  • Was at this show. The crowd was abuzz because a few nights before they played this song for the first time 14 or 15 years. The crowd went nuts...the screaming and cheering is not so clear on the video.

  • they played it 4 days earlier in Hampton, Va. That was the breakout not this one.

  • phil songs are the best, welcome to the phil zone!!!!!!

  • ITS ALL A DREAM WE DRE.E.E.AMED ONE AFTERNOON.........LOOONG AGOoOoO!!!

  • why's jerry hiding the skilzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • @dfleonard The Grateful Dead readily admitted that they had off nights and off songs. This organic, not always polished sound, was one component that made them so freaking awesome.

  • @dfleonard herion...

  • smile smile smile

  • To jest coś co w swojej pracy magisterskiej próbowałem wytłumaczyć i jakoś uziemić. Ani mi się to nie udało , ani nikomu innemu kto by próbował ogarnąć zjawisko. Święty zespół....

  • PHIL is so awesome and I love when he sings this song! It makes me tear up and smile at the same time! SMILE SMILE SMILE =)

  • great recording. have no idea how you managed to hold the thing straight for the entire song. i would have been dancing my but off

  • WoW! These were the days, every concert was different, was like the ultimate jam session!

  • whos got the best trip story from any Grateful Dead shows? from 1967 to 95 whoever you are, im interested to know, if you got any cool recollections from droppin out at GD shows? im sure there are billions of you lucky buggers who got to experience that.

  • One of my many favorites. Found cool Dead stuff on a hysterical website called noveltyjoes. Check it out if you want to crack up.

  • There ain't NOTHIN' like a Grateful Dead show !!!

  • Was at hampton right before this show where they broke it out. Crowd drowned out the band. Still get goosebumps listening to the show.

  • "Phil, DONT sing!" :)

  • I followed the dead from '69 til Jerry's death... I miss my youth!

  • OCD??? Fuhrer??? Fuck you three people... selfish bastards...

  • American Beauty was the first CD I ever owned. Box of Rain is a classic.

  • Hey hidden, the Dead are alive and well and touring as Further...I miss Jerry as much as anyone, but his spirit and Love is still there w/ Bobby, Phil, and the fellas...

  • GO!!!!!!! Phil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i don't love this version. the sound is just ok. phil sings so seldom and so good, but this has too much backround sound, although you can still hear how great he is

  • that crowd brings me back.....only saw a handful of shows all in hampton and they were everything they were said to be.........stood up close one time and saw all of terrapin stone sober it was tiiiight. Jerry really was the leader

  • such crap sound...but when I heard the crowd really get into singing along, it raised the hair on the back of my neck.

It happens at 3:50-ish, but you can't cheat :) Now that's not a thing you get to hear in a SB mix :) Yow!

  • to the @craigsmith guys comment.....what does hallucinating and marijuana have to do with anything you don't hallucinate on marijuana......and if you EVER mention lady fucking gaga and The Grateful Dead in the same breathe again I hope your mom bitch slaps you !!

  • Phil sounds great here. Wish the quality was better. The crowd obviously loves it. Very slick, gotta love a box of rain.

  • There was nothing like going to a Grateful Dead concert!

  • no i co niby zrozumiałeś? bo ja o Nich napisałem pracę magisterską i dalej nie wiem na czym polega ten fenomen tylko bezmyślnie z pasją oddaję się modłom do Nich....

  • nangawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawawain the mean time

  • 大好きな歌

    My favorite song

  • @craismith A U serious what you don't know about the dead would fill a book. That is ok though. it is NOT ok to compare that stupid twat "lady" Gaga to the grateful dead. The dead were almost like a religion or supernatural exerpence I never cared for the dead too much until that cold rainy night in March of 1991 when I got my first Merical "free ticket" once inside the show I heard what they said and they stole the face right off my head.

  • @corn3rston3 dude what you said could make me cry. You perfectly summed it up. Very nice, thank you for being such a wise, genuine music lover, and understanding what music is really supposed to be and supposed to do for a person's soul.

  • I just stumbled onto this. I was at this show and close to this angle. I didn't see it, though, because I was crying so hard the tears were bouncing off my glasses. I cannot imagine being so high on the opportunity to hear Phil sing this song.

  • All time favorite Dead tune! Everytime I have felt REALLY down in my life, I have sung this to myself and feel right as rain.

  • WAS I THERE ???

  • The Gods!!

  • I remember this show. a bunch of us climbed up the wall and snuck in through a 2nd story window...tour was the only part of the 80s worth remembering.

  • Sing one, Phil!

  • Omg,,, i was actually at this show. My only East Coast Shows.

  • i got goosebumps. Not from the song - I usually prefer to listen to an LP or an mp3 than listen to a live recording - but from the LOVE in the crowd. Oh man, I wish I was alive to see these guys play live.

  • @Hiddenattacker i never saw jerry either, but go see Furthur, it's lots of fun

  • @Hiddenattacker The Grateful Dead Were really never Studio Guys, They Played Live every other night. i Mean it was F*kcing awsome

  • Love the Dead!

