  • I WISHED I GREW UP IN THIS ERA

  • I just can't believe what the puberty is hearing now, comparing to this.

  • So beautiful.

  • Patti Smith on a kids tv show? Man, the kids sure knew their stuff back then.

  • Ugh I have a crush on Patti Smith I hope she's a lesbian cause I think I am now :)

  • Thanks for posting...Patti rocks.....ALWAYS!

  • holy crap this is awful

  • Joe Brooks, wow that's the guy that killed himself rather than go to trial for raping a bunch of women.

  • Still sounds punk love it

  • I am reading a book called Easter Rising, which is an autobiography of an Irish Southie family and as the author talks about his introduction to the punk scene of the 70's, he mentioned seeing Patti singing You Light Up My Life on a children's show. That was just too surreal of an idea just to make up, so I had to search it out and sure enough, thanks to YouTube and Postingoldtapes, here it was for me to see. Amazing!

  • @naugyca I was contacted by a director who really wanted to use this in a movie, but was never able to get the rights.

  • God could these kids ask more generic questions? "where were you born?" "Where do you live?" Seriously?

  • the best rendition of this song I've ever heard. Finally sung in a believable way, not all shallow and trite.

  • Why didn't she sing "Because the Night"?

  • If any of you think this is a joke on the kids, Patti sang "You Light Up My Life" at the Uptown Theatre in 1980. She may not have the voice of Debbi Boone, but she's got one hundred times the soul.

  • Youtube is just an incredible place - Thank you for posting these wonderful things. Indeed I'm very happy now!

Do you happen to have a clip of Roger Hodgson on this show?

  • @comfrey11 Sorry, this was the only bit I recorded.

  • @postingoldtapes Thanks a lot for the answer! :o) Pity about Roger but so glad about this one with Patti.

  • Bizarre

  • I knew this whole thing by heart.... so clearly... thank you. kids these days are delaing with lady gagagagagag????

  • Have always been a fan of Ms. Smith - this is just the kind of thing that makes her so unique. The last thing one would expect from her, is to choose this song to cover - comes out of left field and smacks you in the head - wished she had recorded it with her band for release. I never could stomach the saccharine, string laden version by Debbie Boone - too creepy. In Patti's hands, this turns out to be a good listen. Now, I want to hear Marianne Faithful cover this one. That would be interesting

  • Never heard Patti before.....was really expecting something.....but it sounds like a cow with a blockage just north of it's ass....

  • R.I.P. Brooks... (or burn in Hell if indeed you raped women).

that being said Patti Fucking Rules!!!

  • these kids are lucky growing up on real music

  • "Another liberal rapist"? Not if its raping the environment. Mercy on his troubled soul.

  • Another liberal rapist dies? Good riddance. Thank god fir helium.

  • RIP Joe Brooks

  • She kicked it!!!

  • lucky kids!!! :D

  • w/all due respect to Patti Smith, but this would be like seeing GG Allin on The Muppets Show; AMAZING!

  • @frankkubb I haven't been able to find the tape, but I recorded the Plasmatics on Solid Gold.

  • @midwestconcertvideo Holy ****! ! Please (x 50) upload it :D

  • i love, therefore i am. ^^

  • I just heard about this from a friend today, and imagine my surprise when I typed in 'You Light Up My Life" and "Patti Smith" and this came up immediately...

  • Amo Patti Smith!

  • she messed up...but showed more emotion singing this than ten thousand Debbie Boone's

  • This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen. I remember this show growing up...they really had some strange guests like Kiss and The Captain and Tenille. I remember it like it was yesterday...It was a daring show that catered to "tweens"-a forerunner of all this Disney Channel stuff.

  • "Thanks Patti, and we'll be right back with Count Dracula and Adam Rich" Classic. lol

  • Pay attention Patti you let your so called freedom loss.

  • 30 people gave this a thumbs down?? Are they for real? Patti is a freak'n Icon!

  • I would be the happiast man if the children today would just know who Mick Jagger is!

  • the coolest human being ever

  • @AhYaOk Yes but she lost touch. We need to help her to put her feet back on the ground.

  • Awesome!

  • Patti Smith the unknown Ramone

  • Boy oh boy! Imagine if she were on American Idol, Simon would rip her a new one. "That has to be the worst rendition of that song I've ever heard"

  • @koletski21

rcvard loved your comments, koletski21 your loss if you can't see the beauty in this performance!

