Love this song, but your video description is wrong. I was listening to an inteview that Bobby did in Hong Kong today. He says that Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard discovered them and told Berry. He also hates Diana Ross.
@DetroitLives313 It just shows that stories you hear are not always correct! I had heard this years ago too, I'll correct the foreword, thanks for putting me right on this much appreciated. I wish I'd have heard that interview too, I always wonder what happened to them all too don't you? Cheers, JOHN
@DetroitLives313 Thanks, you are very kind. If I'd have lived in the US I reckon I would have worked for Motown I'm sure in the 60's but I live here in the UK and I do like living here too :-) JOHN
wow...i never knew Tommy wrote this or that he was in a band..
this was one of my fav songs..was just shy of 15 yrs. old but had lived enough to be 25 yrs. old..way ahead of my yrs..but hey when you are 1 of 9 kids born in S.C. to Cherokee folks and your pop is a drunk who sells you for $25 at 3 days old..u learn to grow up fast eh? I had lived a lifetime by the time this came out...got one of those "stranger than fiction" stories for a life..but i'm a good girl with a good attitude..yeah...lol
@bperezful sure did, he wrote this because he dated black girls in the 50's and the band was kicked out of town because of a gig that got out of hand Thats why they changed their name from The Calgory Shades. Then they kicked Chong out and he smoked his first joint give to has as a parting gift from the bassest.
By the way if anyone would happen to know what I should pay for a Gordy Label 45 of this tune?
Purple yellow label and reverse side is Fading away. #G-7069 dated 1968.
I know a fella that has one but he wants $15 for it. It plays fine but cosmetically a G or G+ with label sort of faded but legible. Is $15 about right on this vintage record?
@BadNews88 Glad to see the word finally getting out about Bobby Taylor being the one who actually brought the Jackson5 to Berry Gordy. Of course it was all about Diana Ross for Berry. I hope he at least got a "finder's fee. Probably not.
Wow, I'm like a number of other people who grew up loving this song, never knowing it was about an interracial couple....I was with some friends this evening listening to some Old School stuff and this came up...came home and looked it up! Certainly dealt with a very sensitive topic! Awesome song!!!! Thanks for posting!
Cheech and Chong were actually at soaring eagle casino and resort last weekend, and Tommy Chong played his guitar solo for "Does your mama know about me"
I looked for this song for so long. It is absolutely one of the greatest love songs of all time. I did not understand that this was about race relations when I was young. I just thought he cared so much that he needed to know if she told her mom so they can go together. Duhhh It's a lot of that going on today, you don't even think twice. Great song thanks for the memories.
Such a beautiful song. I remember being 7 when this song came out and I ended up buying it on a motown compilation at sears in the cut out bin. I still have that record and my original vinyl copy of Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers. I highly suggest anyone who enjoys this song to buy the import of The Bobby Taylor Anthology that has all his Motown recordings with and without The Vancouvers.
Had no idea that this song is about interracial relationship. Tommy Chong, formerly of Bobby Taylor's Vancouvers co-wrote the song (years before Cheech & Chong), and he was in a interracial relationship. His 2 daughters are so fine!
BRAVO!!! Great post!! I lived this song!!!

Tommy Chong, in tandem with The Much Regretted Tom Baird, peened this song.
Chong can also be heard as one of the intro backup vocalists on "So This Is Love", aslo by Bobby & The Vancouvers.
He also penned-on his own-"Look Before You Leap" for B.T. & The Vans. In the can till the deluxe 2006 2-CD anthology.
Moreover,it was Bobby Taylor who discovered the Jackson 5ive-Diana Ross was credited merely for marquee value, upon orders from Berry Gordy,of course.
Thanx fer the clip, m8..
