Welcome to the fustrating world of hydro my friends, what you should be askin yourselves is this, to what end? Somthing so small won't even justify the nute cost let alone, everything else, so will it work sure, will it be worth your time compared to just plants in soil, no
also tote tubs cant handle the wieght after the plantz get any decent mass on them, your net pot willl fall through or lid will bow inward really bad until it eventually buckles-
We have just written a course in Aquapoincs (fish and plants in one - the fish by-products create nutrients for the plants), and our principal has written a book called Commercial Hydroponics, you can get it as an ebook if your interested.
You used peters all purpose plant food. If i am not mistaken Peters is fertilizer and not specially formulated for hydroponic systems. Is it safe for me to use Peters or anything similar to my hydroponic system? I noticed that the nutrients that you are using have a ratio of 20-20-20 isn't that ratio to high for some plants?
@tragicallyj92 You'd have to make sure that the water is high enough to get to the roots of your plants. Also that there is enough nutrients in the tubs to satisfy your plants. Make sure they don't get overly wet because you can get root rot.
I am currently growing bhut jalokia pepper plants, aka, The Ghost pepper. After watching this video, I have adopted your idea, an I am currently using this system. So far, I have seen far more then incredible results! Due to the Ghost pepper being one of the most difficult, and or more finicky plants to grow, At first, I was worried about water temperature, as optimal soil temperature should be at around 78-81 degrees Fahrenheit. Reg of this, they are growing amazingly well! Thx :D
@necrolyptic You can grow EVERYTHING in this except Root Plants like Potatoes & stuff that forms underground. -But every other Vegetable , flower & herb- YES :)
I agree that creating the net pot holes is one of the toughest job to do. But, at least I know how to do now and I think I can manage for 2 holes... thank you for your video.
Thanks. This is a well-done video. I did tomatoes outdoors hydroponically for a couple of years. Last year, the rain affected my mineral balance and I got blossom rot. I'm going to try lettuce and spinach indoors this winter using a system like this and florescent lights.
a true hydoponic system only wets the roots 5 minutes every hour(leaving the other 55 minutes for them to suck up oxygen) I would think this setup would just drown and chem burn your plants.
@riverlifeva It's deep water culture. I'm doing something similar with 5 gallon buckets and an 18 gallon resevoirs with fish... more of a deepwater aquaponics: growing veggies and fish to fry. Many possible ways to do hydroponics. This video is deep water culture which has great results.
As long as you keep your air pumps going the plants will not drown. Plants always has air/water/nutes and will thrive.
A larger water capacity will greatly reduce the PH and nute swings.
@deadman12078 I read on a website that this system wont yeild as good as a result as the "ebb and flow". Did you find this to be true? Also, if growing lettuce indoors did you buy a specific lamp or will a flourscent light do?
@itsjustdeb579 Aquaponics has it's drawbacks and benefits. aquaponics(.)net(.)au has some great info. I just started a test rig 2 months ago and I'm impressed with plant/root growth and all I'm putting in the water is fish food. Growing tobacco, tomato, and strawberries.
Deep water culture requires nothing fancy, just air pumps, water and nutes. PH and PPM have to be monitored closely. I'm using 26w CFL lights 6500k for vegging and 6500/2700k for flowering.
@itsjustdeb579 Last year I grew leaf lettuce, carrots, silvery fir tree tomatoes indoors with soil and they did great. With the same 2700/6500k lights staggered. As I watered I would rotate the plants so they would get a little of both spectrums.
Started DWC mid summer for fun and I can say output is about double that of soil.
My cousin grows hemp... He starts his plants with aquaponic/aeroponics than switches to ebb and flow for flowering. Many methods man. All depends on what best suits you
Looks really easy.. but i did not have the time or the tools to build my own so i ended up buying a SunLit Box.... Had everything that Beginners needed.. it showed me from start to finish how to grow.... Great system but just want to grow, not build a system. Just my 2 cents!
For about 10 bucks you can get a complete set of hole saws at harbor frieght that go almojsst as large as 5 inchs in diameter which will make making your holes so much easier and so much more precise. Great system I like the way you made your support structure.
Hydro is only more water efficient than soil for large scale growing. For small number of plants hydro uses alot more water and is actually quite wastful compared to soil. Soil plants use as little as 500ml per day. With hydro system you have to have enough water just to cover the pump. @hayworth111 thats a 24 hour thing man. And one thing he didnt mention is that you want to get rid of that water every 7-10days and replace with fresh water and new nutrients. Also when emptying container, remember to clean it. With warm water and a towel to clear out any remaining things from last water. ANy other questions about hydroponics message me!!
I'm not sure if i missed it but how often should the air pump be turned on per day, or is it continuous? Also do you know how much energy it uses on average per week?
I have worked with a company on getting set up they have a great website and great prices. I cant add dot com to the end of the website name so just tack on dot com at the end of the company name. Purelyhydroponic add dot com
has anybody tried the 8 part nutrients like the canna range with the individual elements. i haven't been able to find equipment for measuring the individual elements. for domestic hydroponics i have not seen equipment for measuring the individual elements and cf meters don't tell you individual nutrient levels. what do commercial hydroponic factories use.
Is it just me but the spacing of these plants is really tight. I bet half of those plants will die before giving any fruit. I would put no more than six holes for peppers or tomatoes or anything else ;) on those lids. There are large plants and then there are small plants; this system might be perfect for lettuce, though.

thank you send me answer and one more thing is i saw your all purpose plant food 20 20 20 is that one time put into the water basket or how long plant food will refill on it?
@free6006 It's just regular water, with plant food added. Get a ph tester, if the ph gets too high, there's an additive that you can use (one brand name is 'ph down') to fix that.
nice this video has helped me out alot.. I've watched about 10x lol but need more details about the nutrients. any suggestions? is the water ever changed?
would it be wise to put some sort of drain valve for replacing the water? also should we concider letting the water sit for 24 hours before use to let the chlorine out
wow my unit is sooo much better than these things, stack two units, cut a hole in one side for air bubbles to rise, you can also put a submersible heater, and an ultrasonic fog generator and you get the sweetest nutrient film hydroponic unit...
do you need to change the water? if so, how often and how is that done?

@trojanshawaii Sure. Just drill a bunch of holes in the cups so the water flows through easily.

Question: Is there any reason the containers are so huge? The container doesn't need to hold that much water does it?
If anybody can answer, thank you very much.

would it be wise to put some sort of drain valve for replacing the water? also should we concider letting the water sit for 24 hours before use to let the chlorine out

In the future, maybe double or triple stacking 18-gallon tubs would minimize bulging from the water?

wow my unit is sooo much better than these things, stack two units, cut a hole in one side for air bubbles to rise, you can also put a submersible heater, and an ultrasonic fog generator and you get the sweetest nutrient film hydroponic unit...

A 3" hole saw attachment would have made a even and precise hole. For future reference.