  • I was there!

  • I was standing above and behind the stage. There was a pause and it looked as though they were not sure what they wanted to play. So I yelled out "Box of Rain!" real loud --(you can barely hear it in this but I think I can) ---and then Phil talks 'em into it. Phil turned around and looked right at me when I yelled it. I wish this clip started earlier. Does anybody have a continuous feed of the show?

  • @TheMeepzort

and then you woke up...lol. just kidding. rock on garth

  • @TheMeepzort serious? good story no matter, it's visualized swell!

  • This is favorite dead song too...and I love the way eveyrone is cheering.

  • Great moment. Right before the song Bobby said "we want to make practicemakes perfect."

  • gREAT SONG LIVE

  • Gives me goose bumps. So glad I caught the Warlocks shows at Hampton. :)

  • yes, thank you.

  • I can remember this beautiful moment like it was yesterday. The crowd cheer when Phil sings, "A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you thru..." still brings a tear to my eye.

  • A FKN MAZING

  • Good crowd...Phil must have been on cloud nine!!!

  • the greatest show on earth bigger than the circus

  • Comment removed

  • @blackriverbridge i was refering to the cicus coinrd the title as the greatest show on earth, the dead were larger than life more people seen the dead than outher act in show buisness

  • you know, i find it very amusing that some people would comment on videos and talk shit..

if you hate the band then don't watch it. WHY the hell would you take your time to search for a video and blab on about how stupid their music is? instead why don't you take this time to do something useful you assholes.

  • The dead always loved that building.

  • hey larry go drink your pork soda and watch some more midget wrestling me and grandpa are busy.

  • These vocals are seriously off key. Kind of like your logic. Stay the hell away from the garage and leave grandpa alone.

  • I was there in philly .. fun times ..

  • Who are these 'deadheads' who actaully followed this third rate act around? It's like listening to your grandfather and his beer drinking buddies in the garage? It's horrible. No class at all.

  • @xvoy2002 People smarter, classier and kinder than you. If you were born in 2002. you have an excuse for being such an asshat as eight years is not enough time to become mature.

  • @WillInNewHaven Thank you for your comment. You just proved my point.

You obviously like this style of "music" and used the term "asshat" in the same sentence. Exactly what I was pointing out. People like you make it so easy.

  • @xvoy2002 Ok you don't like them we get it. But do really have to be mean to the fans?

  • this song should have been recorded on the voyager and sent into deep space - it's one of the best songs ever written by humans

  • MY BIRTHDAY YEA!!!!THANKS PHIL

  • nothing like a phil box of rain.....it used to ignite the crowd......

  • i loved this show. what a force of nature

  • this is my second favorite. my favorite will always be truckin'

  • pot? who needs pot when you have a great band like this. lol

With or without pot the dead are great musicians. You have to understand these guys are old farts in this video, and live performances are rather GREat, or shitty .lol

  • @Productionzzzzz

    Works for me. Thanks.

The chick was worth waiting for too, eh.

  • 1)

I have a question for fans of the Dead. What do they think of this track?

Le Orme - Fine di un viaggio.mp4

    /watch?v=uXKQgc1ViLc

In 1978, the major Italian prog rock band Le Orme, the Floyd of Italy, went totally acoustic and produced an album. I got this record as a birthday present in 1979, and have loved it since. It's called End of a Journey.

    Good, bad, indifferent?

  • There are a lot of people like myself, half a century old, never knew anybody who liked the Dead, never understood the whole Deadhead phenomenon.

But, truly, the crowd is going apeshit. No doubt about that.

Why am I suddenly watching videos of the Dead now, decades later?

I happened to see the final episode of the "Freaks and Geeks" TV show.

  • @manzanadecoco

Q: What does a Grateful Dead fan say when he runs out of pot?

    A: This band sucks...

  • @ChengManChing

I've never been fond of Truckin' and that was what you would hear by them 80% of the time. But I'm keeping an open mind. I now like Ripple, and I first heard that one just recently.

Ok, they're no Fairport or Steeleye, but after 40 years I figure I can now come to some accommodation with them.

  • @manzanadecoco

Actually, I like the Dead, especially this song and several others like St. Stephen, Uncle John's Band and Sugar Magnolia...

O Yeah...saw them live in various altered states in the 1970's with my old, old friends. And so it goes...

  • @ChengManChing dude, the dead is amazing man, so let me give you a lil q&a

q:What do narrow minded people go on youtube and do?

A: Dis good music trying to act cool

Open and expand your mind man,and be more execpting

  • @ripbarrett72

Dude, I'm nothing if not excepting... Go in peace...

  • @ChengManChing you sir are a dick have a nice day

  • @ChengManChing That is the most lamest and unoriginal joke around. Only retards with no creativity that have to recyle garbage say that. Open your little stupid mind or come up with something original idiot.

  • Philly audiences must be pretty good...those guys are going apeshit! awesome.

