Rafael is a great a/c, french ingenuinity at its best! No doubt!
But please understand, F35 was build for the same reason why F16 was built instead of having F15.
F22 is a multi role aircraft, class apar, numero uno. But it's way too expensive to be manufactured in large numbers now, especially when there is no threat big enough to do so. F35 is a multirole a/c again, but much cheaper, meets all current and future threats and can be inducted in large numbers.

And yes the dutch have given the UK many things, but the UK have given them many things to. One of the newest things I can think of is freedom from nazi controlled holland.
