Thank you for making your wisdom available free of charge. Your ideas are clear, concise, and delivered with a passion that glimmers with sincerity.
I recently left academia. I was in my 3rd year of my Ph.D. and realized that I had no clue what the vision was of the university or the department. I decided to leave, and explained to my committee members that I felt purposeless in what I was doing. I am much happier now that I have left.
For 15 years I worked in natural resource management (public sector). I was promoted until I was leading a fabulous team to support the Minister in Parliament; important work that helped the environment. BUT it was insanely stressful. I changed jobs to be a customer service manager for an ISP. I hated it 'cause I felt like was just sucking as much money out of customers as they would tolerate us taking. Now I've returned to uni: conservation psychology.
I'm working with a friend's dad's business and he operates from no purpose at all, and it shows. I hope he comes to the realization that his business is suffering because of this. It's made working for him quite challenging.
