it's pretty sad when you consider yourself a great band, cover "spinal tap", and your version is much, much worse than the actors' version. this is a great song, but a horrendous cover.
i'm not a fan, but maybe was soundgaden the worst band ever? they are bad for a high school band. horrrible.
@what1111000 I agree. Guest, McKean and Shearer are severely underrated as musicians, and Soundgarden are terribly overrated. I was relieved to see grunge die.
@HillsideStrangler469 Taken as a verb rather than a noun, that would be possible. However, as the latter I fail to see how differing opinions relate to neurotransmission velocity.
@noi5emaker well you shouldn't base your assumption of their music by one mediocre cover. They have a lot of great music, some mediocre music, some great covers, some terrible covers. Point is, on the whole, Soundgarden really does play great music THAT THEY CREATED. their covers might not be so great, but theyre still good.
@Lawldudz I wasn't basing my assumption on this cover alone. I was basing it on their entire discography. I was an adult for the entire 90s. I remember only too well.
@noi5emaker well from the way you said "This cover proves they can only create shite noise" it seemed to me that you based it all on this cover. I apologise, I understand why someone wouldn't like Soundgarden etc.
So what if the song was a joke? It was still a great song and this version kind of sucks. The lyrics of the song were the damn joke, the music was actually great.
You can cover Metallica, you can cover Beatles, you can cover Mozart, you can cover Dylan, you can cover Bach, but you just can't cover Spinal Tap. They are above it all!
Seriously, lets critique a cover of a song that was meant as a joke in the first place...wow,running out of things to bitch and argue about has never been MORE apparent.....
I am sure SG got the joke, I mean they have songs called 'get on the snake' and 'black hole sun' if that isn't getting the joke, I don't know what is.
I was definitely born way before Soundgarden got together, and I can tell you that Spinal Tap was making fun of the metal bands of the 1970s like Sabbath and Zeppelin and Rainbow and Dio, not any grunge bands, not any industrial bands.
However, having said that, Chris Cornell sounds wayyyyyy offkey in this song.
Yes, I know that Spinal Tap was making fun of the bands you mention (and others). I guess what I'm saying is that Soundgarten became one of those ridiculous metal bands bands a sort of self-parody that is amplified by their covering this song. But that's just my opinion. You're entitled to your own.
Th song was originally a caricature of the hair metal scene at the time. I can assure you SG got the joke. They loved pulling the piss out of the hair metal bands as much as any grunge band and what better way to do it than with this song??
Hair metal didn't exist when that film came out - was actually directed at all those Deep Purple types from '70s mate. They didn't like it at the premiere and remained stony faced the whole way thru'!
This particular rendition proves how few Americans understand irony and how the 90s/00 scene became exactly what the film parodied.
uhh......im pretty sure Spinal tap WAS NOT making fun of bands like Soundgarden who were about as far from glam/corporate rock or butt rock as i like to call it, which is what Spinal Tap was mocking....Soundgarden were an extremely progressive band who ranged from heavy metal to punk to psychadelic blues....Soundgarden knows what Spinal tap was about, they just liked this song as its hella funny....

You were born in the year Soundgarden was formed. Please don't try to tell me what Spinal Tap was satirizing. They were making fun of pretentious metal/prog rock bands, of which, in my opinion, Soundgarden was one. I like Chris Cornell much better as a solo artist.
Yes, Spinal Taps main target were monstrosities like Def Leppard and Whitesnake, but Soundgarden had a tendency to take themselves far too seriously.
As Ray Davies of the Kinks said, "Rock is getting respectable. What a bummer."
Considering that filming for the movie "This is Spinal Tap" was finished no later than 1983, before Soundgarden had even formed, it seems unlikely that Reiner, Guest, McKean et al had Soundgarden specifically in mind, or even knew of Soundgarden, when writing the satirical songs.
Spinal Tap's sources, influences and targets are legion. The current band, as shown in the film, has elements of many bands of the 1970s to early '80s: Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Mott the Hoople, Uriah Heep etc. Then the flashbacks draw from early '60s Brit Invasion groups such as the Small Faces (Gimme Some Money) and early Beatles (All the Way Home is much like One After 909), and flower power and Sgt. Pepper influences ca. 1967-68.
when soundgarden covers a song, they always change things up and make it more rocking. and this is no exception, this cover kicks ass, i love it dearly
News flash to those who can't resist bitching about this. It's from a low budget film of a live show - two chaotic situations rolled into one. I own the video, so I know firsthand.
The original was played with 3 bass guitars so they might have used something to make their regular guitars sound lower and that could mess up the tuning/intonation. I like it though.
In answer to your question: NOT A @#(*&^%$!!! THING. I admit that 's harsh, especially from someone who was really pissed when Soundgarden broke up, but the original is classic. It also came as a limited edition cd digi-pack in the UK for Rusty Cage, along with Earache My Eye. They were different versions to the 'Louder than Live' recordings, I do believe.
