Robot Carnival was the very first anime I ever saw. (Not including americanized stuff like transformers and speed racer) That was back when Sci-Fi channel used to show "Saturday anime". Robot Carnival, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Iria, Armitage, 8-man, Rojin Z, TONS of 80s classics. Geez, I was probably nine or ten, so that was seventeen years ago.
I can't believe I found this! For some reason I was thinking Robot Circus than out of nowhere came "Carnival" and "BAMM" here it is. This sequence is my favorite and I imagine the same for other fans of the film.
next time you try to watch some bullshit modern anime where they stand around talking spamming nonsense dialogue for 15-20 minutes at a time, remember DEPRIVE and remember what anime is really supposed to be about.
@knifeofspaghetti Well... yeah. That's the basic shonen plot in a nutshell. But this nerd is a robot for the whole segment, making it 18.6 times cooler.
Man I remember sneaking out of my room when I was a kid and watching this late at night on sci-fi channel and holy shit did it blow my mind. from that moment forward I can say that I've been watching anime. Honestly, I can understand that times change and so do the styles, but the 80's did something right with anime, its spirit is immortal.
I haven't seen this in years... it still Rocks!! The music that plays throughout is just as cool as the imagery... what i love about this Anime Short film apart from the obvious, ( the music and animation) is how many aspects of the era that the director brilliantly integrated into it...
It's 'High- Fashion' Its Operatic, Its Rocky Balboa, Its Metropolis, Its Mad Max... Its Romance, Its Testosterone, Its a MASTERPIECE...
I saw this when it first came out in the late 80's.I forced all the friends i could find to watch it. It inspired me to become an artist. I think it's the only anime i watched with my mom.
This is one of the greatest animated science fiction shorts EVER. There are many elements of humanity and idealized life. Robot Carnival blows away the overblown Akira.
Man, I wish this would get a DVD release. I remember catching it for the first time on TBS during an Animation Night they had. I have a bad tape recording of it still, I think. I don't even remember this segment though. I remember the one at the amusement park the best, I guess because the greatest appeal Anime holds for me is the extremely cutesy girls. Man, I'd love to date a cosplayer, but I'm sure I'm too old to find a single one by now.
Same here i was 12 18 years ago when i saw this on TBS with Heavy Metal, American Pop and Vampire Hunter D, this kicked ass and i own it on DVD-R. Do you think this is anime's Fantasia? Ryko, Sony or Shout Factory must release this on DVD or Blu-Ray. Speaking of anime, have you seen Nausicaa yet? and when you get back you should watch Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2 in subtitles, Wicked City and Ninja Scroll.
hey hey hey I grew up on this type of anime. Not only did have a morale behind it it had rockin animation to it and kickin musical track. Morale "fight for what you believe in" whether thats love, justice, whatever, just don't give up on what or who ya love or your dreams.
*Sighs* A classic 80's anime tale of how someone can go that extra mile for love, especially if that someone's a machine. This would make a great Valentine's Day vid for anime fans out there in a good way :3
You can see that this wasn't just ANY "done on a whim" anime. The backgrounds are painstakingly painted, the animation still smoother than our MODERN, etc.
neo tokyo, wicked city, go go, the fist , vamp hunter d, and this would all play at 1 or 2 in the am when i was like 7. still blows my mind away completely
The third movement (when he's fighting the robot in the bad guy's throne) is the single most epic anime song ever. To this day. The other parts aren't bad either, but that's simply the best.
at the 2.00 minute mark is one of the sickest scenes when he jumps off of his hover craft and the robot knocks his shades off thus revealing his face and he just keeps flying as if nothing happened, that was just sick.
All of the Robot Carnival shorts were masterpieces of anime, but this one stuck with me for 20 years for some reason. It's just so powerful, a potent little does of '80s rock and cyberpunk wrapped up in a neat little story.

