The one bad part for Sam Mendes is that since this was his feature film debut, there was nowhere to go but down. Not that his other films haven't been good, but not critically acclaimed like American Beauty was.
sure Sam Mendes has a great job in american beauty but I think somebody deserves more than him,and of course he is David Fincher! it's not really important who won oscar,Fincher,Nolan,Tarantino didn't win as a director,if they are not good at movie making i seriously know nothing about movies.
Finally. Finally! A director who, upon receiving the most sought-after directorial prize in the world, doesn't forget to thank his composer for the music he or she wrote. Many, if not all, movies wouldn't have been as great as they are without their music.
I just realized 3 of those Directors just made their 1st film and were under 35 years old. Mendes and Shyamalan have sort of crashed, but Jonze is going storng still
@eniben4 Are you kidding? Mendes made 'Road to Perdition,' 'Jarhead,' 'Revolutionary Road,' and is slated to direct the twenty-third Bond movie among other films. He's still definitely going strong critically and commercially. Jonze, aside from music videos, made two other films after 'Being John Malkovich:' 'Adaptation' and 'Where the Wild Things Are.' Mendes is clearly still going much stronger than Jonze.
I wonder how it would look like if M Night Shyamalan won the Oscar, would his other films like Lady In the Water and the Last Airbender be great then??
Mendes deserved this award. I also think that Anthony Minghella should have been nominated for The Talented Mr. Ripley and Frank Darabont should have been nominated for The Green Mile.
could we please, PLEASE! have more videos of the many great directors winning oscars. A big shout out for either of Milos Forman's oscar wins and Bertolucci and Demme (as annoying as i heard it is). But big thanks for this i really wanted to see Mendes' oscar win
Mendes' direction was elegant and sharp, but this award should have been handed to Spike Jones for the masterpiece he turned out in BJM. His direction went above and beyond and delved deep into a imaginative relam -- that was still grounded in reality.
@trixxgordon No, it was after directing Unbreakable that he started going "coco in his head". Unbreakable was the greatest superhero movie of all time.
@trixxgordon That's a bit harsh. Just because he hasn't done something oscar worthy like The Sixth Sense doesn't mean he's lost his mind. I don't see him blowing up Hospitals or something. He's actually a cool guy.
That satchel-mouthed woman behind Mendes acts as though this was the biggest surprise since the Virgin Birth.
