  • Eddie channeling Jimmy Page 1:13

  • this really makes me hate sammy hagar, Roth rules

  • This is so cool..

  • It is from the club days which would have been pre-1978. But it is cool that somebody posted it.

  • @Froorgasim Dave is a douche PERIOD!! They just got done with the new album and Eddie and Dave could not be in the same room during the recording....this is NOT going to end well!! SAMMY, WHERE ARE YOU BRO?!?

  • @faithycoins How do you know this? Something you heard on the radio or were you in the 5150 studio during recording? I hate speculaion on such things..Dave and the Van Halen bros have been together for years, they looked fine on stage. I like Van Halen with Sammy Hagar like I like ACDC with Brian Johnson, but I started with Dave and Bon...so to me it is great that at least can get back together with Dave...they should get Mike back though and quit screwing around.

  • His guitar sounds so fresh and exhilarating ,after all these years

  • listen 2 this riff man, so fuckin tasty

  • Dave didn't join until 1974, so this couldn't be before then. I'd say 1975/76

  • if this was a demo this would be more improved from every parts, and if if you listen to any other demos from 78-80 they dont have the same sound like this one

  • Dis aint DLR sounds more like dat other singer lame onw

  • @stikireferer This does not sound like sammy hagar. Fail.

This is DLR You cleearly dont know van halen they sounded different a while ago.

And "Dat other singer?" Yah you really know van halen a lot.

  • @kDelPrete101 i didnt listend to the entire song its true dey jus sound good,,nd i know necesary to like van halen alot ...

  • @kennyyankees25 its ok i understand

  • I wonder if Gene Simmons thought of stealing Eddie for Kiss? Then again, SpaceAce was hugely popular and it would have been ridiculous considering Kiss was at the top of their game by 1977.

  • believe it or not, DLR has a nice tenor quality to his voice on this video!

  • Oh how to be blessed with being able to grow up in the San Gabriel Valley when "The boys" were in their heyday. I've followed them since their"Mammoth" days into the present. I graduated just a few yrs. after Alx and Eddie from Pasadena High and my mom, God rest her soul from Muir Where Diamond Dave is from. Just alot of great Rock'N'Roll memories. Very few people in this world have been as fortunate as I was to have been born not only in The United States but In the best part

  • wow Daves voice is amazing !!!! , no mikey

  • Eddie looks funny with a Les Paul

  • His second solo was like a cleanly executed, fiery, pumped up version of Jimmy Page.

  • I agree with u. This version is a lil better...n faster/funky. Thx 4 sharing.

  • I like this version better than the original.

  • For a long time, I thought Dave was singing -

BIG BITCH YOU'RE HEADED FOR A WHOLE LOTTA TROUBLE.

  • I must have wrote that comment like shit. I did not know the Beat It guitar was Eddie when I first heard it I don't listen to Michael Jackson and had no reason to assume it was Eddie - he did it anonymously. I was pissed because I thought nobody could duplicate Eddie at all and here is this prick on a Michael Jackson song doing it. This was when the song first came out - YES I KNOW IT IS EDDIE

  • simple great riff

  • This sounds like it could be a Simmons demo from 1976.

  • Is it me or does a LOT of these demo songs strangely like the first few Kiss albums? And I don't mean because Simmons paid for the demo, they clearly do not have their signature sound of the early 80's - good shit. I'll never diss the first and only band I ever stop what I did to listen to. Here's a funny, the first time I heard Beat It by Jackson I was pissed because the guitar player sounded exactly like Eddie, nobody has ever come close - then I heard it was him, I knew I was a fan then!

  • the beat it solo was eddie

  • @592220 The Beat It solo was Eddie man. R u being sarcastic I hope

  • @592220 gene was their producer

  • Dave had a more pronounced mid-70's vocal style on this track........I like it better when his voice became deeper and whiskey-stained.

  • Much cooler version!!

  • Much better version! Less production and commercial sounding! But it was mostly about LP sales I guess?

