In all my years I've never heard 'old man river' sung with such feeling. Sammy's talent brought this song 'alive' for me. Mr. Davis must be 'singing' in heaven to a packed audience.
Nt sure what year this was done, but the number he is opened with is, "Choreography" from the movie "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.
SAMMY DAVIS JR! Sammy was known years ago as "The World's Greatest Entertainer." He was!! This great man could sing beautifully, dance with grace and polish,
he was a Broadway Theater Actor! I saw him perform in a Broadway show called "Golden Boy." Here Sammy shows us just how great he was! Amazing tap dancing plus great singing! May God Bless Sammy Davis JR!
After seeing such a display of talent... come on!! do we have to accept that ALL we've got left today is Bieber and MTV??? Poor signs of our times...!!
WOW! I'm really glad that the audience applauded like they did even though the act was not over. And loved that cheer at the end of the act. I would have been doing more than that. I would be jumping up and down screaming like a fangirl.
And it just tears me up that even that long ago the majority of audience there is white :')
I miss that little talented man, he was funny, he had a great voice and he sure could dance, I didn't realize how much I missed him, they don't make talent like that any more.......Old Man River gives me goose pimples.....
With the same token isn't disappointing to her bad news about someone who has the same first or last name as you. What about if the person has the same first and last name as you - and they're on the news for killing someone? Oprah Winfrey did a show like the that. The guest said their lives were changed by it. My brothers name is Samuel (we call him Sammy or Sam) last name Davis. I started this discussion earlier for those who missed the last post.
Dear Gangsta547, from my elderly musician mother (who tries to use the web but can't quite get the hang of it yet!) & myself - we both thank you so much for uploading this video. It brought back so many memories for my mother. And for me, to hear & see this just cements the fact that this is superb entertainment, absolute showmanship that is unsurpassed. Brilliance which this world has not seen for a long, long time. XO
Q: Did he literally make his cigarette vanish into thin air, or did he toss it off stage at 1:51? He had it in his hand, then all of a sudden it wasn't there.
i saw him in Milan Palatrussardi-year 1988 about. a show with Frank Sinatra & Liza Minelli formidable....in this video ...I HATE THIS DAMNED CIGARETTE.......
Oh my fucking God that performance of old man river has to be one of the best performances I have ever SEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!! fabuloso!! bravissimia!!! oh dear I'm crying already...
Mr Davis Jr. is so beautiful; charming, funny, genius talent - so powerful. Him singing Ol’ Man River is enough to make the hardest person cry. His sentiment is so current. I’m so glad I know about this classy Gent.
Sammie Davis is on my list of the Baddest Motherfuckers to ever exist. There are certain people who when they enter a room, just reek coolness, and Sammie Davis Jr was without a doubt one of them.
This guy was so much fun to watch. If he had a talent other than for performing, it was his ability to tolerate SHIT from people, especially the other "rats" in the Rat Pack.
In this video we see him tap dance, which shows his great dancing skills. But then there is a real treat! Sammy soulfully sings "Old Man River" with all the pain and feeling that the lyrics convey! This was a performance of true greatness! I am touched by it!
God bless you Sammy Davis!! The World misses you!!
No Argument. Everyone knows it! No contest with Sinatra.
I am a fan of both of these greats! Sammy could do it all - singing, dancing, impersonating! Frank was a great singer of ballads, of love lost, love found, and unrequited love. That was his greateness!! No need to compare these two greats!
Each was great in his own right, but as far as a "complete entertainer," Sammy Davis rightly can be called by that name. God Bless both of these greats!
This man was really multi-talented, a rare species then, more so today. Had he been a white dude, he probably would had attained the status of Mr Sinatra, or perhaps even exceeded him.
@GinoongJojo If you truly believe that Sinatra was a better performer than Sammy Davis, I don't think you are considering the depth of talent of each man. Sinatra was a good singer but lost his voice later in life and had only his sense of tempo to sustain his popularity. Sammy had everything--singing, dancing, acting. He was able to maintain a very high level despite failing health and advancing age. I believe Davis was far superior to Sinatra, and in all ways a better entertainer.

Sammy Davis, Jr. Sammy reputedly could do "the trick": extend his hand, put a glass on top of it, pull back his hand, draw, fire, and shatter the glass before it hit the ground. He was ranked third or fourth nationally in quick draw competition, which was the rage in the late 1950’s. As he used to say, "It only takes one good eye to shoot."

Some people say singers are no good until they have experience. I give it a different name. Everyone has to earn the right to do certain things - singing being a very good example. There are a few people with more of a right to sing The Ole Man River than Sammy.
I love Sammy Davis Jr and this song made me cry and as i watch this video i thought he did a lot he sings, dances, he was in the war and he did impressions and i was thinking someone should try and do a impression of him dont try and sing that song like him because you cant only he can sing a song like that and make it mean something to at lease one person.

Mr. Davis was a unique human being not only because of his prolic talent but that he rose above much adversity, blind in one eye, Black at a time of extreme Jim Crowism & racism born into extreme poverty, had his life threatened (until Frank Sinatra - who truly loved Sammy lke a brother- stepped in and put a stop to it), because he married a Swedsh beauty, blonde May Britt, YET was wildly succesful and beloved by all - Black and White alike! Guess what else about Sammy - he was Republican!
If only there were more people with as much heart as Sammy had, we would be much further ahead in treating everyone equal ! Thanks for the post Gangsta!
Sammy Davis appeared on the Phil Donahue show some time in the late 80's. Great interview --There was a very touching exchange he had with an elderly woman inthe audience who had been a chorus dancer many years before. He had hip surgery not long before that, but he invited her on stage to dance. Does anyone have that to post?
Yes I think it would be most humorous! But then again it would possibly be too painful to watch! Mr Davis is such a rare breed! There isn't enough X Factor non-entities on the planet to fill the void he left behind. I figure we'll have to wait for the Universe to collapse then re-expand again and hopefully a human being will somehow arise on a planet somewhere who may possibly fill that void. What I am saying basically is that it might take a while!
with a cig in his mouth?!? WOW what a champ all those movie stars back then like john wayne how did they do that stuff while smoking?!? when i smoked i had NO endurance!
Such wonderful memories from my youth in front of tube... Sammy helped break the color line for me when I asked my extended family and neighbors why the Negroes lived across the viaducts on the Southside of --& then attended a 95% black urban high school in the 60's to meet smarter folks than I. They helped me to learn about more racism and a colorless, multi-templed God and so much truth from all my southside neighbors regardless of origin or religion.

Yes, Mr Davis' performance is so beautiful! He had such a depth of beauty inside and it was revealed when he sang! Wonderful!

Outstanding! I'd like to see an X factor reject do that

@voodoochilled1

@marcusgael Well I'll wait in vain, but won't hold my breath!

It took a lot of courage for Sammy Davis Jr. to sing Ole Man River back then in front of that audience.
