Wow! I saw J&D with PPDRR at Disneyland in 1979 and Brian Wilson came out and played Barbara Ann on bass dressed in a robe! It was a great moment for me, but most in the audience didn't realize it.
@spraymalathionjerry I never had a brain injury but I was born with 2 differant disabilities so YES Jan iwas and is one of the inspiteing people God sent my way. I love him before and after the car accident. When you have a disavility iit takes a LOT not to crawl in a conner and give up or worse not try. Jan beat the odds in so many ways even with limitations you CAN reach goals and and however big or small have victory. May he be with God and the angels. Rock on Dean. RIP Jan.
@LadyKatherine1960 He was a great performer. I saw them in concert many times. It was amazing how a large number of people were dancing in their wheelchairs to the music! I had never seen anything like that before and it was fantastic. In spite of his injuries, he put on an awesome show and people appreciated it.
It is great to see the old Papa band on You Tube. I followed Papa Doo through the Disney years. I was 16 yrs old when I met everyone, lets just say I am a baby boomer. The last time I saw the band was at the Valencia Town Center in Valencia, CA during the summer concert program. My husband really enjoyed the show, he laughed at me because got so in to it again. Thanks for all the memories.
Thanks for your reply, I'm looking forward to seeing some of Jan in action, post-crash. I remember seeing him a long time ago on Sha Na Na's show. The crap I used to watch in the 70's!!!
Poor Jan... I was looking for a vid that had some of him performing after his crash... I noticed he really wasn't doing much here aside from bumping into people, not even singing... really sad that one of the best minds in producing was reduced to that.
Actually, Jan did more than you see in this video. This particular song features Papa Doo Run Run. I'll try to put one up featuring Jan. 15 years after his accident, Jan still had good days and bad, but he was always there, would never give up, and always gave it everything he had. You won't find many artists today with that kind of courage and strength. - Don Z - PDRR
@papadoorunrun As a person born with disability Jan is one of 6 people who truly inspired / inspires me. He was amazeing BEFORE then accident and just as amazeing after. Not everyone who is born healthy and THEN gets disabled has the determanation, strenght, and guts to do thier very best with thier limitations. And he did get to where he could sing and walk on stage, he showed THEM. You dont have to be PERFACT to do your very very best . And that s more then good enough. RIP my sweet Jan.
@papadoorunrun Donnie, you'd know; you worked along side him for so long. I am sure you were witness to all the ups and downs. I think I saw this lineup around the era of this shooting. (Alameda County Fair) My lack of maturity at that time caused me to look at Jan as just a distraction on stage. I would later come to appreciate what you have written above.
Saw you boys (PDRR) January in Modesto. Still luv ya as much as the first time in high school in '76!
Watching this is bittersweet for me. These were the best times of my life. Nothing has compared to being young and hangin out with the boys in the band. Good times!!!!
@papadoorunrun, I met Jan Berry (R.I.P.) in traffic school back in the 1980's, and after he learned I worked in a recording studio, he asked me to lunch. He was having a "good day" that day, and we talked about the daily workout he had to do (with his dad's help) to keep his mind limber enough to remember lyrics. The crash had left him with a tremendous amount of irreversible paralysis; but, it was clear he was blessed with fortitude.
@papadoorunrun, p.s. It was quite bittersweet to learn that he was in traffic school for speeding. Despite his near fatal accident, he never lost his "need for speed." But, as he put it when our (former CHP) instructor asked about it after class, the accident didn't stop him from wanting to live each day of his life to the fullest. It was (and is) something to think about ...
@narcovice, as i posted to @papadoorunrun, even that near-fatal crash didn't cause jan to slow down. he loved music and living life to the fullest. so, my guess would be that, if he had had an opportunity it to do all over again, jan would fight the draft board once again.
I would suggest that you get the movie "Deadman's Curve" and watch it. Jan was partially paralyzed and had brain damage from a car accident in 1966. It took him nearly a decade to partially recover and return to the stage. He was an inspiration to all who saw him, and I am proud to have been on the same stage with him. - Don Z. Papa Doo.
Thanks for remembering. I remember that gig at the Cocky Bull. Interesting gig - small club - gigantic sound system. Armstrong and Ward left the band in 1980 after our final J&D tour. They both stayed with J&D for a couple of years then went their seperate ways. Armstrong has a duo today in OC called Vertikals, Ward has his own appraisal co and sometimes plays with Dean. We're all still really good friends.
Hey there, we are all showing our age. You played at my HS back in 1977...Pinole Valley High. Found you in our year book tonight. We also had Y&T and Journey play during that time. Later Greenday played there...that's where they went to high school. My dad was in the music biz and that's how we were able to book everyone.
@pfgbrian, On that age thing, I'm right there with you. Papa Doo Run Run played at one of our high school dances in 1974, but it was the year our high school opened and our yearbook staff did not get a picture of the band (just the people dancing). However, PDRR was such a hit, that we wanted them back ASAP. Unfortunately, based on a note I had written in my 1975 yearbook (which I pulled out for a friend's 50th birthday last month), "Papa Doo Run Run" was not available for our next dance! ; )
What a blast to stumble across this video! I first found you guys in December of '79, new years eve. This video brings back such fun memories of following you from place to place for years after that. I live near Santa Cruz and always intend to drive over the hill to see you. I gotta do it next year! Thanks for all the fun times guys!
Don Z...there was a group "Daddy-O" that opened for you guys a couple times in and around the South Bay.....with all the dates you guys play you may not even remember them...but they were pretty good and I wondered what became of them...oh and...is your latest CD from Santa Cruz ever gonna mmake Amazon ot iTunes? Wow thanks for posting this Don. I was a Disneyland regular back in the late 70's and mid 80's and hung around with all the locals at the space stage , tomorrowland terrace, plaza gardens and even videopolis when it first opened. Good times those were.
Sorry about that, Don. My fault. I woke up in the middle of the night and remembered the name of the band, the Belaire Bandits. Sorry for the confusion.
But I still hope it gets released on cd soon...lol. :)
"One Summer Night Live" was a 2 record set that was sold in the early 80's. According to the liner notes, it was recorded at some place in New York called "My Father's Place". It was originally issued by Rhino Records.
Hope that helps. It shows up on Borders store inventory check as being out of print...but it's referring to the vinyl LP.
Oh yeah - I know the one you're talking about. Papa Doo parted with J & D at the end of our 1980 tour. That record was made with their new band (Bel Air Bandits?) in 1981 or 82. I don't know more than that, cuz Papa isn't on it! - Don z.
Is the album, "One Summer Night Live" EVER going to be coming out on CD? I have that on the 2-disc vinyl LP and would REALLY like to get a new copy on CD. Any possibility of that happening?
And thanks for sharing the vids with us. They go a long way to keeping J&D alive in our memories! :)

I'll post a picture or two when I get the chance and I figure out how to do it! :)

Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They had many hits, fans and helped to create sounds that were legendary.
J&D and the Beach Boys created the California surf sound that helped to define the 1960's.
I shake my head at some of the acts already in the Hall.
Many did not do half of what Jan & Dean did.
