I think its just opinion. If you like thin necks with more of a precise sound, go for a strat or tele. If you like thicker necks with a thicker, harder sound, go for a good les paul from the custom shop. Les Paul stay in tune better, but they arent as precise for solo’s and such.
@PBANDSNOW LP's don't stay in tune better unless you upgrade the shitty "Gibson Deluxe" stock tuners. And any strat that you upgrade with locking tuners will stay in tune as good or better!!
Gibson and Fender are both icons as far as the electric guitars are concern however Gibson needs to take some notes from Fender quality wise and price wise now days Fender are way ahead in their game . Somebody needs to resurrect Gibson, some one who truly love guitars not a busyness puppet that cares only about numbers and profit .
iI saw some real crap builds on Pauls in the early '70s.... terrible crap; made me look to other cheaper guitars, finally to some real cheapies that got doctoring, fret dressing, better p/us (or repotting). Learnt alot about myths.
I did have 58 345 (mint) with a neck I loved, but it was taken from my house in The Grove way back when. $20 grand today? paid $450 in the early/mid 70's.
It's a little amusing when I see him with the Oxblood Les Paul. In a recent interview in one of the popular Guitar mags, he is quoted as calling the Les Paul a 'sissy' guitar. It was not used on the entire Blow by Blow album, in fact "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" was recorded using a Tele fitted with humbuckers he borrowed from Eric and subsequently swapped his beloved Esquire for. Thanks Gibson for building me a tribute 'sissy' guitar, lol. Gratitude.
Someone offers you 50 or a 100 grand to talk about their product you used to use, you'd do it in a second. Even though you don't play it now. Make it while you can. Cash in. JB still a great axeman, no matter what.
@HcWeaner Let me get this straight. You called him an idiot for saying Fender all the way? When was the last time you saw anything but a Fender is Jeff Beck's hands?
@SuperFenderfan best guitar player´s in the world play with at fender in his hands, sooner or later bonamassa will play a fender guitar and he´ll sound a 100% better than now.
the worst of all is the fact that a serious percentage of them isn't even well made.
I have an explorer and the selector switch isn't very reliable, the tuning isn't stable at all en the playability is ok, but at a pricepoint of approx 2000 $ I'd expect butter
Got to hang out with JB a few times backstage as he loved the Champagne that I would bring him (Clicquot) Totally cool and down to earth guy...Easy to talk to once you stopped shitting your pants thinking "Holy Fuck! I'm standing here talking to Jeff Beck" Good times!
I play without a pick just like Jeff does. Please watch my band if you're bored. any comments would be appreciated. The best song is "speak my heart". The other one is a foxey lady cover, and the other original---- well my singing kind of ruins it. heh eh he
@CtrlRm He said something similar in a Guitar Center interview about Les Pauls in particular. And you can find him talking much more rhapsodically about his Esquire and his Strat, which he plays more than anything else. Still, he did some great work on an LP. Could be that Beck is a little ornery? :-)
@CtrlRm what a piss-take...Gibsons are sissy guitars NOW but then they were the dog's bollocks...I dont think I ever own one but I saw/tried a seventies 335 once fuck fuck fuck, how can I get that guitar ?
the reason for that is because spending 300 dollars back then was like spending 2000 dollars today. and also the most prized Gibson are the ones from the late 50s
and early 60s after that Gibson guitars drop in value the 50 and 60s Les Paul are the most rarest of any year of the Les Paul so yea there kinda worth it.
@slashnduffrock if you know of the value of an instrument and try to sell one for what it seems worth, you'll have a hard time finding a buyer. Often you have to knock the price down a bit cos' only the shoppes can sell for thousands. You go to a shop with a original LES PAUL and the first thing the assistant says to you: aaaaah you've taken the trem out it's worthless...i'll give you a few 100 for it ! Rip Off
Why doesn't he tell the interviewer what he told Guitar Player magazine June 2010, " Les Pauls are sissy guitars" I,ve spent years defending him but no more, he really is Nigel Tufnel !!!
I think he switched to a Stratocaster because of the tricks you can do with it. The only reason I will play a strat really is if I want sort of a "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" kind of sound. (My favorite song.) You can mess with volume and bending, etc. If I am playing jazz or jazz fusion though, an ES-335 or a Les Paul though are my personal choices.
Also, Jeff Beck played a Gibson alot during his early years and some during the fusion years. (I would love to know what he played Rough and Ready.)
Yeah, agreed, the bending is easier on a slick neck and with a whammy -bar....and a lot of practice. A lifelong load of practice. An electric guitar is just a plank with a pick-up. Any idiot knows that. An idiot that can play a bit knows a bit more......I've had top-end Fenders and Gibsons and my axe of choice is an Epi Sg. alot of people own standard fenders like bog standard fenders from used shops well i do anyway. but yeah the kids who get the custom shop guitars and custom hand made instruments and amplifiers are just spolied. if you work your way up in the music world youve got something to look forward too like these custom instruments and rare gibsons and fenders
i dunno if ur 14 as i am. i have a faded flying v and marshall valvestate 102r. ive played for 5 years almost 6. and if its ur passion i think u deserve a good instrument. my dad was a musican and knows the tone it takes. but i started off with an ion guitar, then a squier affinity, then an epiphone to my faded v. and i cherish my v as if it were another part of me
I think you don't. You start with an epiphone and a peavey and work your way up from there. My first electrics were these crap strat and Les Paul copies made by Hondo...
How do teenagers get expensive guitars... Back in the late 60's and very early 70's I used to go to music stores that back then sold used instruments. You could get a "real" Telecaster for $200 used. A Gibson Les Paul black custom was in a mall (yes a mall) for $550. You could get a used SG for under$400. Like an idiot I used the $500 I saved by cutting lawns for 2 years to buy a stupid B&W TV instead of a Gibson. Its not like today where a Les Paul used is $1700.
Gibson created the demand and bloated their own prices to make people want the guitar more. Great idea if you can keep the quality of the product high.
Yeah, if i could go back in time i'd bring 1000 bucks and buy a few les pauls. Then i would come back and be rich. It's sad how bably we are being screwed buy companies like gibson.
i reckon people rip themselves off... i paid like about 400 pounds for a 60's classic player strat and i prefer to my prs which was 1500! u get nice mother of pearl inlays for the extra grand but thats about it!

