Very expressive playing, and nice passage work...but I felt it was a bit rubato-heavy. Irked me a bit when it interrupted the flow during the middle section and coda :\
Don't let negative comments discourage you. I like your spin on this song. I have heard many play it too quickly, but I think you are very talented, and I enjoyed listening!
Crawfish has a point though; nothing is more annoying than technically-gifted showoffs burning rubber through Chopin pieces that are meant to be played with emotion and restraint (see: all nocturnes, most polonaises, and even several etudes). So I do commend you for keeping things reeled in when you're obvious *able* to up the tempo, ala 3:04.
Lola. Wow, I love you so much. Now go and listen to Pogorelich more. He is so much more patient than you. Look him up if you can. I bet he would like to help you because you are so talented. Increase your dynamics. I love you.
Lola, again, fantastic! The Fantasie has long been one of my favourites. What makes yours brillieant are those deliberate momentary pauses, and the well-time slowing to reflect your core connection with the piece. BRILLIANT!
Well done! Like most people who discover you, I am in awe.
Why are you so talented and beautiful? *sighs* hahaha. You make me want to jump back on my piano (even though i've been playing all day lol) I really love how much passion you put in your music every time you play and your pieces emulate emotion

Sicilianmandolin- Yes; how dare she show emotion with the music that she is playing and how dare she move her arms... that bitch! REALLY?! have you listened to the music? cause its pretty spot on. So what if she moves her arms and leans a bit? if you sit there stiff as a board then you look like a tight ass

Played like a true pianist of the Russian school, complete with infidelity to the score and unnecessarily showy and pseudo-artistic gestures abound. Try making the music more about the music and less about you.
the best version of this pieces I've ever heard!! Every pianist is just rushing trough this piece and they forget that this is a """Fantasie""" Impromptu!!
We are not worthy. That was deeply felt Chopin. What a way to handle this delicate yet powerful melodies. What a exquisite rubato timing. Lady I tip my hat to you. I think they all sound amazing...And I believe I can tell a difference in styles...I'm not sure how foolish this is, but I wonder how Chopin played it...
Thats not foolish at all. Yes the "ideal" way to perform a piece in the end is to perform how the composer would have liked it. Or at least that is one way to look. However no two people will every play the same piece the same way. This is one of the great things about music. Yet again don't get me long I think lola is a very experienced musician. There just some very picky things that I don't like about this recording and someone else may very well love. Unfortunately there isn't a 100% sure

way to play chopin. The little things that i didn't like where the ends of some of her phrases could have been a little smoother during the A section however the rest of it is simply superb.
slicer317, you bring up some very nice points, and you seem to be the only person agreeing with me that this performance is far from ideal. another comment i'd like to make is regarding Lola's sound and her legato, or rather lack thereof. her sound is nice, but in no way extraordinary. basically any well-trained pianist can get that sort of sound from a good steinway. now the fast parts, at least for me, should be very legato, but also have a shimmering effect. Lola somehow misses this.
Belamus, I come to enjoy the music in the evening and I see your malicious nonsense spread on each of her videos. If you dislike it so much WHY do you keep coming back daily? Will you get a life already? Or you are so overcome with jealousy that your piffle cannot be contained?