This anime on Scifi saturday mornings!!! I loved it. Casshern Sins reminds me a lot of this anime, I wonder if there is inspiration from the creator of Casshern Sins
I wonder what it is about Japan...how there take on animation is so utterly different than the wests at large. Hell, even their sound effects fascinate me. I'd love to know what sort of cultural aesthetic is required to see and hear and feel the world in a way that lends itself to this sort of presentation.
Till then, I'm content with awe-filled appreciation for it.
They certainly don't make anime like they used to! All these long drawn out series they have today, and cookie cutter anime's - nothing like the old school stuff, which as a rule is all unique from one another.
@shincyriades Good times, man, good times. Ninja Scroll, Project A-ko, Akira (that used to creep me right the fuck out XD), Wicked City, Macross Plus, Macross 2, Robotech, Dominion Tank Police, Vampire Hunter D (1985). Those were the days. I remembered waking up early Saturday morning to tune into the SciFi Channel to see if there will be an anime movie. And I'm sure none of us ever did called them anime back then even in the 90s. It was just simply "Japanese Cartoon" or "Japan animation."
@DJVirgoNeun Yeah, I don't even remember calling it anime, myself, until like the mid 90s when Toonami was just starting up. Miyazaki's Nausicaa was my first anime back when I first saw the original (horrid) English dub on HBO, in 1985 or so I think it was. I didn't even know it was Japanese, or "anime", until years later when I started discovering stuff like Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, Guyver, etc. And all those that you mentioned - great stuff! And scifi did play a lot of good stuff!
For some reason today, I wanted to see if Robot Carnival was on You Tube. Indeed it is. When I was younger, I used to wonder why some of these skits were silent. Then I realize that sometimes you don't even need words to tell a complete story. Just good action, emotion. Oh, and kick ass tunes.
No matter what type of Creature you are on the outside, it's possible to Love and have Companionship with another Species. And if there is a Stronge enough Bond between the two they would Fight to Keep it.
@Exile618 I think some of the new stuff is good but I do agree that the 80's and 90's had the magic. I think it's in the "rustic" feel of cell animation or something.
@Exile618 I have to agree with you on that. While I really like FMA, Bleach, X'Amd, To Loveru, Naruto, and some others anime has gone stagnant somewhat. Nothing really capitivating these days like this or the likes of Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, Akira, Outlaw Star, Space Battleship Yamato, Macross, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Escaflowne, Ghost In The Shell, Appleseed, and the Gundam Sagas just to name a few.
This is one of the most badass cartoons ever! I always wondered what the story was with the green haired dude. Did he build the giant evil robots just to come to alien worlds and kidnap little girls? We'll never know I guess. Thanks for putting this one up.
Here's something interesting. he punches the dude with the right hand first and the opponents face goes the other way to his right... that must be a quick lightning left hand.
Cause when you get punched with the right hand your face goes the other way not against it... hehehehehehe...
Jeez, this is still my favorite bit of anime EVER. Period. The first bit of anime id ever seen was robot carnival, and this one blew me away, been watching anime since i was 13 and im 27 now, this one STILL blows me away.
it must be over 15 years since ive seen this. this one is my favorite from robot carnival. the music is great too. I also remember sci fi channel playing this show alot.
I'd also like to state that deprived is seven minutes of filtered down, pure, refined 80's anime awesomeness. It was always my favorite short in the bunch, when I was a kid.
Oh my god, I remember seeing this as a kid! Thanks man, it still looks as amazing as I remembered it. I recall trying to copy the art style for so long until finally giving up after a lot of frustration. Thanks a lot!
i am looking for this soundtrack. my uncle have this on vhs and he watches it every sunday, but he wont let me hold it. he says its worth alot and it has some type of meaning to him. can you help me?
Designed and written by Jideotoshi Ohmori;art direction by kenji matsumoto; special effects by Junichi Saski
"deprive" is in the quick-cut style of music videos. Handsome but cruel aliens conquer earth, and a robotic hero must battle a punk-rock invader and rescue the girl, the accompaniment of a heavy metal soundtrack.
Thanks for posting these, this was the first anime I ever saw, and it left a lasting impression on me. Just about everything I like about anime is contained in these shorts, melodrama, weird ambigous plot twists, and of course, giant robots.
I saw Robot Carnival and the Casshern OVA and noticed how they were similar. Since "Deprive" was sort of a tribute to that kind of anime it makes sense.
Old but cool 80s music, almost no dialogue, and various robots made this a great movie. "Deprive" was my second favorite of the segments after A Tale of Two Robots.
man, this stuff really makes me pine for the anime classics of the 80's, when everything was hand drawn, dark and edgy, full of pop music and genius design work.but most importantly, you could tell sweat and blood went into each product in the hope that lots would enjoy it. these days, computer animated junk makes its way to america in record time, and the only plot seems to be how strong you can get to beat the crap out of the other guy.
Saw this on Sci-Fi's Saturday Anime in the 90s when I was a wee lad. It's still good, but Youtube fucking hurts it. I'm glad people are getting a chance to see this (since it's so old), but it's too bad people can't see it in decent quality.
Thanks for uploading. And Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, and Gundam Seed are for wanks. Cheers.
Are you really telling me what I can and can't do?
I have seen many early anime series/movies that I've liked, especially these shorts. Their quality is outstanding, and they really are gems. HOWEVER, I prefer being open-minded rather than purely pretentious, so I can appreciate the entertainment value of Deathnote, but I also watch newer series aimed at more mature (perhaps pretentious) audiences such as Monster or Paranoia Agent.
You can have it both ways; I don't see what the problem is.
I don't understand you man; I mean how does Youtube hurts this showing of this particular classic for audiences who haven't seen it? Explain that to me.
-video quality sucks ass. This is actually a really good-looking "chapter" in Robot Carnival, but not when viewed like this.
-the quality of the sound is shit. A computer can't do much. And I had to max-out my PC volume just to get average TV volume.
-people who haven't gotten into anime since like 2005 (most people who watch garbage)won't realize it's Youtube's fault. They'll say "the problem is that this anime SUCKS. Now I'm gonna go watch episode 200 of Naruto!1 ^_^"
You are ridiculous buddy. If people watching it can't appreciate it for stupid reasons like that, they're either idiots for not realizing that youtube reduces quality, or they're just not into the old school stuff. In my opinion, people are LUCKY that someone uploaded this on here so they can now be exposed to something classic that they haven't seen.
this might be the most 80s thing I've ever seen