tbh his child hood seemed similar to mine...and probably similar to every guitar player's. i spent my early teenage years dreaming of what guitar to buy
its fantastic being a musician. well as far as enjoying your music, it doesnt matter what guitar u use. well it does and it doesnt. different gear can do different things. and theres all sorts of different sounds out there. but its hard to find one guitar that will do everything you want
What do you mean the type of guitar doesn't matter? Of course it does! Obviously you need to be a masterful player like Jeff to make a guitar sing but you also need the right guitar to do certain things.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There is another guy who can make a guitar sing like a human voice..or an animal...or another instrument, like tuba, cello, violin, trumpet, flute etc....even moreso than Jeff does.(I Love Jeff's guitar work by the way!)....and that other guy is BRIAN MAY from Queen.
you guys are funny, jeff beck couldnt do all the things he does now on a les paul or telecaster, he needs tremolo and master volume on the strat. and prs makes better guitars than gibson now for slightly less money. there i said it
Very smart of you to say only "gibson guitars" there few diffrent types of gibson guitars uknow? and prs uses very diffrent kinds of necks than gibson so for somebody gibson maybe better.. Plus im pretty damn sure that often these guys who only says "gibson sucks" have tried les paul studio or standard.. well try a proper historic or custom,, that should change something. Gibsons are overpriced though I agree. All of them
fair enough, but i was just saying in terms of quality and tone. i have played some very nice gibsons in my day but they just seem to be resting on their laurels and making wierd new version of classics like the flying V and explorer
It would be nice to see Jeff perform with the Les Paul again even if it's just for one show. It's exciting and relieving to watch him play anything else other than a Strat nowadays.
Maybe my friend because some people do collect guitars and never play them, thats not the case with me Ive been Ive been playing guitar for 36 years professionally, you can check out my band CENTRIFUGE 9.0 link at my space address is on my channel from there youll find my bands link on my top friends.. Rock On \m/
I own 4 Gibsons and though they are my favorite guitars I also play an Ibanez Iceman and a BC Rich Warlock, and I totally love old Fender Strats and Telecasters.
You know I have been a fan of Jeffs for over 30 years and it really doesnt matter what brand guitar that man plays, its him thats kicking ass not the guitar. I dont think that Jeff got his props for finger tapping that EVH got and EVH copied most of his tricks from Jeff.. Who is a true Guitar GOD not a Drunk with an attatude that is distroying his life.....
hellin69: I think it matters quite a bit which guitar Jeff is playing. He's much more limited on a Paul and has to actually play instead of relying on the tremelo bar. He can do amazing things with a Strat, I agree. But, I'd love to hear another album with him using a Paul exclusively. He'd really have to dig down deep and grab from the bottom. It's in him, and it would be music to my and many other guitar player's ears. I think I go throw Truth on \\m//
No problem with that at all - I use to have a blond 1970 Tele that Aex was my baby until some prick ripped it off, my friend in fact Im about to buy a Fender Custom Shop Vintage Spec 1969 Stratocaster NOS, Ive always favored the 70s Strats and Telecasters. HELLIN
That was a tribute guitar...not a production run guitar. His sig guitar is a strat and goes for ~3K for a custom shop model and 1500 for a production model.
I think its just opinion. If you like thin necks with more of a precise sound, go for a strat or tele. If you like thicker necks with a thicker, harder sound, go for a good les paul from the custom shop. Les Paul stay in tune better, but they arent as precise for solo’s and such.

