mix in a rehearsal situation? Obviously it would need to be mic'd for gigs but so would the fender unless very small venue?
giddygiraffe 2 years ago
In all honesty, I am looking at both these amps, aswell as the Marshall Class 5 to find me a nice practice amp. KEEP BOTH...although you've already made your decision. Both have great pro's and con's, and it is really to hard to pick just one...under 500 for 2 quality amps, no brainer...cheers
TeleBandit 2 years ago
Don't hate me, but the Fender sounded better for the arppegiated chords and the Vox sounded better for the melody lines.
SirQ4 2 years ago 16
After listening to this months later; I actually agree with your assessment.
elevatedpraise 2 years ago
Just to add i know some folk will say this a great recording amp but come on how many people will record with this, It is just a home amp that does not work because there is no master volume so it is just to loud believe me!
fhsdundee 2 years ago
To add sorry if this is a bit to late but i forgot to mention yor playing is superb!!
fhsdundee 2 years ago
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
elevatedpraise 2 years ago
I have owned both of these amps and now i only have the Fender it is much more fun to play. I am fed up up with this all tube crap is great , the vox is just plain harsh were as the Fender can be tweaked to get a good range of sounds my vote goes to the Fender because i still have it and i am not bored of it.
fhsdundee 2 years ago
I really like the wide variety of tones I can get from the Super Champ XD. While the AC4 is full tube saturation, I found it rather boring to practice with. Like another said, it's whether someone wants a Fender tone, or Vox tone.
pbrocker56 2 years ago
The Vox sounds awesome.
ryan06105 2 years ago 2
pfft, VOX rules!
abstenia07 2 years ago 2
What song did you play? I really like it.
I have to choose between this two for christmas
edgarenst 2 years ago
Keep the vox.
IMO the effects and amp models make the fender sound almost fake.
The vox is just simple-all tube amp. It's all you need if you buy some good stompboxes.
Ilovemyfender2 2 years ago 2
The Fender is more distinctive, fimiliar. The Vox is class A more brittish if thats your thing.
EuphorbusBTB 2 years ago
i don't think the vox can do any distortion the fender can this video does'nt show that
keep the fender

vox ac 4!!!
way much better than fender

also os there shimmer in the background at 1:51 what pedal are u usin for that?
u2withorwithoutyou 2 years ago
He is using a Line 6 M13.
You could just get that out of any quality digital delay pedal though. Check out a Line 6 DL4
Ilovemyfender2 2 years ago
The Vox hands down sounds amazing
u2withorwithoutyou 2 years ago
I made a similar video, but mine was comparing two vox amps, Vox VT30 and the AC4TV. Check it out.

Do you really think having complete strangers listening to lo-fi Youtube clips is the best way to make a decision?
hastyberford 2 years ago
wel alot of us are looking at the amps on youtube so we can see how satisfied the customers are and make sure there are no issues with the amps. No one in their right mind would ever buy an amp without playing it first at a music store
easypsphacking 2 years ago 4
@hastybeford: I agree. This video was originally posted for some online buddies to give input. I never intended strangers to make my decision for me :)
elevatedpraise 2 years ago
Why is this even a question? The ac4 sounds WAY better than the fender.
acvieluf 2 years ago 4
Hey All,
I am planning to get this AMP. However i have 3 questions about it.
1 Can this amp sound clean at higher volumes?
2 Will this amp handle Heavy Metal Distortion too?
3 Is this amp loud for 4 Watts? If yes can i do a gig with it in say a 3000 square foot Auditorium?
aryasridhar 2 years ago
1) YMMV, probably not
2) Yes, but again YMMV and you need a pedal for most diverse flavors, but if you are an original artist rather than trying to replicate a specific HM tone in your head, then this amp rules.
