A deeper timbre as in "The Glory of Love", "Angelica" or "Stay Awhile"? Or as in "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" or "I Apologise". P.J. Proby imitated just about everybody from Rudy West to Paul Anka to Billy Eckstine to Elvis. He tried to sing in every key known to man, and a few known to woman! It would be interesting to know whether anything he ever recorded was the real P.J. Proby voice. LOL
Hmmmm...what can anyone say about Proby that doesn't get blasted as "rubbish" by his groupies? Even diehard fans (who still attend his shows) get thumbs down votes on youtube if they dare mention he used to drink heavily. No one is allowed to say how great his voice once was without also saying it's even better now...at 71? Get real.
And woe be to anyone who comments on any of the rubbish that comes out of HIS mouth. Proby should be thrilled that anyone is still talking about him AT ALL!
You do not get it and probably never will. If you are trying to promote P.J. Proby you should consult a real professional in the promotion business. You present yourself as a Proby friend and insider. Arguing with people on youtube about their opinions makes Proby look like an rank amateur. Has he come to this? How pitiful. Just imagine someone closely connected with Tom Jones yelling at other people on youtube. It wouldn't happen in a million years.
merrysnotproud This is my last word on the subject. You are absolutely right of course...arguing with numbskulls like you & one or two others with the same low IQ is really a waste of time.If silly people kept off youtube then I would never have to leave a reply.I know personally more than a hundred wonderful Proby fans/friends but there are always a couple of bad apples in there somewhere.I am now tossing you out of the apple barrel byeee
Whatever. How many times have you posted on youtube and various other forums that you were going to ignore people like me? You even tell others to do the same. But you just can't stay away. You keep coming back to make Proby look as though he lets his staff run amuck on the internet. A real world-class operation.
I just simply support the artiste I love.I just cannot understand so called fans who do nothing but needlessly & constantly criticize one of their supposedly favourite singers.Where is the logic in that? Ron
I'm so glad you've found your own true love. But most of us are no longer 12 years old. We grew up, moved on, and still play the music we enjoy. It's called MUSIC appreciation. Only a few people are as starstruck as you are. The rest of us are not in love with the singers whose music we like.
Performers are always criticized if they or their staff are rude to the public. There is something rather twisted about a performer who expects total acceptance and devotion from his fans.
So glad that Wes Bryan has solved the Peter James mystery. He worked with him & tells us about him on his blog & website.Nice to hear him say Peter is definitely NOT P.J.Proby. Ron
Wes Bryan's blog says Peter James was about 6 ft. tall, thin, dark hair, was a singer and producer, and wore an eye patch. He hasn't answered questions about what James produced nor speculated why only he (Bryan) remembers someone who recorded for various studios and wore an eye patch. Wes Bryan is advertising himself by dropping celebrity names all over youtube and he wants someone to publish his memoir.
To quote you from your comments below...don't believe everything you have read.
Wes WHO? Never heard of him and I've been into rock 'n roll since Bill Haley. I looked for him at Amazon and the only thing they had was a used 45 of Tiny Spaceman/Lonesome Love for $10. Nothing against the guy, but why should I take him as the last word on Peter James just because he's got a blog about people in the music business?
Wes Bryan appears to have spent a lot of time trying to look like James Dean (clothes, hair, frown, and pout) and singing vaguely like Ricky Nelson. His records had picture sleeves of him in classic Dean poses, looking pained and confused. He claims to have been friends or worked with Elvis, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Tuesday Weld, and many more. He also claims to have 8 gold records but he doesn't say what for. After listening to some of his records I doubt any of the gold was for singing.
P.J.Proby has said he is not Peter James. How come this is not enough proof for everyone?! Wes backs this up! still there are doubters. I don't get it!! Ron
You don't get it? What you don't GET is that nobody cares what YOU think or believe. P.J. Proby denied for 20 years that he was the Masked Singer, and then admitted it. And after years of being "sober" he threatened to blow up the EMI building. His interviews are so full of contradictory BS they are laughable. But hey, if you want to believe everything this man says, go for it! Nobody cares.
merrysnotproud Everyone knows you are a nasty piece of work & you have proved with this reply what a true Proby fan you are.... NOT! with fans like you Jim doesn't need enemies!
Oh I see...still running for "Fan of the Year", are we? As usual when you have no appropriate response, you accuse your audience of failing to measure up as a Proby fan. You really do need some new material.
Proby always has been his own worst enemy. By the way, have you counted "everyone" lately?
merrysnotproud, My response to your rubbish rambling was very appropriate. Your postings are more effective than the strongest sleeping pills! You have sent everyone to sleep....ZZZZZZZZ
I've found The Dells version on youtube! It's listed as Dells Medley - A Tribute to Johnnie Carter and the first song in the medley is After You. Has more of a 60's Soul feel.
I recently found that Billboard gave this After You / My Hands Are Tied single a 3-star rating in a May 1963 issue of their magazine. A later release of After You by The Dells (on the Argo label) was given a 4-star rating by Billboard in an October 1963 issue. The Dells version was actually recorded in October 1962 but wasn't released until the following year. Argo was a subsidiary of Chess Records, based in Chicago.
It appears rontenn is trying to turn his tasteless comment into an 'innocent' dig at my youtube name. Snot is a word used by 10 year-old children. Anyone else would see my name as 'Merry's Not Proud'. Hasn't rontenn ever heard of "Proud Mary"? He thinks he's a sixties music expert?
If rontenn would spend less time sucking up to a 'celebrity' (and bashing people who don't), and more time listening to music and studying its history, he might find out what it means to be a true MUSIC FAN.
Rontenn must be too wound up to watch that interview video about Elvis since he didn't explain PJ's mid 50's statement. s*** means snot? Sure thing. I don't believe he can backpedal fast enough to get out of that one.
Did someone go off his meds or od on Starbucks? I don't know about Chimes International but I'm curious whether PJ knows he has a loose cannon on the web who's speaking for him and shouting 4-letter words at people on youtube.
Loose cannons usually attract loose cannons! What four letter word do you mean then! I wrote an "S" plus 3 stars!...snot! By the way I'm not speaking for P.J. I'm speaking for myself & my comments were intended for one person only...The biggest Proby knocker on the planet!
rontenn, you said "He [Proby] won't tell YOU anything." Any reasonable person would take that as speaking for PJ. And who were you speaking for when you said "any of us"?
Hasn't it dawned on YOU yet that I don't care whether Proby tells me anything at all? His life story changes with every interview. Haven't you noticed? At present I'm trying to learn the truth about Peter James and, obviously, it isn't coming from Proby or anyone close to him.
Does Chimes International approve of your saying rude and insulting things to the youtube public while presenting yourself as a close associate of Proby? We all know what Tom Parker would have done about it.

Hi rontenn. Not sure what's with you and merrysnotproud but I can answer your question about the clip where P.J.said on camera he did Elvis demos in the mid 50's. See the Related Videos at the right? The Gene McDaniels who recorded '100 Pounds of Clay' and 'Another Tear Falls'? There is pronounced and rapid vocal vibrato in this recording of 'After You'. Gene McDaniels' voice exhibited little if any vibrato. If fact, when we do hear vibrato in a McDaniels recording it sounds as though he would rather not be holding that note. Peter James had no problem holding a note, while McDaniels' delivery was usually rather staccato...it was his style. Where is the resemblance?