GreyAlexander913, you're absolutely right. there's absolutely no need for me to comment on Lola's performances since her fans seem to consist only of people like you, who, rather than having a civilized debate about the merits of the performance, simply launch into personal attacks if they happen to disagree with a comment. in any case, if you're here to enjoy the music, why even bother reading the comments? good music almost always speaks for itself.
Belamus, "civilized debate"? What you do is "dress" slander in semi-musical terms. Which may impress a novice listener, but I am too old for this. Ironically, you chose to attack the strongest elements of her performance, which means that you are either utterly clueless or that your goal is to slander. Either way not much to "debate".
Grey, it seems that we can't find common ground about the merits of this performance, so there's no use arguing. but please do explain two things to me:
1) why do you have such a deep commitment to insulting anyone who criticizes Lola in any way?
2) what does your age have to do with your musical understanding? in my experience, age doesn't necessarily make you wiser as far as music is concerned, but does move you closer to senility.
Correct or not...if Chopin would have cared for it or not...I'm rather new to classical music, and I'd guess my ears are not as learned as some, but that is one of the most amazing and beautiful things I have ever heard; and I now love Chopin more than ever. I'm going to listen to others play it aswell. So at least one good thing came of an arguement...I think that I may now know of a few other pianists to hear play this wonderful song. Thanks.
finally, marialn08, i don't see how you can possibly judge someone's taste or talent based on a few youtube comments. i happen to be in the minority here who are not thrilled about the performance, or indeed Lola in general. how you can judge my understanding of piano performance based on that is a bit of a mystery. you probably like a lot of mannered rubato in chopin. in which case, you might even say that richter's playing of chopin is cold and emotionless. now that would be very bad taste.
I think he likes her because she's cute. I agree this isn't the best performance of chopin. The majority of people on here that say wow and what not don't know much about the stylistic choices that go on during a piece like this. Yes she gets through it, however that does not mean that she plays it correctly. (which she doesn't during this performance at least not the entire time)
Well whats "correct" in your head may not be correct in reality... What screams the lack of expertise on your part is the very choice of the word correct. Once you reach a certain professional level (where Lola is without a doubt) there is no correct way of playing Chopin. He himself was vehemently against his students copying him. If you were a bit more musically savvy youd simply say its your opinion, and not state it with such resolve, which only makes you sound oh so incorrect.
I spent years with music, and still havent found the answer to the question how to play Chopin correctly. (Perhaps you met him and he played for you, oh sorry it says you are only 21) So perhaps you can tell us all which performance is CORRECT Horowitzs or Rubensteins or maybe Cziffras and why? Oh MyI am always curious why talk about something you have no idea about? I guess youth
You are so cute judging musical knowledge based on age. If that is the type of "intellectual debate" this is going to be then I won't be a part of this. You are a waste of my time. If you truly want to know my history I am already working on my graduate performance degree. I personal rather discuss the ups and downs of why or why she is not playing chopin correctly rather then saying ahaha your 21 why should anyone listen to you. I love people who base their opinions in ignorance.
My opinion was based on your comment. What gave away your young age however was it's content. I thought you were younger than 21 actually.
There can be no intellectual debate with you as of now. Yes, I am afraid I am a waste of your time, so use it wisely in school. And before talking, ALWAYS do your homework, or you might just sound like a person whose opinions are based on ignorance...
and besides, i don't really see what you mean when you say that others show hours of practice in their playing, whereas Lola's playing is effortless. in terms of technique, Lola is hardly exceptional among world class artists. it's just that some people think about their playing and others don't. i don't see anything wrong with thinking. and in any case, this performance hardly sounds spontaneous, as argerich's best performances do. if anything, the rubato is too mannered for my taste.
listening to this performance makes me see ms. astanova as the pianistic counterpart of anna netrebko. both are beautiful young ladies who are exceptional performers. but, at the end of the day, their performances don't amount to much from an artistic point of view. of course, others will label me as a snob and a fool for writing this, but for some really splendid playing people should check out igoshina or lisitsa. those two are true artists who will achieve great things.
You flatter yorself when you say that people will think of you as fool for the comment you made. It ts mush more appropriate to call you an absolute idiot.
You see, Cetucka, when I wrote my comment I anticipated infantile responses such as yours. And, by the way, it is extremely foolish to call someone an idiot when you yourself have two spelling errors in your comment. But leaving this aside, all I'm saying in my comment is that there are far more talented artists performing today, and Lola, though extremely accomplished, falls short by quite a lot in comparison. Listen carefully, and you'll see my point.
Belamus, allow me to explain why you were called an idiot: I have listened to nearly every version of this piece (& play it myself) and can tell you that other versions by far more talented pianists pale in comparison. Here is why: 1 Nobody has such uniquely singing tone as Lola. 2 Her rubato is most convincing and congruent. 3 Her phrasing and balance are superb. Then there are things that you cant appreciate such as making music vs. executing music.
People that you mention show hours of practice behind the piece, which is a BAD thing. When a person makes it look effortless, thats superb artistry. Not that youd know the difference. Some people have talent, others have taste, judging by your comments you possess neither.
well, thank you for giving reasons for your opinion of Lola's performance. but keep in mind that it remains just that --- an OPINION. it seems that your musical training, if indeed you have any, has gone to your head, and you seem to think that your opinion is fact. wake up! this is not the Soviet Union and you are not Vladimir Ilyich. i too have listened to many interpretations of this piece and have played it myself. and, despite what you say, this performance is not convincing for me.
I applaud this.... i consider myself a good pianist but it would take me at least 2 more years of practice before I would be able to grasp this piece. Amazing.
this piece, its like so inticate and complex and she plays it as if she was easily playing happy birthday with one finger keys. she's not even tensing up or anything, i admire that!
Wow! thanx Lola... you just inspired an amazing idea for a auditorium I will build. And when I open it I will invite you to perform there for the grand opening. Its a full moon and the Extra Loud sounds of all the bugs in the background outside my window create a symphony backing your playing. This auditorium will be outside and will create this effect. Beautiful!!!
You know, I don't intend any callousness at all, but Lola's approach to this performance was very sexy! She starts out normal enough, then she becomes subtlely enraptured by the passion of the intimacy of The Impromptu's intricacies. ...And that very slight nod she does at the end before delivering the resolution is like "giving consent"... if you know what I mean!
it wud take me at least a good 6 month, everyday practive 2 be able 2 play one song like that. moving as fast as ur hands do, and the perfection of the song. its absolutely stunning. i enjoyed it immensely!!!!! xD
I actually clicked on this video by mistake, but I'm i watched it. where to start... absolutely beautiful rubato, interpretation, technique... I love you played so emotionally, without the exaggerated display of emotion. Ive listened so many renditions of piece, but this one, hands down is theeee best! I'm so glad I was able to watch it. Thank you for playing so beautifully. you are definitely a virtuoso.
i am just.. so amazed at how your able to play like that its like there arnt even words.. i love all of your videos, as a classical music lover i must say you are one of the best people i have ever heard play (:
Wow! After it was over, I could not move. Words cannot describe the beauty! I can say, that I love the look of emotion that you have when you are playing.
I am seriously amazed. I checked closely for any mistakes and I didn't hear any. To be able to play a piano this well is definitely a gift that looks like you are using well. Congratulations on ataining this skill. Five well deserved stars.
Some people are just wired to play keyboards. This piece is usually the final for classical students to graduate and she made it look so easy. About the only thing that could give her a challenge is if she wanted to play Hammond B3 Jazz because then she'd have to play bass lines with her feet like Barbara.Dennerlein.
after hearing your performance of the rachmaninov 2nd sonata first movement, I have regained confidence that you can play musically. This is a wonderful performance, full of charisma, singing voices, forward movement and very well prepared dynamics. I think what makes this a musical performance compared to the "rach" is you arnt bouncing about too much, you are sat more still, and more relaxed. This shows in your sound... Wicked thanks :)
geeez, you never have any sense of hesitation, you must be a master of practicing haha, I wish i had that kind of discipline. And you have a beautiful range of dynamics, it really takes the piece to another level . Do you do concerts? I want to attend one.
An amazing skill! Youve brought about the very soul of this musical piece. Despite the hard work and the talent that youve got, you are so lucky. The language of music is universal and you wont ever be suspended in limbo between the snap shot of the language that you left behind years ago and a new one that you never quite master to the degree that it became yours. Good luck to you. I am happy witnessing your meteoric traversing.
marry me... please! haha no really Chopin would have been proud to hear this song... you did such a wonderful job... rarely do i get the chance to hear people play music that speaks to the soul and you my dear have done just that...
She is amazing! I'm shocked that I didn't know her before now. With skills like that I should have favorited all her videos long ago. I've actually played this piece but I only ever made it sound crazed and frantic. Great work!
webarton, thats the biggest pile of BS I've ever heard! Pure BS! If there is anything she has - that's brilliance of tone and flawless technique. And I heard her live in Houston and she projects in the large hall like nobody's business. So what youre saying is just a bunch of amateurish nonsense.
You're a bit delirious and, certainly, way out of your league. If that's your attempt to get noticed - that's pretty pathetic.
It is amazing that she doesn't miss more notes with those tense wrists and beating into the piano.
Well, that's what you get! You have to compromise not missing notes for tone. She has tiny tone but she doesn't really miss notes. Her tone wouldn't carry in a hall without mics.
I want to help but she didn't answer my message. =(
WOW! webarton, before embarrassing yourself with such ignorant comments, you really ought to check yourself. You sound like a kid who, after playing with a do-it-yourself science kit at home, feels thoroughly equipped to teach world-class academicians how to be true scientists. Both hilarious and grotesque.
If your comment was not a prank, the person who needs help here is YOU!!!

