FSX was only really designed to simulate flight in air, the boundress sky feature is to allow the game to be slightly more realistic and appeals to high altitude thin air simmers who wish to fly the Lockheed U2 or blackbird and experience what it's like to fly near the coffin corner.
I use orbitor which was designed for space flight and allows you to fly rockets in stages and processes real physics into the game., it is a fantastic sim which is free to download and educational.
I went to the website, the accuracy and detail of the model was very impressive. Does the package provide a way to export the model to an animation program, such as 3DStudio or Poser?
Another reason a runway takeoff was impossible: The X-15's landing skids and wheel had no retract mechanism-they were simply released so that gravity locked them in place. Also, the gear was only designed to support only the dry weight of the craft, about 8 tons less than the fully fueled weight.
Also, with a full load of fuel the X-15 would break in two on the ground withouit central support (it happened after an aborted ignition flight in which Crossfield wasnt able to dump the fuel before landing. X-15 broke upon touchdown from teh weight.)
Too bad FSX cant detect multiple aircraft as a B52 launch would be great.
Also note this program ran from '58/'59 through 1968. It was the single most successful X plan program ever.
you know i thought about the fact that they could put rockets on the nose of the x-15 so when reaching V-1 the rockets would have pushed the nose up so it can rotate
Rocket, not jet. You should read about these guys...one of the deaths (Michael Adams)occurred when the craft entered a spin at mach 5 (MACH ^*%$* 5!!!) and broke up a few minutes later in a 160 000 ft / min dive ($&%*^$%160K ft/min!!!!) The pilots were real men, that's for sure! Talk about pioneering.
Why couldn't you have made it launch from an aircraft as with the original? It would never have taken off from the ground in reality as the skids were too far back to allow it to rotate and take off.
oh yeah, the X-15!

for all you people complaining about the takeoff why dont you go and model and code a fully functional fsx addon aircraft.

Anaeroby engine, this machine can't take off alone.
Add a SR 71 turbo reactor in and it goes alone!

Does it matter where he took off? its a simulator, not real life. nothing happened. he was simply showing a plane.

But it should be real. That means, starting from a B-52. That here isnt realistic. But nice plane.

Due to FS constraints you cant but it is still very good.

There was once a proposal to strap on two Navajo missiles to the X-15 to get it into orbit.
That would've been cool.

Why is the X-15 taking off from the ground? The X-15 released at 500mph around 40,000ft altitude from a B-52 carrier

dragonblitz, there was only ONE fatality related to the x-15, Air Force Captain Mike Adams.

mach 4,65 is not possible in FSX Acceleration because in the Acceleration pack there is the speed limit of mach 2,4
