The Irish war of Independence was fought from 1919-1921. WW1 was 1914-1918 so don't be confused. "If we lose Ireland we have lost the Empire". India was greatly inspired by Ireland's struggle for Independence. The Brits handed India over to pacifists probably remembering the hammering they got in Ireland.

After the executions of the 1916 leaders support grew. the 1916 prisoners were given a heros welcome when they were freed. Sinn fein stood in the 1918 election on the basis of setting up a republic.
