@alhabbo We elect representatives, but by law they are binded to the constitution. Of course, in the last 30 years they've totally ignored the constitution, but nevertheless, we are a constitutional republic. We democratically ELECT representatives by a vote, but they are ideally binded by upholding the rule of law; the U.S. Constitution. A constitutional republic has real checks and balances and restraints on the gov to protect the freedom of everyone, not just the majority.

To answer you're question, I don't disagree we have some generally "democratic" principles, but you seem to forget that a democracy is not a free society for the minority. We were designed to have democratic elections, but have the maxium amount of freedom for all via restraints on what the elected can pass.
The restraints on the democratic process makes us a Constitutional Republic. We elect representatives by a majority vote, but they must not infringe on the rights of the minority. Both meanings of "democracy" and "republic" have been diluted by the left and right... and so to have a real debate both parties have to reveal their interpretation of each. Ironically, you're interpretation of "democracy" could be very well like my interpretation of a "republic".
Anyways, I recognize the democratic principles of elected reps and passing laws by majority vote, but there must be those restraints to prevent the majority raping the minority.

Wikileaks is jeopardizing many lives? And how many lives is it saving? US citizens are not the only ones who need to know this information.
The Honduras papers are full of the wikileaks concerning that country's coup. We need to know that US military contractors in Afghanistan are using child sex slaves. Pakistan's Supreme Court has already ruled that the leaks should continue to be available there...it ruled that they were in the public interest.
This reporting was insular.

Private citizens can sue a company for damages or the person responsible if their info leaks without their permission whereas the government is an organization constructed solely to serve the people of its country. Teenage girls do not create facebook profiles as part of their responsibility to serve all internet users. If they did this would be a fair comparison.

This discussion reminds me about how people talk about marijuana use. Everybody seems to agree that Manning, if guilty, is a criminal but disagree whether or not Assange is a criminal. It's similar to a general attitude that says marijuana growers may be criminal but not smokers. Well, in my opinion, Manning isn't a criminal simply because people want to know the truth and he is supplying it just like marijuana smokers are supplied by growers. The criminals in both cases are the government.

Democracy is not freedom. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. Freedom comes from the recognition of certain rights which may not be taken, not even by a 99% vote. Those rights are spelled out in the Bill of Rights and Constitution. Freedom is the well armed Lamb protecting it's right to life.

@alhabbo We elect representatives, but by law they are binded to the constitution. Of course, in the last 30 years they've totally ignored the constitution, but nevertheless, we are a constitutional republic. We democratically ELECT representatives by a vote, but they are ideally binded by upholding the rule of law; the U.S. Constitution. A constitutional republic has real checks and balances and restraints on the gov to protect the freedom of everyone, not just the majority.

To answer you're question, I don't disagree we have some generally "democratic" principles, but you seem to forget that a democracy is not a free society for the minority. We were designed to have democratic elections, but have the maxium amount of freedom for all via restraints on what the elected can pass.

The restraints on the democratic process makes us a Constitutional Republic. We elect representatives by a majority vote, but they must not infringe on the rights of the minority. Both meanings of "democracy" and "republic" have been diluted by the left and right... and so to have a real debate both parties have to reveal their interpretation of each. Ironically, you're interpretation of "democracy" could be very well like my interpretation of a "republic".
