Stupid audience, clapping hands, as if it was some freak show piruettes in a circus, you must never do that...but well...it was a wonderful performance.-he's my favourite
Baryshnikov o Nureyev ? Non saprei ! Non ho la competenza per giudicare(nè lo vorrei) chi dei due è il più grande, per me strabiliano entrambi.Credo che se di preferenza si può parlare, è solo in relazione al gusto personalissimo di ciascuno di noi.
I love Nureyev's dancing sooo much. I wish I could've seen him when he was alive. And Nureyev is more artistic and he has more of a flare than Baryshnikov, they're different types of dancers. I like what litsa Style said.
I knew of him through the theater and my dear friend who introduced us....He was so magnificent in person, beyond any desription other than a man touched BY GOD...It was sheer perfection...I always trembeled as I talked with him, actually became ill after a rather long conversation about my workouts, one time...in the 70's... back then...Stomach in Knots from nerves.....So HAndsome!!!!
Rudolph was Charming ,charismatic, poise, carefree, A master at his art .A leader of his own destiny in his career made him unique. ahead of his time ...loved by everyone...
great Actor ...Dancer... creative fashion icon and his love for music as a music conductor and also teaching ballet... Your memory will live on forever. Thanks for this video
Hi. This is a wonderful video. Thanks so much for posting it. I would like to cite it in a research paper. Can you tell me where you located the video? Or, perhaps, just some basic information about the performance: when it aired, what station, what program, etc.? I would be very grateful. Thanks again for posting!
He was absolutely sublime. He had what Longinus called "the grace beyond the reach of art." I was lucky enough to see him on stage in New York. Oh, my God, it was a night to remember.
@kangadillo ah, perhaps we were there together <: I saw him & fonteyn in 'romeo & juliet' & 'swan lake' in NY in '69. I've never been the same since - once she began i couldn't stop crying, lol.
This video is wonderful - what culture shock he must have been in, the courage it took him to break with everything he'd been trained to do and be...
I remember seeing him at the Hollywood Bowl, probably his Bowl debut. The "girls" had been dancing a while, then all of a sudden he came flying from behind the curtain stage right, clear to the center of the stage it seemed. He was already airborne when you first saw his pointed foot. Have you ever heard 18,000 gasp all at once??? It's an amazing sound. Sold out that night. It was soooo thrilling. I've never been able to figure out how he could fly so far so high.
@esquibelle He wasnt mean, he didnt suffer fools and incompetence. The nitwits in American media gave him that reputation because the American media has *no* talent and they dont know what to do with it when they see it.
I appreciate and certainly understand the enthusiasm, but how I wish this audience hadn't applauded DURING the performance, as if they were in a circus.
@Caligulalia, I bet that was part of why he stumbles and grimaces so much, thinking "What the heck did I do coming here and leaving my country where people were at least cultured enough to wait until the end of a piece to applaud?"
I know what you mean. I attributed the grimace to a painful landing -- an attempt at stoicism, but I also see the mixed emotions. While he hated the authoritarian and limiting regime he escaped, he was also heartbroken at having to leave his family, culture, and mentors like Pushkin. He loved the over-the-top praise he got in the West but accepted it with flared nostrils and undisguised contempt. What a character. Love him.
Actually the first piece was fantastic as well. If he was capable of this sort of dancing why did he not display his true skill more often?..He did loose control and just sort od shlumo to the floor at the end of the 2nd piece though. SIGH!!!
Thanks for the share flybreath - My mum loved him and Dame Margot Fontaine, two of the Greats. I am a big fan of Darcy Bussell myself. I always think of Ballet as being a cross between Dance and Sport - they are such amazing athletes, so well trained and disciplined and yet so elegant.
I just finished reading the Kavanaugh bio. My first ballet was seeing him in Sleeping Beauty. I fell in love with him and ballet from that moment on. Thank you for the film. I miss him very much.
Agreed! He was extraordinary - his mind was as much for music and mime as it was for movement and his poetry was his passion spent. Never forgotten.....
Yes! Even beyond extraordinary - Nureyev didn't dance - he was dance. His spirit, the heart he brought to his work is breathtaking. Against all odds and at great personal cost. You are right, there will never be another like him. Truly unforgettable.
@LitsaStyle Baryshnikov was different. I'd say he was a better technician.....but I prefer Nureyev. I don't think it's a question of who was better really. Blessings!
Though there were many greats before him,(Youskevitch,Bruhn,Eglevsky) it was Rudy who put the male dancer on the map, now and forever.Bow when you hear his name.Great post JK314.
his dancing is so lyrical and so musical, I do not think there is anyone dancing like him these days, but if anyone can tell me who can I would be grateful.
Yes, I was thinking of your, fairylilac, when I posted this :)
So glad you like it. Even though I can tell he's very nervous, he was still such a new and thrilling experience for the audience - they loved him!
Because the film comes out blurry, you can't really see his expression - more of a grimace than a smile - at the end of Gayne. It's actually cute, like a little boy who isn't sure he ended up in the right position or not. Imagine the pressure he was under!
rudi, i wish i'd seen you in the nudi.