  • "Don't go away...we have Count Dracula and Adam Rich..." The roller coaster that was '70's TV!

  • @ kmaaka Me too!

  • Her voiced could have been trained but then we wouldn't have the raw beauty of such native talent that came from living rough and taking chances.

  • the weirdest part is that The guy playing the piano was charged with, i think rape, and convicted and his son just murdered his girlfriend in SOHO and will be spending the rest of his life prison, newsworthy video just now

  • @14jwh:

Stupid hater crap. Even if the guy at the piano did something wrong - what is that YOUR fuckin business ? You want to dismiss Patti and start ranting hypocrite bigotry here. Shame on you, silly !

What you aim at is that the whole world should have your problems with the world - mostly derived from tabloid press trash - as usual.

Look for a talk therapist and leave other people with your obsessed babbitt world in peace !

  • @MrSKINFLICK What in the world are u talking about?, what an over reaction, tha guy who wrote the song just killed himself before being sentenced for rape, that has nothing to do with Patti and is a simple and , in light of this video, ironic FACT. U should stick to German, u can't communicate in English very well.

  • patti reminds me to lorraine from madtv. and she rocks

  • She is too scary to look at ,but Google Joe Brooks, he's the guy that got into trouble trying to hustle girls on his rep as writer of this song, and his son is under arrest for murder at present.

  • @felliniesque200:You´d rather care about the crimes of the Reagan administration in the 80s:

Secret arms transfers to Iran+the money from this was used to finance the Nicaraguan right-wing extremist contras who laundered the money+then used it to finance coke smuggling into the USA -under the supervision of sinister CIA circles

    +all this in"God´s own country".

    Google Wikipedia:The Iran-Contra scandal(1985-1987).

Reagan after months of silence:"I knew nothing."

    Oliver North:"He knew everything."

  • thank you SO much

  • i fucking love her!

  • I feel like I just found a 10ct Diamond in 18krg with absolutely no flaws at all. Thats the feeling this post just gave me. Thats why we keep watching it over & over again. This isnt something that happens..like EVER!! I am so gonna feature this on my channel, but this is 1 of those vids that you never want to take down,ya know, but at some point,I'll have to. Thanks for the Gem!! wow!I was this age at this time.We looked "Brady"but we had great music. It was The Ramones & Stones n Patty 4 me.

  • This is 1 of the most unusual things I have ever seen in my entire life! My jaw just hit the floor.Im paralized! I cant move...lol This is freakin AWESOME!! Did I just see Patty smith sing "You light up my fuckin Life"?????My child hood "idols" are still freakin me out!!! You know it's funny when Patty can get ppl to admit they like a song that just wasnt cool to like in the 70's.ppl did but they wouldnt admit it,like dee dee liked to listen to Reba Mackintire.Patty dug Debbie Boone?Cool.

  • what song does she sing here? thanks

  • Never really liked that song but hearing this has changed everything.

That is now the definitive version of the song, for me anyway.

  • love her-then-now-love her-always makes me FEEL

  • @30Tmaria Her book "Just Kids" won the National Book Award.

  • Thanks for posting this!!!

  • She is strung out on a kids' show. lol

  • lovely

  • Joey Ramone never should have gone solo.

  • Did you know the gov is working to limit the right you have to take video in public. That you will need written permission of all parties in the video.

What we need to do is write, call, email, show up at any political town hall and ask for laws that allow us to continue to record in public with out permission that includes the cops, mayor, city councilors.

  • I used to love Kids are people too! My mother used to sing this song to me all the time. She died in 1979.......I loved how Patti performed this song.

  • I used to love Kids are people too! My mother used to sing this song to me all the time. She died in 1979.......I loved how she performed.

  • Q horrible canta!!! Es un insulto a esa cancion tan bella, mejor canta mi gato

  • @TheAbel00: Speak English.

  • fits perfect...the song was actually written by a witch for Lucifer...so sorry that this truth was never told until now...God Bless

  • @FOBmzunguREPTILICUS Wow, do you think someone might sing a song for God like that? FOBmzunguRETIL... ? Who gives a rip? The composer doesn't look like a witch! Lucifer was just an artist who got kicked out of heaven for being a little too free with his artistry--yeh the establishment can't handle too much freedom in the rock, punk, art world.

