Its hard to listen to any other Blues player besides him that wasn't; John Lee Hooker, Lead Belly, Robert Johnson, John Hurt, Son House, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley, and Skip James. R.L. is favorite. I can hear his influence in the black keys, the white stripes, Eagles of Death Metal, and Dan Sartain.
This is great! This is some real blues for sure! Another great thing is he's playing a Dan-Electro guitar, which was made about 2 miles from my house in beautiful Neptune City, NJ. I never realized they were such a great blues axe!
You can just tell by watching him live, R.L. just loved to perform. I wish I had discovered his music before the Lord took him. May he always be remembered!
Don't know why but this music makes me feel sorta bad ass ha. Fuck the music nowadays, I mean there is a lot of good stuff out there just people my age don't go through the effort of finding it pity really. The media wants to keep it simple so the kids don't have to think, easier to brainwash them. Just had to get that off my chest great music thanks for sharing!:)
Cedric Burnside hittin' the skins! I got to see R.L. twice and both times were great. Once at "Upstairs at Nicks" and the other time was a sold out show at The North Star Bar in Philly. R.I.P. R.L. and thank you. Kenny and Cedric are carrying the torch now.
Good ol guy I do miss him. Some friends and I got to party with him and T-Model ford one night in Columbus, ohio. I even bought Kenny Brown a beer with my last five bucks I had...too funny! Thanks to the Manager Amos Harvey for allowing us to meet up with him backstage. We must of made an impression for him to hang out at our tavle that night. RIP RL, we'll keep the music alive for you!
r.l never really set out to be a bluesmaster, he was just a man who loved to play his music and ended up getting some attention for it in his later years. i'm going to echo hogfan here and say it seems you don't really understand blues that well, blues predates intellectually property law so it is traditional for bluesman to play there own arrangements of traditional songs and sometimes those of other bluesman. i'm sorry r.l wasn't good for you.
R.L. didn't come from the Mississippi Delta, he came from Holly Springs, MS, which is the hill country of Mississippi and the sound and vibe differs from delta blues. EVERYONE learns second hand from someone and he was obviously "good enough" for thousands of fans worldwide, if you don't like him, fine, but don't hold yourself up as someone that's an authority on what is and isn't a "blues master", it's just your opinion and one that's NOT shared by most blues fans.
R.L Burnside and Asie Payton, the best blues players that recently died, that stayed blues, never got huge, but respect still to john lee hooker r.i.p
if u havnt seen (You see me lauphin? the last of the hill country bluesman.) then you need to see it him and some others i never heard of where on there and it was kick ass!
it was a few years ago I saw the documentary You See Me Laughin' on IFC with RL and old T Model Ford, among a couple others. A year later it was on again and it reminded me to do a search for this guy, whereupon I had found out he had passed on in the year after I saw the documentary. Dont put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Yeah, well well well!
Boshanks; Kenny Brown is superb and it's so nice to see someone playing a guitar that doesn't happen to be a Fender Strat. John Mayer eat your heart out!
deadoralives69; Yes, i know RL played a Squier Strat at some point. It's just that on THIS particular clip he isn't using one. Couldn't agree with you more about John Mayer. Most today consider him a 'Bluesman'!
I feel ya man! I really miss R.L.. I had the chance to play on the same bill as him once and also got to party with him backstage, but most importantly I got to see him play 3 times and besides Jerry Lee Lewis, it was probably the best show(s) I have seen.
wookiespal; Gave you a 'thumbs up'!Oh yes, that's true about the mesmeric feel. Fat Possum artists are just like a breath of new air in this musically overprocessed world. Jnr.Kimbrough was pure magic. Have to get Robert Palmer's film "Deep Blues" out and have a look again. How i wish Rob, RL.B, Jnr and Lonnie Pitchford were still around.
Thanks! I live in Mississippi not far from the fat possum studio. It feels strange not having those guys around anymore. They were all very approachable, down to earth guys. Just regular people. Check out fat possums "you see me laughing" dvd.
Ah yes, i've been meaning to get that DVD. Thank you for the reminder. I'd love to get to the area where you live. The musical history is rich there.
Yes being a lover of pre-war blues, I'm very glad to have been born and raised here. That has allowed me to meet G.D. Wardlow, who has the biggest pre-war record collection in existence. And have been able to talk to Dick Waterman. He was Son Houses manager in the 60s
FullRaidersAlchemist; Yeah, what an amazingly bold label this is. Puts across some of the most intense, unpretentious artists on this planet. Some of them may play off key but the music is straight from the soul. This seems to be missing in music today. Honesty , that is.
Thanks again to the tube host here for the great replay as well! After I hear this again i'll go back to checking all the Coyle Bramhall/Smokestack tubes I can get.
It's about the feeling they put into it and how that makes you feel. Thanks all for sharing the good blues!
been playing guitar for some 25 years and this makes me wanna play for ever... it's like what the f*** are ya meant to do with your life. This was a revelation.

Poor Boy and I'm a long way from home
The world can't do me no harm
At night I can't stay alone
No No No
World can't do me no harm
Poor Boy and I'm a long way from home
World can't do me no harm
Poor Boy and I'm a long way from home
But the world can't do me no harm (4x)

Truly one of the greatest under-discovered blues masters.
And respect to Kenny Brown. If you like his slide-guitar work, then I recommend you listen to Jumper On The Line from the album Burnside on Burnside.

I think RL chose just the right musicians. Saw him live at "Cafe Campus Blues" in Montreal about 5 yrs ago. He set the whole place on fire!

I recall John Lee Hooker saying "With the REAL Blues there aint no chord changes."
With all the guitar wankers around doing their fancy heavy metal tricks THIS is the REAL deal! Basic but so effective.
mojoelem 4 years ago 2
The one chord songs give a hypnotic feel. People would dance all night when he played at junior kimbroughs juke joint!