  • Clearly the song structure is better than the album. This version of the song has way more attitude.

  • This is definitely Van Halen and definitely not from 1980....perhaps from '76 around the time they were playing live demos of 'Fools'...?

  • I think so.

  • Comment removed

  • i wish i knew where u drugs are

  • pretty cool

  • eddy has an ARMADILLO in his pants at 1:25!!!!

  • ppretty sure this isnt from 1980

  • why didn't they keep the vocal harmonies for the album version? shame

  • he plays guitar for the band, why wouldn't he be playing the guitar in the pics?

  • these guys' music is unlike anything else out there, you can't help it like it!!!

  • @zzzthaoster Damn straight!

  • Damn! these guys changed my life. This demo is raw, kind weird but net to hear. Shows the under rated production talents of Ted Templmen (think thats hows you spell his name)

  • my life too. you're on the money about templeman.

  • This is killer..really hard-edged...

  • Mikey is not singing on this demo or playing

  • then who is playing that thumping bassline? and although backing vocals are minimal in this demo, SOMEONE is singing them. i do believe i hear Mike in there.

  • Mark Stone, this is a 1974 demo, before Mike was in the band

  • ok...makes sense...didn't realize the demo was recorded that early.

i have "angel eyes" which i think is from that same demo session. i know it was recorded @ Cherokee, anyways....but what i'm wondering is.....is it Dave playing the acoustic guitar on "angel eyes"? or is it Ed? Dave's actually a fairly decent guitarist. (unbeknownst to many).

  • i believe its dave, because i have a photo of him playing guitar from that session

  • This version has an entirely different feel to it than the one that ended up on "Women And Children First"(My favorite VH Album).

We covered this when I was in "Love & Rotation and, believe me, this version would have been much easier to pull of than the one we "tried"... Then again, we probably wouldn't have added this version to our setlist because of the mood this demo version creates. I prefer the gritty, down & dirty, smoke-filled, empty whiskey bottles all around version. =VH= RULES!

  • I was in a band called ON THE ROXX...we "attempted" to play "Big Guns" by Skid Row and it never sounded right...

    I know what you mean...

Our originals ROCKED OUT! "Caught In The Act"..."Edge of a Dream"..."Flesh Tattoo", "Love Like a Needle" , "Cryin Shame"... uh, I could go on... "Pretty Deadly"..."Heart of Stone", "London Bridge" "Go For Your Guns"...uh..."Until Forever", "End of Your Rope" what else? "Rip It Up" uhh..."Take a Walk..." we were working on "World of Pain" that was awesome...

  • Lose the mullet spike. Times they are a changin'...

  • Sounds damn good!

  • THIS STUFFS IS WAILING

  • Cool!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • sounds like you are experienced at getting facials from your dad's "lollipop." you cum-drunk queer. go die off somewhere with a passy up your ass while you are tossing a fat mans salad.

  • What I find most interesting about the old demos is how it proves the band evolved over time into greatness. It wasn't totally there in the beginning. It took time and a lot of hard work.

  • Durr. He's the fuckin lead guitarist and so you need a guitar in you hands (constantly) to perform a song...ya shit-for-brains dill hole. And your insecurity comment..You must be a cock sucking faggot.

  • This is from the 1973 demos. Take Your Whiskey Home, was before Mike joined the band, which explains the absense in his high-pitched backing vocals. It also explains why they sound different here, Dave sounds younger, and Eddie hadn't yet started tuning his guitar half a step down.

Also, the demo version didn't have the acoustic intro, which isn't here.

Final point, in "VAN HALEN:the early years" Snake guitarist(the band that Mike was in before Van Halen) said that Mike showed him this demo

  • thanks for that insight... good post for all VH fans

    Brad

  • Boy, I dunno. This doesn't sound like VH to me for a variety of reasons. The key is too high for Dave, there are too many parts to the harmony with no sign of Mike's trademark voice in there and the whole thing is a little too "canned" sounding. VH is just not this crisp.