Belamus 2 years ago
Belamus, allow me to explain why you were called an idiot: I have listened to nearly every version of this piece (& play it myself) and can tell you that other versions by far more talented pianists pale in comparison. Here is why: 1 Nobody has such uniquely singing tone as Lola. 2 Her rubato is most convincing and congruent. 3 Her phrasing and balance are superb. Then there are things that you cant appreciate such as making music vs. executing music.
MariaIn08 2 years ago 3

Amazing.

Wow! thanx Lola... you just inspired an amazing idea for a auditorium I will build.

I love you played so emotionally, without the exaggerated display of emotion. Ive listened so many renditions of piece, but this one, hands down is theeee best! I'm so glad I was able to watch it. Thank you for playing so beautifully. you are definitely a virtuoso.

PastTime777 2 years ago
The final for what level? Preparatory students? Undergrad? Graduate?
BARRUMUNDII 2 years ago
This isn't difficult enough to be final chopin and liszt and lots of composers made more difficult pieces

after hearing your performance of the rachmaninov 2nd sonata first movement, I have regained confidence that you can play musically. This is a wonderful performance, full of charisma, singing voices, forward movement and very well prepared dynamics. I think what makes this a musical performance compared to the "rach" is you arnt bouncing about too much, you are sat more still, and more relaxed. This shows in your sound... Wicked thanks :)
birminghamcritic1987 2 years ago
geeez, you never have any sense of hesitation, you must be a master of practicing haha, I wish i had that kind of discipline.

I am happy witnessing your meteoric traversing.

webarton, thats the biggest pile of BS I've ever heard!

Webarton 2 years ago
WOW! webarton, before embarrassing yourself with such ignorant comments, you really ought to check yourself. You sound like a kid who, after playing with a do-it-yourself science kit at home, feels thoroughly equipped to teach world-class academicians how to be true scientists. Both hilarious and grotesque.
If your comment was not a prank, the person who needs help here is YOU!!!