  • @gordsd ...Lucifer is the one that made u pay taxes!...lmao

  • @FOBmzunguREPTILICUS If I sang this song for the Lord he would know and wouldn't care who or what it was for.....take those lemons and make a lemonade

  • @shealave ...now why would u sing this song to the Lord who knows it wasnt written for Him?...the Lord likes ur songs better...Lucifer wants sooo much to be like God that he'll do ANYTHING to get God's church...EXPOSE SATAN

  • Right on Patti u lite up my life. Love my Easter lp. Be lost without it.

  • I now understand the expression, " a face that would stop a clock"!

  • @felliniesque2000 fuck the clock!

  • I think she really wanted to do the song. It is a very emotional song and she loved emotion. An iconoclast, she would laugh at all you people who disdain her choice and choose the song in your face. I think she felt it.

  • @summermusic67 Exactly! Thank you.

  • @summermusic67

I agree..she's singing from the heart...you can tell in her phrasing

even if she does seem to forget the words near the end..she recovers...

    great version..

  • This song sucked, and was completely overplayed everywhere; I wish that she sang the songs SHE's known for ('Gloria', 'Because The Night') instead of this.

  • @colorform69 : Both are great songs, better than this overplayed crap 'song' that stunk up the radio and the charts back in the day, and even inspired a stupid movie of the same name. Somebody higher up at ABC must have made her do this.

  • @Neville6000 patti could sing the barney theme song and it would sound awesome.

  • Thanks, I remember this. I wonder if (and hope that) some of those kids in the audience started their own rock and roll bands.

  • This is right around when she did Wave...

  • @ccipollini1984 Yes, sort of. This is the 80's (early 80's, my guess.) Aad wave came out 79. So, sort of the right time, just a couple of years after.

  • patti's one holy woman.

  • hi im glad its not just me i am going through 300 musictapes from 80,s that i made and cataloged all music shows i seem to have loads of stuff thats not up will try to find the time

  • This vid just blew my fucking mind. ROFLMAO.

  • This is way better than Shatner singing Rocket Man, but oddly the dichotomy is equal...

  • what an incredible performance. Heart felt and quite moving. Patti, you rock!

  • Like Lady Gaga's grandma.

  • oh em gee!

  • Wow....maybe one of the most surreal things I've ever seen. A group of kids asking Patti freaking Smith questions, she sings "You Light Up My Life" and then they trot out the song's composer to accompany her....just amazing. Patti Smiths humility and sincerity is a nice lesson for people who try and be cool. There's no one cooler that Patti Smith.

  • omg she is true queen !!! Once I heard her album and it does not impressed me...How happy i am , that i found her now!!!

  • Just effing cool.

  • i wonder if the kids were paid for this LOL ....... anyway I love her.

  • After finding this video way back on youtube...Just want to say

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you

    Amazing Patti : ) LisboaGirl

  • She thought the music in *1974* stunk?? Wow...I wonder what she thinks of it now? She's sadly prophetic @ 2:24...

  • @lcozzarelli I'm sure she still loves it...she always did what she wanted and knew what was right

  • Thanks for uploading this Postingoldtapes

  • I am so thankful I grew up in this period before everything became so corporate and correct. She said it right and sang it great. Thanks for the vid.

  • she's great :)

  • because she sings diff style..its a kid show lmfao

  • wow, that was a trip. she nailed it. count dracula was next.

  • Wow. I was only 21 then. Where'd the time go?

  • Patti, you light up my life :)

  • Passion.

  • Yeah, this is about the only version of this song I can stomach... but then, I lived through the incessant playing of this song in the 70's ... was the ear worm of the decade. lol But only Patti could give this song edge and passion

  • The fact that "American Idol" even exists proves her point about music belonging to "big business guys". She's obviously doing something right if she's a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Go choke on Simon Cowell's Teletubbie-producing cock.

  • @KlonopinSaves: Thing was, before there ever was Pop Idol, there was 'Ted Mack's Amateur Hour', 'Star Search', and a ton of other shows where people got up and sang or danced or did whatever. Not to defend Pop Idol, but to not mention that would be wrong.

  • Um, she blew the whole payoff at the end of the song.

  • Sorry guys, I know this brings back a lot of nostalgia and everything, but i gotta say it. She sucks. It's just that simple. If someone...anyone...tried to go into any singing competition sounding like that, they'd be laughed out of the building. Just saying...

  • @natestewiu its punk rock duh not american idol cookie cutter shit

  • @natestewiu: It's not that she sucks, per se, she dosen't; it's that this song doesn't fit her-PERIOD. I think that the producers forced her to sing this song instead of the ones that she's known for, because they were frightened about how the would sound to kids (which begs the question, 'Why did they invite her on this show?'