you guys are funny, jeff beck couldnt do all the things he does now on a les paul or telecaster, he needs tremolo and master volume on the strat. and prs makes better guitars than gibson now for slightly less money. there i said it
yourfriendphinex 2 years ago 3
Very smart of you to say only "gibson guitars" there few diffrent types of gibson guitars uknow? and prs uses very diffrent kinds of necks than gibson so for somebody gibson maybe better.. Plus im pretty damn sure that often these guys who only says "gibson sucks" have tried les paul studio or standard.. well try a proper historic or custom,, that should change something. Gibsons are overpriced though I agree. All of them
Mystiik 2 years ago
fair enough, but i was just saying in terms of quality and tone. i have played some very nice gibsons in my day but they just seem to be resting on their laurels and making wierd new version of classics like the flying V and explorer
yourfriendphinex 2 years ago
well I agree that those new models are pretty stupid.. And the les paul with whammy o.O

It would be nice to see Jeff perform with the Les Paul again even if it's just for one show. It's exciting and relieving to watch him play anything else other than a Strat nowadays.

Im sure he gets sick of playing a strat all the time..the les paul is a tone machine

So's the strat............

Thanks for posting. I've been looking for interviews of Jeff Beck and they are few and far between. Good stuff!

Couldn't Gibson have done a better job on capturing the audio here?

larry3393 3 years ago 4
I suppose if you want to spend a fortune. You could buy a much cheaper guitar and work on your technique instead. ;)

I own 4 Gibsons and though they are my favorite guitars I also play an Ibanez Iceman and a BC Rich Warlock, and I totally love old Fender Strats and Telecasters.
hellin69 3 years ago
I used to think Gibson is best until I hear from Jeff Beck sound.
He's tone of god.

I think I go throw Truth on \\m//
aroxon 3 years ago
You're right, it's in him.
I would like to hear him do some of the squealies on a Les Paul instead of a strat.
Perhaps Tom Morello style, I've been working on that a bit myself, trying to imitate his whammy bar feel with a pedal. It's fun. ;)

i used to play a gibson usa les paul but then i picked up a american standard tele and that was it. haven't touched a les paul since.
TAK808 3 years ago
I used to be the Les Paul king. Then I too picked up an American Strat. BUT...I love 'em both!
need4zpeed 3 years ago
No problem with that at all - I use to have a blond 1970 Tele that Aex was my baby until some prick ripped it off, my friend in fact Im about to buy a Fender Custom Shop Vintage Spec 1969 Stratocaster NOS, Ive always favored the 70s Strats and Telecasters. HELLIN

why do I have some feeling you spend more time buying and talking about them than playing them? -.-

Yeah, he does have a signature fender.
ktxdgqtx 3 years ago
He started on Fender. His Signature Tele is $10k
birdmankustomz666 3 years ago
That was a tribute guitar...not a production run guitar. His sig guitar is a strat and goes for ~3K for a custom shop model and 1500 for a production model.
