If you have ever skied without poles you would know its not easy to move straight forward with your arms hanging at your side like an ape. I can see why surfers think its a bad idea. He basically just took away the last 50 years of style by going out there and two plankin' a wave! I wouldn't be caught doing that haha. A surfer's opinion on the poles: I think the poles he uses kind of like a rudder. Surfboards have fins and skiis have nothing, so he drags then in the water to help him turn and also slow him down so he does not get into the wrong part of the wave. You can see him drag them as he turns

@808ride808 I've been skiing since I was 2. Racing at a competitive level for 15 years. Look like freeskiing to me. If this has no grace compared to regular skiing then surfing has no grace compared to snowboarding. It's a gnarly water sport thats bumpy and gritty. This guy is an innovator.

Lol this is like the reverse thing of the whole "snowboard trying to get acknowledged as a real sport". Here it's the skiiers "fighitng for their rights" vs the already well known sport Surfing (which in some ways are a little simelar to snowboard).

Looks to be in its technical infancy. Sure looks like it would benefit from a positive link similar to a ski boot (if using two skis). Note that a slalom water skiers only uses one ski.
