Hello people, I am in a pipe band at the moment in Argyll and I play the Scottish highland snare drum. I've always liked the look of the small pipes- how hard are they?? Is it easier than the bagpipes? How long has it took you? Any info wouldn't gratefully received!
@myfilms2010 they are definitely worth getting, great indoor instrument. it is just as difficult skill wise as the pipes but definitely less exausting. If you play the pipes as well I think it is a great investment, if you just play the drums i would advise just starting with the basics of practice chanter like with the pipes first, then moving to the small pipes.
@myfilms2010 it depends. by saying practice pipes do your mean a practice chanter? Usually for the pipes you start on a practice chanter for 6 months or more to really have a strong foundation of the basics then start on the highland pipes. for the small pipes i would say the same. Practice chanter for 6 months or so then move to the smallpipes. (continued in next comment)
Best to have strong foundation though so try not to breeze through the basics. A lot of pipers are ok but could be a lot better if they spent more time on the basics in the beginning
the first ones the kesh jig, obviously you cant play the whole second part, when the uilleann pipers play it it goes right to the top of the scale. sounds good on them though great set
@johnnyhorton2 The fingering is the same, but the sound holes are a lot smaller, making them considerably quieter. You can also get chanters in the key of D.
Dunottar Castle is quite easy to reach. Just walk along the path from the main road. There are some steep steps down & then back up again, so not wheelchair friendly. It's a wonderful place to visit. We were there with young musicians from all over the world, participating in an international choir festival in Aberdeen.

Sounds awesome!
I thought smallpipes were exclusively bellows-blown though.
I've never seen this configuration before. Is it only particular companies that manufacture them with blowpipes?
Metallicazack 1 year ago
@Metallicazack I think more companies are offering mouth blown small pipes, particular polypenco ones as a more affordable option.

These look like Gibson Kay-Lee's. Or Walsh.

Awesome job. Each pipe has it's own unique personality. I think the small pipes tend to be a little more cheerful. Thanks for the video.