Still, poke around the net a bit and you should be able to find it. :)

Robot carnival kinda reminds me watching disneys fantasa but with robots in it this time.
GokuSSJ0679 3 years ago 3
Oh, and it says
Deprive
Designed and written by Jideotoshi Ohmori;art direction by kenji matsumoto; special effects by Junichi Saski
"deprive" is in the quick-cut style of music videos. Handsome but cruel aliens conquer earth, and a robotic hero must battle a punk-rock invader and rescue the girl, the accompaniment of a heavy metal soundtrack.

SO I randomly got a bunch of Robot Carnival Cards. A box of them actually.
I would like to know what exactly is Robot carnival.
And the Cards say on the bottom 1990 not 1980 ^-^

Thanks for posting these, this was the first anime I ever saw, and it left a lasting impression on me. Just about everything I like about anime is contained in these shorts, melodrama, weird ambigous plot twists, and of course, giant robots.

2:40 "hey thanks for burning my other clothes off. i look cooler in this outfit anyways" robot carnival is awesome!!

I saw Robot Carnival and the Casshern OVA and noticed how they were similar. Since "Deprive" was sort of a tribute to that kind of anime it makes sense.
Old but cool 80s music, almost no dialogue, and various robots made this a great movie. "Deprive" was my second favorite of the segments after A Tale of Two Robots.

the music starting at 1:48 is soo bad ass it's what I remembered when I was a kid

