It's interesting to know that many companies are only sub manufacturing in China, then doing final manufacture somewhere else to protect themselves. Hopefully this is an issue that will be solved soon.
Great video. I enjoyed Chris Runckel's insights into how companies protect their IP through designing internal controls into the production process. Some more examples of how companies have successfully thwarted infringements to their IP (or painful lessons learnt) would be informative.
If you look around you will find lots of fake designer products floating around, which are mostly made in these countries and it does make you wonder a lot about IP. I wonder what would be the best way to solve such a problem?
There was a good 2 part documentary produced by the BBC recently on the increasing trade in counterfeit goods. The really scary side of the story is the massive increase in faked medicines and foodstuffs in recent years. As always its the world's poorest which bear the brunt of these dangerous crimes
I have heard of the whole fake medicine story and it simply annoys me to think that anyone wit a little bit of heart would even consider making coutnerfeit medicines which might result in killing people. Fake gucci bags are quite different to fake life saving drugs!
I;ve always been fascinated by IP. Thinking about it in the context of emerging markets just puts the thinking off the scale!
When I was shooting some of these interviews in Hong Kong, the cameraman told me about a theme park which was built in China, called Dismeyland (note spelling). It was ripped down by the authorities when Disney complained!

So many complex issues to think about here, but fascinating.

I met an IP guy from a major global software producer who was working in south east asia. he was tearing his hair out over the extent of the problem.

I recall in VN they had a totally different CD industry but it's based on what the market will pay....
