  • 86 years...wow, and I'm 39 and keeping the same philosophy of Mr. Bradbury, I second your way of living.

  • @AreteGriego91 Realized that this was posted in 2006. He's in his 90's now.

  • What profound words...

  • I need to meet this man before I die.

  • He is so inspirational!

  • "You're supposed to be having fun.... You're supposed to be living your life."

Ray Bradbury shows here how writing comes from total engagement with life -- living with gratitude and from the heart.

It's easy to see that he "loves the act of being alive" -- so his writing is awake and alive and passionate and totally zesty.

No wonder words flow so beautifully for him -- his writing comes from feeling, not from empty thinking. Great advice for writing and for life.

  • Brilliant, absolutely. Love you Mr. Bradbury.

  • he's right.

  • Yikes. Bradbury has more and more resemblance to the Big Lebowski. In word and visage.

  • Genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Learn how to find writing jobs here: hubpages(dot)com/hub/findwritingjobs

  • I'm not much of a write so I just use a website called STORYJOIN It works for me.

  • good advice...until you read writing by people who take that advice. it's one thing to live that way...and another thing to write that way.

  • He is a giant, a pope, one of the most amusing and genuine writers you can find. And, listening to this,he must be a great human being. Anything you read from him is big. My total admiration, Mr Bradbury!

  • Matmethod: This is Mr. Ray Bradbury, one of the most influential science fiction authors of the 20th century. He has written such works as "Farenheit 451" "The Martian Chronicles" and "Dandelion Wine". I would recommend reading these, as they subtley reflect ob what he says here.

  • Who is this man, I stumbled across him while I was watching a video on advice for writing by Kurt Vonnegut. Someone please fill me in because I really enjoyed what he said.

  • HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW OMG!!!! Bradbury is a legend!!!

  • There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,

    And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

...And Spring herself when she woke at dawn

Would scarcely know that we were gone.

  • There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,

    And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

...And Spring herself when she woke at dawn

Would scarcely know that we were gone. A poem by Sara Teasdale

in the collection "The Martian Chronicles"

Here is my favourite Bradbury's story

  • what an inspiration +fav

  • His book "Zen in the art of Writing" has more good advice on one page than the whole of "Writing down the bones" by Natalie Goldberg. She's a fraud and a hack. Bradbury was a genius.

  • genius ..... just that... God bless him.

  • The first 50-some seconds of this are priceless and stand alone. I was so privileged to have met the man in 1996.

  • We are here to appreciate the act of being alive -- this man has so got it! Thank you

  • @craniocean,

What he said there really stood out for me as well, such great words!

  • Funny... we should all be so fortunate... M.G.

  • ray bradbury ftw

  • Bless him! Read "The Million Year Picnic" when I was about 12 and the ending scared me so much I didn't read anything by Bradbury for about another 20 years!! After which I became a Bradbury devotee.

  • He wonders why he's lived so-long .i think it's because he loves what he does and because he IS loved and adored by so-many people .

  • @WonderWomandc naw or else kerouac would have lived

  • The Illustrated Man is my favorite so far...but theres so many more i have yet to read

  • this man changed my life

  • Great man

  • Just finished reading Fahrenheit 451... great book!! real good read.

  • i pictured him as a skinny man. lol.

  • love2bsweet ~

Bradbury once was skinny. But years go by and things change. This year, 2009, Bradbury will be 89 years old!

Still gets out and speaks before crowds, signs books, and continues to produce stage plays around his writings.

I have an alternate YOUTUBE website with many Bradbury videos. Latest is from the closing of his play last month, of Fahrenheit 451.

End of this month, January, 2009, his new play opens, The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit. Check out:

    RayBradburyChannel on YOUTUBE.

  • I love this guy!! His writings and interviews reflect a wonderful human being, I hope to share his point of view when I am 86.... only 60 years for me to go!!

  • I read a short his short story I´ll Never Forget You in the Reader´s digest. It was so beautiful. I still kept a clipping of it, now yellowish and crispy. Is he still alive?

  • Yes he's definitely still alive. Ackerman not so much.

  • Awesome body of work . . . .

Still enjoy rereading many of his works.

  • netcinema- I am sorry if I said anything offensive. Its just that Ray Bradbury reminds me of an English professor who I had that really supported my writing. But there are some good woman professors out there, I meant to say.

  • I say...male writers/professors are the best teachers. Not female professor's because woman favor too much and not only that they are not stern enough.

  • geekgirl310 ~ Can't agree with you on the woman teacher not being stern enough. I had 8 years of brutal Dominican Roman Catholic nuns for teachers. Beaten hand with rulers, ears pulled out of their proper roots, faces slapped, heads slapped, in order for us to pay attention to the lessons being taught. In that case, I think I finally learned the fundamentals of diagramming sentences. I think I did. But my ears are still ringing.

  • Female teachers are often bitches. If they like, they like you, if they hate you, they hate you. I had a female teacher who liked me and I liked her back of course.

  • @geekgirl310 Women not stern enough? You haven't met my wife.

  • Американцы отжыгают уже который раз.

    Тупые ублюдки не победят Россию.

Мы сожрем ваш мозг, мы ктулху, мы есть великий правитель.

  • Is there a Russian to English translator in the house?

    Thanks for posting, however. TeMhblu!!

  • @TeMhbIu

Fuck off. Go mastrubate to Putin.

  • @TeMhbIu Ignorant Commie.

  • aww what an inspiration he is

  • Legend.

  • This man is utterly brilliant. F-451, written more than 50 years ago predicts our current world perfectly.

