Ooh man. Our dial up used to be so shaky. It was music to my ears when I got the confirmation tone.
Today I got I got high-speed broadband connection 24/7 in my flat with full wireless coverage. I don't even think about the connection anymore. It is so easy.
Broadband is used rather widely now, even in the developing countries like Vietnam (personal experience). But I'm not sure about the penetration of broadband in 3rd world African nations.
@Gold753 the internet is a complex system of interlinked computer documents and files all networked via an immense system of BILLIONS of computers the internet is one of the most complex things on earth and it really inst one thing at all
Omg, I do not miss that sound at all. I'm soo grateful for broadband the anxiety I use to feel, waiting and hoping the internet would connect, was too much to handle, when i had a deadline. To think I hear kids today moaning when a page takes 10 seconds longer to load, they should of been online 10 years ago.
@Sweetstarlight I was on the internet 15 years ago, and 10 seconds of waiting drives me just as insane as 20-30 minutes of waiting did back then, whats the point of progressing at all, i might aswell just go live in the fucking mud.
That only goes to show what a bloody stupid and pointless sequence of sounds that was. Imagine. When the Internet was conceived, somebody said: "Hey! We should have the same sequence of random noises play every time somebody tries to connect!"
@sphereballs Umm, have you ever heard of telephone network control codes?
These "random noises" actually tell your ISP that your modem wishes to establish a connection with them using the parameters (username, password, etc) that you entered.
@leewatts Good old days? You're young! I remember when the standard was 1200 baud. I was one of the first to get the "new" 2400 baud modems and I thought I was "cooking with gas now!". Crazy fast (for the time)....LOL
@GuessWhoLostTheGame Yeah lol I have fond memories of this sound when I was about age 3 to age 9. We used dial up internet primarily until 2005. And we STILL use it when our high speed refuses to work. Ahhh, good ol' dial up.
so this is the real World Wide Web then, two women pensioners who are brilliant at impersonating dial up modems. those two women pensioners were right at the rate the World Wide Web is expanding they will have to take on and expertly train quite a few thousand pensioners in the art of impersonating dial up modems, i wonder i the money will be good for this kind of job, still i suppose it will be a good way to top up their pension. yes i know it is not real