This is cool as crap. All the shorts in Robot Carnival are great, I need to find more classy anime like this.
therealkraas 3 years ago 2
man, this stuff really makes me pine for the anime classics of the 80's, when everything was hand drawn, dark and edgy, full of pop music and genius design work.but most importantly, you could tell sweat and blood went into each product in the hope that lots would enjoy it. these days, computer animated junk makes its way to america in record time, and the only plot seems to be how strong you can get to beat the crap out of the other guy.
gungraveod1 3 years ago 4
yeah, totally dont screw with a super powered androids girlfriend
ffVIIfanboy 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure the moral of this story is... Don't mess with a super-powered robot's main love interest!
MasterAsra 3 years ago 5
I still have this on VHS along with lensmen Project A-ko and the rest of the anime movies.
GokuSSJ0679 4 years ago
ok, so...
Laser blast through the chest and stomach doesn't hurt a robot.
But a right cross and a one-two into the wall causes disintegration.
Only in anime does this make sense. lol

They should re-release robot carnival on DVD.

NO!!!!!
Every time there is a re-release they redo the voices with amateur actors and it's not as good
i10azns 4 years ago
Saw this on Sci-Fi's Saturday Anime in the 90s when I was a wee lad. It's still good, but Youtube fucking hurts it. I'm glad people are getting a chance to see this (since it's so old), but it's too bad people can't see it in decent quality.
Thanks for uploading. And Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, and Gundam Seed are for wanks. Cheers.
HeroYui84 4 years ago 2
I can't like this AND death note? What's the problem? I like music from the 60s and music now.....
gregkrazanski 4 years ago
No. You can't.
Deprive = a footnote in the science-fiction slash non-verbal display of Japanese animation without any BS.
Death Note = sadistic schoolboy's wetdream with nothing BUT BS, written for young boys.
HeroYui84 4 years ago
Are you really telling me what I can and can't do?
I have seen many early anime series/movies that I've liked, especially these shorts. Their quality is outstanding, and they really are gems. HOWEVER, I prefer being open-minded rather than purely pretentious, so I can appreciate the entertainment value of Deathnote, but I also watch newer series aimed at more mature (perhaps pretentious) audiences such as Monster or Paranoia Agent.
You can have it both ways; I don't see what the problem is.
gregkrazanski 4 years ago 3
I don't understand you man; I mean how does Youtube hurts this showing of this particular classic for audiences who haven't seen it? Explain that to me.
Rodimus78 4 years ago 2
Well gee, lemme see:
-video quality sucks ass. This is actually a really good-looking "chapter" in Robot Carnival, but not when viewed like this.
-the quality of the sound is shit. A computer can't do much. And I had to max-out my PC volume just to get average TV volume.
-people who haven't gotten into anime since like 2005 (most people who watch garbage)won't realize it's Youtube's fault. They'll say "the problem is that this anime SUCKS. Now I'm gonna go watch episode 200 of Naruto!1 ^_^"
HeroYui84 4 years ago
You are ridiculous buddy. If people watching it can't appreciate it for stupid reasons like that, they're either idiots for not realizing that youtube reduces quality, or they're just not into the old school stuff. In my opinion, people are LUCKY that someone uploaded this on here so they can now be exposed to something classic that they haven't seen.
gregkrazanski 4 years ago
Although, people can always download a good quality version of it from torrents on tokyotosho.
einhorn303 4 years ago
Last i saw this was over 15 years ago i never thought i'd see it again. Thanks for this.

Don't even get me started on anime that plays on like Adult Swim and shit. First anime I purchased was Robotech Macross Saga.
nanerpants 4 years ago
Ya, most modern anime is garbage. It makes me sick. Anyone that knows anything about anime has seen 80's and early 90's anime.
It appears to be out on dvd so I'm not sure where everyone is getting the impression that it is not.
nanerpants 4 years ago
you know i thought i was alone comrade.
i grew up with US Renditions animes like
Dangiaoh, guyver,Nadia,Orguss and i was able to see it all go to Manga Entertainment.
I still remember saving my money when i was 12 to buy Animeigo's Bubblgum crisis ovas.
I'm 27 now and just about to become a manga artist at Tokuma shoten and i happened to come here to watch this. Anime now needs to take a lesson
Well just the crappy ones that make it to American tv.