  • Freecell5671 ~ Note what Bradbury says about his book, Fahrenheit 451 nowadays: he strongly suggests it's NOT about censorship per se. But about how certain books are destroyed when they bother the reader personally. Things the books say to each reader, tho differently, may inflict a certain trouble to the soul and mind. Such a book must be burned. Bradbury suggests 'F451' never has to do with across the board freedom to write anything. But how each reader personally responds to what he reads.

  • One short story, one poem, two essays, plus a critic of the LA political system in one week? The man had obviously burned out.

  • the wonderful death of dudly stone ,my favourite short story

  • Wow. Thank you for posting this.

About 2 years ago, I sent a bday card with a simple note written on the inside cover. I put stamps on it & put it in another SASE addressed to the publisher of one of his books. I enclosed a SASE with the card & said that I'd included the SASE out of good etiquette. I did get a reply - a signed piece of stationery in the sase I'd sent. Something I'll treasure always.

His bday is 8/22/1920 - tell him what he means to you while he's still here.

    Just a thought.

  • The bit about being slef concious in your writing really hits home with me. Very inspiring.

  • Amazing man, brilliant writer, but he doesn`t know the word "humble"

  • Wow... very inspiring!

  • I love Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451 is the novel that set me on a life-long course of reading and writing.

  • then you obviously haven't read one of his novels.

  • Ray Bradbury is my favorite writer. He is a beautiful writer and human being. His stuff isn't the heaviest stuff out there but it's heavier than your average Stephen King novel (No offence to King; he's good.). He writes about so many beautiful things. He is full of life. My favorite quote is from him "the best writer touch life often, the mediocre ones brush a hand over her, and the bad ones rape her and leave her for the flies."...Well, put and I live by that motto in writing.

  • I want to read some of Ray Bradbury, where should I start?

  • Farenheit 451...Martian Chronicles...The Illustrated Man...Something Wicked This Way Comes...But Farenheit is probably my favorite book of all time...Just so beautiful...I was thoroughly engaged throughout it...

  • Something Wicked this Way Comes!!!!

  • Kaleidoscope. I love it!

  • i met him and he is the nicest guy ever!!! i was doing irish dance and he thought i was great!! he gave me a $20 tip and his son was there with his girlfriend!!!

  • laffitaffi995: You're so lucky, it's my dream to meet Ray!

(only he doesn't have a son, but 4 daughters, musta been someone else)

  • volandvasoliono~Obviously your views are not shared by millions of others. Even the President of Mexico loves his writing. He is the most popular American writer in Russia. His Mexican stories rank high in the classic stories of the 20th century. In 2007 Bradbury won the esteemed Pulitzer Prize. What have you done, volandvasoliono, worth talking about?

  • yeah you tell him!

  • I pity you and your feeble mind, this is one of the greatest writers of our time and if you dont know you moron, Ray Bradbury doesn't exactly like technology to begin with, so dont be saying anyone who disses computers cna go to hell without actualy knowing what you are talking about stupid puto

  • Anyone who disses Ray Bradbury can go to hell. If you didn't like Fahrenheit 451, it's probably because your insignificant mind couldn't comprehend it. By the way, your computer probably SUCKS.

  • Wow! i read some of his books and there were great! my favorite out of all is Farenheit 451.

  • Incredible! I saw him face to face at the san diego comic con in 2007. MAN it was an incredible thrill!

  • i hate children. why so many children in his stories?

  • The man is an American Original.

  • His speech is certainly better than Man Illustrated

  • he's so brilliant. so. brillaint.

  • That's damn right, Ray.

  • Ray... YOU SEXY BASTARD!

  • lol

  • genius.

  • Years ago I saw him in St.Louis, I was pretty illiterate basically, so the poignancy of his presence was lost on me. I have since read books and am grateful I got to meet the guy. As he was heading towards the elevator, he placed his hand on my shoulder and said "Take care," in his way, you know how he does. It was awesome.

  • Ray Bradbury? Who needs atomic wars, burning books, and trips to Mars when you can find a Cat in the Hat.

  • Bradbury's my God and Zen and the Art of Writing is my Bible *laughs*. Ray is the man.

  • a great speaker.

  • Excellent writer, inspiration at its finest!!!!!

  • he says what 'I have no time for you if you're going to be so" dark, self conscience, gosh

  • Ray Bradbury is the Lord of literature. The saint of science-fiction. The father of fantasy. A professional of personification.

  • <3 ~ You speak the truth.

  • We all know that Bradbury's fiction is the zenith. Check out his 1972 (?) Zen and the Art of Writing.

  • I really need to read more of Bradbury.

  • My favorite author, too (since '79)! But "Don't ruin your life with thinking", well... can't help...

  • My first attempt at writing a Sci-Fi short was purchased because of this man's inspiration over me.

  • There's a lot of corrupt, stupid obstacles to love these days Ray. The young up and commers have inherited a world you couldn't begin to describe fifty years ago. Nonetheless, great advice from a venerable man.

  • his story kaleidoscope, made me love him

  • The man is magic.

  • He's a wizard, the very best sort.

  • Ray Bradbury is my favorite author too! His stories are so beautiful and simple. So many spectacular short stories and essays about the wonder of the little things! Fantastic stuff.

I was lucky enough to see him speak at U of I in 1998, but I didn't actually get to meet him... *sob* ... I really wish I had. I so very much wanted to give him a hug.... He really is something special. You will never be forgotten Mr. Bradbury! Never.

  • i got more out of this than a whole hour at sunday mass!

  • I love Ray Bradbury. Thank you for the videos.

  • My favorite author. I have a signed copy of something wicked this way comes which is my favorite book.

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • he is a very good and beautiful writer

  • It would be such an honor to meet him. ^^

  • Man, this guy's awsome!
