The Taiji community have not hunted dolphins for centuries, this is a recent phenomenon encouraged by the government. The Government blames the dolphins for the drop in fish populations when it is in fact humans causing the depletion. They think if they can eradicate the dolphins it will make up for the drop in commercial fishing because they will get the dolphin's share.
Is it also "none of our business" when Japanese people purchase meat that is labeled as fish or some other type of whale, but in fact is dolphin meat with dangerously high levels of mercury, or when schoolchildren are forced to eat this poisonous meat in their school lunches? I just completed work overseas in Japan, and between the events in Taji with the treehuggers, and the situation with the military bases in Okinawa, the Japanese are getting upset with their culture being disrespected. These issues are being discussed in many newspapers and on many japanese news stations/radio stations.

They are considered pests because they compete with the Japanese fishing industry. The Taiji community have not hunted dolphins for centuries, this is a recent phenomenon encouraged by the government. The Government blames the dolphins for the drop in fish populations when it is in fact humans causing the depletion. They think if they can eradicate the dolphins it will make up for the drop in commercial fishing because they will get the dolphin's share.

Japanese have a word, "nakimushi" that means crybaby. They're very good at it. I've lived in Japan for 20 years and worked with thousands of people here, so I may know a thing or two... The Japanese authorities and media used the threat of foreign imperialism to justify starting WWII, and they use the same tactics and excuses today. Nationalism here is very strong. Only two years ago the right-wing party lost it's grip after half a century. The same guys who deny Japanese war atrocities control the media here and don't tell the people here the truth.

The Japanese establishment used the threat of Western Imperialism as an excuse to invade China, Indochina, Singapore, Korea and attack Australia, Pearl Harbor and Alaska. They used the cultural excuse to justify predatory pricing and destroying other countries' economic bases while their markets remained closed. Now the Chinese are doing it to the Japanese and it's ironic to see them complain like other countries used to do about them. I hear this daily.

@PropagandaBuster Your premise is flawed. They ARE in the Faroe Islands. The Faroese killed over 600 Pilot "whales" (dolphins, actually,) this summer. But there are observers and people doing direct intervention there as well.
We don't care WHAT race someone is, if they're killing our marine cousins, we're opposed -- strongly. If the Japanese or Faroese started killing pygmy tribes in S.America or Africa, it'd be the same thing, but there'd be more up in arms over it.

Firstly, they ARE going extinct. In fact, there is a town on the Western side of Japan that has dolphin hunted for thousands of years and they're suddenly out of dolphins. They managed for 9,000 years because of sustainability. There are more people killing more animals (not just dolphins) on this planet than the planet can feasibly sustain.
The dolphin you pictured as the 'Baji' is an Atlantic Spotted Dolphin. The baji (or Yanzte River Dolphin) are already functionally extinct.