  • @kensho3 dudeee philly rocks the shit out of every venue they're in

  • Saw them the following week at the Hampton Coliseum (late March 1986) where they played for three nights. My friend and I were blown away at the crowd and how good the band sounded. I feel fortunate to have seen them on this tour...definitely a concert I'll never forget. The Hampton Coliseum was also one of the great concert arenas back in the day!

  • I never liked the Dead, till I went to a concert. Then I understood.

  • @butchieman hahaha i know, thats exactly how my dad was, then my mom talked him into it and he fell in love, i love em but never saw jerry, well i did but I was like 6 and I dont remember it so doesnt count for shit.

  • @butchieman: word.

  • The greatest band in the greatest concert venue ever.

  • its sad to think the best music on earth has already been made. a quick listen to any station playing new music will confirm that.

  • Yeah, because the Dead, Pink Floyd and other such greats got sooo much radio time....

    yeah, right.

  • wish i was there... tooo young though i was born right after he died

  • I was 6 when this happened...looks like a good time. Theres nothing like a grateful dead concert..

  • They used to sell bumper stickers a Dead Concerts in the '70s that said: "There's nothing more boring than a Grateful Dead Concert"...had one on my VW bus for years...

  • happy birthday bob weir

  • Love it.

    The Dead lives on.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • give Phil some credit here+

  • Trips......

  • Philllllllllllllllll

  • They played this at Highgate, VT in '95. My one and only GD show. I'll remember it forever.

  • I'm glad that you had a chance to see the band as you're probably young and this was your opportunity.

Highgate 94 was so much fun. It should've been so as well in '95, but was a complete disaster with the gate crashers, the idiots inside the venue cheering them on, and in all honesty it was a foretelling of the very end of the trip that was.

Glad that you at least had an opportunity to see them at least once.

  • Awesome, one of my favorite songs ever. Via netflix you should get the last disk of "Freaks and Geeks", the very last show of the series features this song in a touching way. Ideally, watch the whole series to build up to it, it is worth it!

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • ya, freaks and geeks!! my favorite show, too bad it only lasted one season

if you want to watch ALL of the episodes, and not have to deal with the hastle of youtube and wmg, go to this site my friends and it will blow your mind

  • amazing response for Phil!!

  • This was a very very special time. To be in Philly for the Spring shows every year meant the first few warm days of the season and hearing songs like Box of Rain and Unbroken Chain on WMMR during the day when you were running around town or meeting old friends. Everyone heard they played it in Hampton, and everyone thought it was a one-time thing. No one expected this, and everyone was completely overjoyed by it.

  • awesome....so many memories...'such a long long time to be gone ..and a short time to be there!!!'

  • ur burnt

  • this is a very special song with a lot of meaningful images..i love it..means a lot to me.

  • Now if some genius out there with good audio of this segment could sync it up with this here video.......

  • looking for the secret, and searching for the sound................never fade.....

  • I was at The Dead show at the Sprectrum on May 1 this year, they did this as their encore...amazing.

  • Never too late indeed. Peace be with you all.

  • Why is it that a poor audio quality dead clip still instantly sends chills down my spine?....I don't really care, but I like it.

  • LOL I got chills too!

Ratdog ended their winter tour with this as an Encore. First time played by them

Phil is having fun doing this!

  • me too!!!!

  • went to the concert last night, last song of the night....tremendous

  • the older i get, the more i appreciate the dead. a little too late, huh?

  • its never too late brother

  • My favorite Dead song, and this was exactly one year before my birthday. For some reason, I find that cool.

  • That is a beautiful thing. The dead will never die ; )

  • paradox is just the way to describe such an incredible group

  • What's with the being a total dickhead? It's only people having fun - unlike you.

  • Shows at the 'Rectum in Philly! Memories... fuzzy memories...! I was at this one.

  • im only 29, never got to experience that , amazing thank god for youtube otherwise id never see this.

  • I'm almost 31, never did either. Finally saw them a few days ago for the 2009 tour. No Jerry, but a ton of fun. Fans were awesome, best group of people I have ever seen. All smiles, all dancing, all singing. Give it a try if they come to your area.

  • im 14 and i went to the dead show by giants stadium a couple months back. it was absolutely amazing, and everything i hoped it would be and then some

  • Your so lucky, that they chose to do the tour this spring/summer...... You got to see the band live (minus Jerry of course)- and take part in something thats been having such a strong influence on millions of people for the last 40 years.... VERY glad to know theres still young people out there who "get it", and recognize how magic these guys are especially when they play live music together... congrats !

  • I went to rothbury this summer and i'm 14 aswell :O

  • Yeah, I was at Hampton, too. I'll never know how I got so lucky.

  • Oh my! I was at this show! god bless the grateful dead!!!!!!

  • My first Spectrum show. For whatever reason, this show actually made this my favorite venue to see them at. What a ride and what a long strange trip it was!

  • I dedicate this song to my good friend Sammy Russell, gone 3 years ago today, he was such a fan, I watched the video, cuz I know he was there! I miss you something awful. I guess your hangin' wth Gerry now! RIP 3/19/2006