3) YMMV, probably not without a mic. This amp is for 1) studio 2) small venue 3) players who don't mind using a PA from the venue or using your own, so that you can use any amp you want for tone, and then use the PA for getting your sound distributed. Depending on budget of course...
chris2002Rocklin 2 years ago
no, HELL NO, and no
aektzis91 2 years ago
I was able to figure the same place in songs on both amps like 2:00 and 4:00 and I think the Fender has a better tone
CASD57 2 years ago
It's a matter of taste. I think if you like certain genres that are almost universally recorded with Fender and Fender style circuits, then you like the tone. I do not like Fender clean tone at all. At best, I can tolerate it. I can also appreciate the difference between something that sounds fine, but is not to my tastes vs something that sounds horrible. Small Fender amps have horrible clean tone, except for rare cases, and then the amp seems to have a single "sweet spot" before it gets harsh
chris2002Rocklin 2 years ago
as a side, i have now gotten my pedalboard and am using the ac4 with phaser 808 reverb and echo.
at this point i have the ts808 on all the time and using it pretty much as the amp.
the ac4 is loud and if you have intolerant neighbors (grrr) they will come and complain like bitches when you crank it up in the morning, which you have to do since the volume knob is your dist.
with a good OD pedal (ts808 +1)you can just put up the volume knob to a fifth (1/4w) and still enjoy the cream
ohwell121 2 years ago
I say keep the AC4 TV. Sweet VOX tone...
xr650r01 2 years ago 4
Keep the VOX!
Anyone know if there is a big difference between the 8" and the 10" speaker regarding the sound? Is it worth it to upgrade to the 10"? I got the 8 by mistake...
alexnasralla 2 years ago
The 10" sounds fuller and has much more punch. The 8" does not sound bad though, it sounds great for an 8". I went to my local GC today and was able to talk to the salesman to sell me the 10" model for same price as the 8" model of $199 out the door. These AC4TV amps, 8 and 10" models are great, perhaps instant classics.
gmlasam 2 years ago
you know what i will do?
i always wanted also both of these.. now i have the super champ xd and am not completely satisfied even after changing the speaker to jensen p10r and trying many tubes, preamp and power tubes.. preamp i settled for tung sol, and i want to try el84 in the power amp section using an adapter.. tonebone from tube amp doctor or yellow sockets from thd for example.. people say it really helps getting a rounder warmer sound and smoother distortion ala vox...
GeekG 2 years ago
I've played both, and I can't tell if its just the camera, but the Vox actually sounds really brittle and harsh, even with a neck humbucker. Adjusting the tone knob does little to help this.
The Champ has decent effects and reverb, and is three times the wattage for 50 bucks more. And doesn't require an overdrive pedal. If you really want "just tubes"; get the Vox, but try it first. I was going to buy it, wasn't even considering the XD, but after trying both amps, there is no comparison.
ubustang 2 years ago
but the vox is a much better starting point, if you want to build a pedalboard.
There's so many ready made amps, I got a vt15 before my ac4 and i just had to accept thye can't make combos as good as the real thing. every amp does something good. I tested teh VT vs a real ac amp, and it sounded just like it except not as full in tone. Fully acceptable i thought for crunch play. the more dist you add the less difference you spot.
ohwell121 2 years ago
I disagree with the "much better staring point for a pedal board." The super champ's channel 1 is all tube as well, no modeling (although it is routed through the DSP), just not as hot biased as the Vox. So it takes pedals the same way the Vox does; as a relatively clean tube amp. It sounds like you haven't tried the XD; you may be surprised like I was.
ubustang 2 years ago
no shit i didnt know that.
i have tried teh super champ at a guitar center and
they have that nice clean sound...but
i'd like to like it but it sounds hollow to me. vox has that warm, as you said; "hot biased" tone. It's subtle, but i was at first going to buy a super champ for the good word i heard about it but for me it didn't quite get there. Then again i dont play strats and i noticed it did considerably better with its own brand of guitars than other models
ohwell121 2 years ago
Okay we disagree :) I don't want to start a war. I just like the versatility and extra power over the Vox's purer tone. It was just a little too chimey and trebly for my taste I guess. I prefer a Tweed/ Marshallesque sound.
ubustang 2 years ago
but the war is already begun, and the risk is the soul of our sound.
sometime when i can bother and if theres a demand i could post a vid of how i use my vox and board, mostly out of interest. don't think there's any vids up with amp // pedal testing for this
=)
ohwell121 2 years ago
a lot of people, most notably Keith Richards, say that Fender amps sound best with Fender guitars.
