Was at this show. The crowd was abuzz because a few nights before they played this song for the first time 14 or 15 years. The crowd went nuts...the screaming and cheering is not so clear on the video.
@dfleonard The Grateful Dead readily admitted that they had off nights and off songs. This organic, not always polished sound, was one component that made them so freaking awesome.

what exactly is a box of rain?? is that something that happens when you smoke marijauana laced cigarettes and start to hallucinate? you see boxes of rain? i don' understand it all, at least with the Lady Gaga i know what she is talking about. a box of rain, wha???
@craismith A U serious what you don't know about the dead would fill a book. That is ok though. it is NOT ok to compare that stupid twat "lady" Gaga to the grateful dead. The dead were almost like a religion or supernatural exerpence I never cared for the dead too much until that cold rainy night in March of 1991 when I got my first Merical "free ticket" once inside the show I heard what they said and they stole the face right off my head.
@corn3rston3 dude what you said could make me cry. You perfectly summed it up. Very nice, thank you for being such a wise, genuine music lover, and understanding what music is really supposed to be and supposed to do for a person's soul.
I just stumbled onto this. I was at this show and close to this angle. I didn't see it, though, because I was crying so hard the tears were bouncing off my glasses. I cannot imagine being so high on the opportunity to hear Phil sing this song.
I remember this show. a bunch of us climbed up the wall and snuck in through a 2nd story window...tour was the only part of the 80s worth remembering.
i got goosebumps. Not from the song - I usually prefer to listen to an LP or an mp3 than listen to a live recording - but from the LOVE in the crowd. Oh man, I wish I was alive to see these guys play live.
I was standing above and behind the stage. There was a pause and it looked as though they were not sure what they wanted to play. So I yelled out "Box of Rain!" real loud --(you can barely hear it in this but I think I can) ---and then Phil talks 'em into it. Phil turned around and looked right at me when I yelled it. I wish this clip started earlier. Does anybody have a continuous feed of the show?
I can remember this beautiful moment like it was yesterday. The crowd cheer when Phil sings, "A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you thru..." still brings a tear to my eye.

I've never been fond of Truckin' and that was what you would hear by them 80% of the time. But I'm keeping an open mind. I now like Ripple, and I first heard that one just recently.
Ok, they're no Fairport or Steeleye, but after 40 years I figure I can now come to some accommodation with them.
@ChengManChing That is the most lamest and unoriginal joke around. Only retards with no creativity that have to recyle garbage say that. Open your little stupid mind or come up with something original idiot.
Saw them the following week at the Hampton Coliseum (late March 1986) where they played for three nights. My friend and I were blown away at the crowd and how good the band sounded. I feel fortunate to have seen them on this tour...definitely a concert I'll never forget. The Hampton Coliseum was also one of the great concert arenas back in the day!

This was a very very special time. To be in Philly for the Spring shows every year meant the first few warm days of the season and hearing songs like Box of Rain and Unbroken Chain on WMMR during the day when you were running around town or meeting old friends. Everyone heard they played it in Hampton, and everyone thought it was a one-time thing. No one expected this, and everyone was completely overjoyed by it.
I'm almost 31, never did either. Finally saw them a few days ago for the 2009 tour. No Jerry, but a ton of fun. Fans were awesome, best group of people I have ever seen. All smiles, all dancing, all singing. Give it a try if they come to your area.
Your so lucky, that they chose to do the tour this spring/summer...... You got to see the band live (minus Jerry of course)- and take part in something thats been having such a strong influence on millions of people for the last 40 years.... VERY glad to know theres still young people out there who "get it", and recognize how magic these guys are especially when they play live music together... congrats !
My first Spectrum show. For whatever reason, this show actually made this my favorite venue to see them at. What a ride and what a long strange trip it was!
I dedicate this song to my good friend Sammy Russell, gone 3 years ago today, he was such a fan, I watched the video, cuz I know he was there! I miss you something awful. I guess your hangin' wth Gerry now! RIP 3/19/2006
You're a horrible waste of skin. Fucking rascist faggot. No doubt you're a moron. I'm ashamed to be from the South knowing there is scum such as yourself l

Why is it that a poor audio quality dead clip still instantly sends chills down my spine?....I don't really care, but I like it.

My favorite Dead song, and this was exactly one year before my birthday. For some reason, I find that cool.
