Europeans/whites are so ethnocentric. The themes Shakespeare used in his plays are universal.. revenge, betrayal. love, loyalty..And their expression through art cannot be credited to one particular group of people.. These themes have been used over over and over again in American Cinema. But no one says anything about hollywood copying shakespeare. OMG Imperialistic thinking carries the Curse of the Golden Flower.. Pay attention to the movie colonizing Europeans ,Greed,lust carries a curse..

Dude, the plot is obviously Hamlet. If you don't understand why people are saying that, then you are not very familiar with either this movie or Hamlet. "The prince puts on a play before the king and queen about a king being poisoned in his ear?" -- Is that a universal theme?

Zhang Ziyi is a very talented actress. I loved her in The Road Home. It's harder for others because they have to land a Hollywood part to become world famous.

btw, have you seen Painted Skin? It has an all-star cast of Vicki Zhao, Zhou Xun, Sun Li, Chen Kun, and Donnie Yen (and Jane Zhang as the theme song singer, just like in the Banquet). Absolutely beautiful movie without Zhang Ziyi.

This movie is "Hamlet," Chinese style. I watched it in the theater here in China, and about a quarter of the way through I was like, "wait, this story is very much like Hamlet!" Then, I realized that it was Hamlet, set in China. Zhang Ziyi is as good as ever, along with an all star cast (well, all stars in China). It is worth seeing. :)

Then past by there was a movie Crouching Tiger And Hidden Dragon together with Chou Fat and again with Mechelle Yeo (correct me if I am mistaken with thier Family name pls)which really at it's best. Awesom moves and the impact of the story is truly moving. Then there comes House Of The Flying Daggers she also showed up all her moves like it was never seen before chinesse action quality.

Loved the visuals! Just didn't like the narrarators silly over-the-top voice over though. I hate it when English studios take what is perhaps an almost serious story (despite the flying) and make it feel silly.