The Vox Virage sounds amazing with the Ac4. I'm betting a Les Paul would as well.
IrishAmericanPride 2 years ago
makes sense, i've thought that too
fender for fender, they make it working best
while the warm ac4 softens the les paul
ohwell121 2 years ago
what are the settings you use on the AC4 in this video?
ottotheherring 2 years ago
hey i have a Marshall Mg50dfx and a fender FM212DSP 100 watt amp. both are great amps but i wanna buy a fender tube. so which one should i sell.
duffbart 2 years ago
The Vox really does sound much better.
Jeremo18 2 years ago
I'd say that the Fender is more versatile while the vox has a better sound

keep the vox! first of all it looks so much cooolerr!!
second of all it sounds sooooo much better
bouncychu 2 years ago
ac4 ALL THE WAY!! I played these two amps at GC and don't see why anyone in their right mind would pick the super champ
bpisan 2 years ago
Dude I use a VOX AC30 in church. It sounds sooooooo much better than the fender for church type music. Use the VOX
erosar10 2 years ago
It really depends on taste to, some loves the fender sound and sounds great when playing in church..
sweworship 2 years ago
I use a Fender Vibrolux and an Vox AC30. Its like comparing apples and oranges. Fender is absolutely amazing at what it does and so is Vox although both of their low end models are extremely poor (namely the Fender Frontman and the Vox AVT series). I do have a slight preference to Fender though, but every man to his own.
troykeenanguitar 2 years ago
Which amp do you guys recomend, The Vox AC4TV, Orange crush 30, or the Fender frontman 212?
urmothasawhore123 2 years ago
I'm going to sell my big Laney VC50, a 50w valve amp and buy that little awesome AC head and cab, it just sound amazing!
sweworship 2 years ago
I have an Orange Crush 30 and even though it's not a tube amp, it has amazing cleans and very warm tone. takes pedals pretty well!
immatting 2 years ago
for home practice the vox is way better
for gigs...... none of those is really useable for gigs,
jochemaikido 2 years ago
That's not true at all though...with a good enough amp mic (even an SM57 would do the trick) the little Vox would sound great. The size of the amp matters not. It's the PA's ability to effectively represent the amp's tone that means everything.
samjammusic 2 years ago
I would totally take the AC4TV and mic it just for the lolz
Zaspor 2 years ago
The Vox MAY sound slightly better, BUT (and this is a HUGE but) you'll lose all of those other sounds and effects if you ditch the Super Champ XD. Sorry, but no one could convince me to do that because of an AC4....no friggen way. You'd have to lay a $1000+ amp in front of me to even begin to consider it.
KnockYouOutCold 2 years ago
Thanks for all the comments. I realize these are not really the same things...but I was looking for a low watt amp that takes pedals well to use for church. Both are (were) in the same price range. So that's why I compared them. I ended up returning both and went with a Vox Night Train. I wish I would have kept the SCXD as they raised the price quite a bit.
elevatedpraise 2 years ago
hope you put the night train up for a demo, you do a good job. i was wondering about the ac4 head and cab, i need a low watt amp,
thelastnic 2 years ago
you should do some more demos, this is one of best demos for this amp, love about 2:00, that just dang groovy
thelastnic 2 years ago
Let me preface this by saying I own a Super Champ XD, but I liked the SCxd better. I'm pretty blown away by that little amp - the clean channel cranked or channel two on setting 2 & 8 is just fantastic. I've owned the AC15TV mahogany cabinet and ended up selling it...It's a great one trick pony, but just sags - doesn't have a great response...
Johnkenn22 2 years ago
really not the same type of amp to compare.
For the money both good deals, depends on which one you like. I already know the one I prefer and my purchase before the end of the year......
thelastnic 2 years ago
do want to to thank person for taking time out to demo these amps though, gives people chance to at least hear a good demo without alot of talking .
thelastnic 2 years ago
which one is it?
ohwell121 2 years ago
Vox has really better sound, but fender has more power, and if you can, just keep them both....:-)