If it is - Boy somebody kicked their asses on details in the studio for a really long time to get this one done.

I think if you'd presented this without calling it a WACF demos, I'd have guessed it was a cover.

  • I like the back vocal part mostly in this version.

  • i just love van halen, they're the best and everybody who thinks differnt (against them) is an idiot and can fuck the fuck off

  • I definetly like the final version better :)It has more bottom and balls than this version.

  • Dave looks like rick medlocke from blackfoot in the shot wearing the silver 80s miami vice outfit :) Or should I say Medlocke was trying too look like DLR in the mid 80s ? HEHE

  • that doesn't sound like mike... i mean it sort of does but mike has more soul in his voice... are ya sure it isnt mark stone

  • Much better than the "Woman and Children first" Version. Very Nice Harmony Vocals!

  • This is a very young VH. Awesome.

  • Yeah, this was DEFENATLY off the cherokee demos from 1973 with Mark Stone on Bass. Other songs from that demos include Angel Eyes and Fools.

  • "Trust me, NOBODY had to MAKE Dave smoke and drink!More like make him stop!" *laughing*

He's a health freak nowadays, but the man likes to enjoy himself. Hey, who doesn't.

  • ABSOLUTE GOLD!

    Gotta love the internet.

    Saw them in Boston 07.

From the second they took the stage....till the time they left....they FUCKIN ROCKED!

No fuckin around! Just 100% Rock and Roll!

What happened to ROCK music anyway.....

    I remember it....

and I'm pretty sure it was a good thing.

  • Much cooler version, rocks harder and better key changes.

  • thats dave. cool demo

  • You are correct, this was recorded LONG before WACF was done.

  • This sounds so much different than WACF...sounds alot like the Gene Simmon's demos.

  • I LOVE YOU MAN,TY

  • Wow! Dave's voice sounds so different! I hear Ed and Al used to make Dave smoke and drink right before recording vocals to make his voice sound gravel-ly for the record. This demo is probably more of what he sounded like otherwise.

  • Trust me, NOBODY had to MAKE Dave smoke and drink!More like make him stop!

  • Awesome!

  • best vh album of all time

1st is pure gemz thats right but wacf is the mst partyer whit dimond dave completly wildz

  • wow, i´m impressed about EVH guitars, one of the first "frankesteins" with a danelectro neck, incredible. This guy can play with a broom and got the same sound, Eddie rocks

  • Ed did play with a broom on VH 3 album, and yes! it did sound like Ed!! King Edward forever!!

  • Sure as hell sounds like Dave to me. I searched on here to find this song about a year ago and there was nothing. Thanks for posting this. Demo or whatever VH rocks brother. Now if they would only put their grievances aside and get the hell on tour I'd get my ole 40 year old ass out to The Verizon Center and see them. LOL

  • No..thats Dave alright.

  • that dosent sound like DLR either.

  • wow, lol.thanks for sharing.

  • Dude where do you get these f'ing gems??

  • This is not from 1980...this is from their club days.

  • Well it was on the WACF Demos, so I called it as I saw it.

  • @Skibble5150 I'm wondering if that's even VH, the vocals give it away.

  • right or wrong it's interesting reading your comments...regardless, these music gems are special...to me anyway...it's like ...

    "new mighty van halen"

  • that doesnt sound like mike anthony

  • This is NOT a demo from the WACF sessions!! This is actually from the very first Van HALEN demo, recorded at Cherokee Studios back in 1974, when Mark Stone was still playing bass. Notice the lack of Mikey in the background vocals.

  • No, Mikeys there, thats not Ed hitting the background notes.

  • @5150EVH5150 I don't hear any real high notes dude or anthoneys tone sorry

  • Didn't every girl just want to be Valerie??? You are loved EVH - here's praying for a full recovery - eff the drugs and drink - don't take it home - your son is more important than them... and your fans love you!!!

  • awesome man, thanks for posting it.
