  • Finally a performance of opera that is as enjoyable to watch as it is to listen to.

Opera singers that dance... it's the future.

  • Please listen and watch other versions of this aria. You'll see that de Niese is a MASTER!! Her accuracy of pitch, the naturalness of the singing, the velocity. and ALL that while moving around and ACTING!! AMAZING. Clearly one of the BEST. The voice she is using is perfect for this genre. Why do you think they picked her for Glyndebourne...

  • Fantastic singing!!

  • who is the stage director?

  • I can't believe it's taken until now for people to incorporate choreography into opera!!!

  • I just love it :D

  • I can understand how some people don't like her voice. I don't think it's especially unique, you could say, but it's a good, strong, clear voice, and her acting is superb. This is one of the best versions of Giulio Cesare out there - the cast is great, the scenery is. ...interesting ?? lol, and great to watch.

  • WOOOOOOW YOU GUYS ARE SO JEALOUS!!!! she's hot AND she can sing. stop hating on beautiful people!!! I don't know you personally Danielle, but don't listen to these jealous people. you're AMAZING

  • @jbdny Of course, I DON"T hate her, she is a wonderful woman and performer... just her voice is not pleasing to MY ear, and it does NOT mean she is nothing.....

  • @jbdny She is hot, but the voice is nothing.

  • WOOOOOW YOU ALL ARE SOOOOO JEALOUS!!!! she's hot AND she can sing!! stop hating on beautiful people. i don't know you personally danielle, but don't listen to these haters!! you're AMAZING

  • belissimo !!!!

    bravo !!!

  • Her voice is quite hard to stand.... recently there have been much more pleasing version of this aria uploaded on youtubeby Ms Pasichnyk from the Chamber Opera in Warsaw. Simply a feast to listen!

  • I love the way she moves

For those who do not like the staging, there are various other versions available which are more classical.

Why waste your time criticizing when it is possible to have a version that will please you more.

This is not the only version right?

Art is made to explore, nothing should be frozen. Sometimes is good, sometimes is bad, but we must dare. Is the essence of art.

Danielle de Niese, I think I love you.

  • I agree with the art statement, less with the De Niese statement.

After listening to some other interpretations, I find de Niese's interpretation to seem more difficult than it should. I think this restricts her.

I do love, though, that she and Christophe are both interpretating their roles (and of course the director) as being two children left in charge of their huge empire (though it is conquered by Caesar.)

  • I am just curious, have you ever tried to sing fast high pitched coloratura and jump at the same time?

I have and, yes, it is difficult; basically you want to breath faster when you must be supporting your singing...

    To criticize is easy, though.

  • Cleo is better then her back up dancer on the right. And of course there is incest! They were engaged. They never did get married but Tolomeo has some serious sadism issues and desires power and Cleopatra is powerful. He want to exert his dominance over her and that thought is what turns him on.

  • Is it just me, or does it seem like she has just a slight lisp?

  • well,I also hear it.hum,not good.

  • i for one, do not like the dancing.

  • well i like the dancing!

  • Cleopatra Spears?!?!

    absurd.

  • I believe many of those commenting negatively on the dancing in this performance, don't understand that it was choreographed to be campy. The director wanted to emulate the vibrant costuming and dancing of the Bollywood film genre. Once you understand what's going on perhaps you can lighten up.

  • i'm sorry - i hear a lisp. am i going crazy or does anyone else hear that in the ever-popular miss thang de niese?

  • No legato.

  • I agree, the dancing is really bad. I kinda takes away from the performance :-(

  • OMG, I loathe the dancing so much. I like the costums and the overal staging, but the dancing is horrible. Good singers are capable of portraying a character without bouncing around. Was the director out of ideas? These are trained singers, not trained dancers - would you ask world class dancers to sing along with the music of swanlake while dancing? Maybe just "lalala", which compared to singing would be equal to what the singers are doing compared to dancing here. Totally ruins it for me =(

  • It's Bollywood-style dancing. You should watch the commentaries in order to see what the director was trying to do. I don't like what he's done in all of the areas he's put it in this opera, but some places is very fitting - especially for an "exotic" character like Cleopatra...

  • I love it. It's not about singing or dancing it's about performing and entertaining an audience. This production of Cesare was so fresh and new and was attended by many young people who will be the attendees of operas in the future. Opera is evolving beautifully in my opinion.

  • If you do a bit of background reading on Ms De Niese, you'll find she actually IS a trained dancer.

    Just saying.

  • What's with the incestiousness?? And the having to sex things up??!!! I like the playfulness - as it should be - but the sexyness is unnecessary...

  • There is no incestiousness...shes leading him on- teasing him- acting like a woman. Cleopatra knows that Tolomeo is a little brat and needs to be brought back down from his cloud 9

  • I saw this production at the Lyric in Chicago-- she was incredible and the production was surprisingly fantastic (reminder-- its a good five-hour long opera, uncut!)

  • Actually it was bit cut up.

They deleted Cleopatra's aria "tutto puo donna vezzosa", Achila's aria "se me non se crudele", Sesto's aria "L'aure che spira" and rearranged acts 2 and 3

  • Thanks for letting us know. Im going to find these arias. Im curious now. :)

  • Touche! I noticed that afterwards when looking at the original tracks... thanks!

  • Also, many productions don't give Nerenus his aria, "Che perde un momento." If someone could post the Glyndebourne version. The reorchestration is wonderful and the dancing is really kitsch.

  • True...i love that aria..its so fun to sing!!!