  • this is fucking funny

  • There are so many reasons I am watching this over and over again. Utterly surreal.

  • I found this interview more insightful than most hip hop artists can provide today!

  • @blewvelvet: Then you haven't heard any good hip hop artists talk in interviews yet. Try listening to Wesley 'Maestro Fresh Wes' Williams new album and read his book, or better yet have an open mind.

  • @Neville6000: The kids like her, don´t you see that. Moron.

  • @MrSKINFLICK : The kids may like her, but the song still sucks a load of fetid dingo's kidneys.

  • A great artist doing something unusual. She totally elevates the song.

  • i love this woman

  • WOW. I remember that show.

  • I love you Patti

  • this is brutally beautiful. she's a queen

  • I'll watch Patti Smith read the phone book. Thanks for this!

  • @KathrynColey Sorry! My finger twitched and

    I accidentally gave you a thumbs-down...

Nothing personal, I'm just twitchy and technologically challenged :(

  • I used to watch this show, but definitly don't remember this episode.. I only remember the theme of the show and the set design. hahah.. so crazy..thanks for upping this. Kids were people too..and not channelled all things Disney..YET...but some of course.

  • Thank you!! This is great!

  • OMG I remember watching this show waaayyyy back.

Has there ever been a squeakier clean tv host?

  • This is so cool.....memories. Thanks!

  • This is excellently surreal!

  • Way cool. Kids are People too was such a great show. I almost forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder.

  • WOW....That gave me goose bumps. Love ya Patti, but that was bizarre

  • 30+ yrs after i first heard her and patti can still surprise me....tyvm for posting this gem

  • Wonderful...so, the line up for that show was Patti Smith, Count Dracula, and Adam Rich. That's worth taking a moment to let sink in.

  • Kids Are People Too was awesome back in the day. I remember they had Cheap Trick on the show too. If they had a show like that for kids today, it would be all Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers. Blaargh

  • @jonp72: Who do you think that kids would listen to except them? They're kids, after all.

  • Thanks for sharing! It gives me joy!

  • this made my day. actually, it ended winter forever.

  • Love Kvitka Cisyk's version of the song. But I also think, Patti's interpretation is great, because she tries to sing it in her own style instead of just doing some mediocre cover version of the original.

  • Holy crap, this is AMAZING! A good way to start off 2010!

  • who did she say her favorite singer was maria collis? who is that

  • I think Its Maria Callas

  • It's Maria Callas, Hollypop.

One of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century. She combined an impressive bel canto technique with great dramatic gifts. And her influence is so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her, "Nearly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music's best-selling vocalists."

Tells you more about Patti Smith than you wanted to know, huh.

Now go and listen to Ms. Callas ... and learn.

  • WHAT is up with at audience? are they all child actors. How whould they even know who patti smith is?

  • I think they were told before, that how to react when patti smith will be on show.

  • @VJTOMYAZ: That's what I want to know!

  • @VJTOMYAZ that must be the dumbest comment i have read in a long time. cant you see this is filmed in the early 80s.

  • great clip, luv patti! i cracked up up when the host says to stick around we have count dracula and adam rich next, only in america.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • A song that has always made me be beg for the merciful release of death becomes magically transformed into a profoundly emotional work of art...yet another soaring testament to the might and raw genius of this inimitable living legend. Incredible.

  • Wow this is like surreal, and great. YLUML by Debbie Boone has long been a guilty pleasure of mine (I have a video of it favorited on YouTube, probably between like Agnostic Front and Dead Boys). Cool performance, Patti is always great.

  • Great video. Thanks for posting.

  • What a gem!

Thanks so much for uploading this.

  • absolutely agree. gorgeous!

  • The best by far. She sends chills up my spine when she sings.

  • no,she makes the song work for her.

  • Wow, I'm sorry, but come on... this isn't working for her voice...

  • stay punk forever

  • God, that incessant foot-waving.

  • ahhh I love this video so much!!

Patti is amazing! best version of that song ever. Hands down. Gives me chills every time.

    What an inspiration!

I love that she performed on this children's show, kids are rock n roll. Glad she understands that.

  • 6:17......Priceless!!

  • (-: (-: (-:

  • What an odd video. Kinda nice to see the singer of things like 'Piss Factory' being so open and friendly on a kid's show.
