  • KONY 2012

  • this is the first vid that i've watched that Kai has not smashed his eyebrows together LOL

  • Bad thing about this is that you lose dynamic range. For best film scans I'd get the Pentax K-5, which has around 2 more stops of latitude than the 5D mark 2 has.

  • can you show us how to edit the film's picture into photoshop to give them colour?

  • its not working for me. my images are turning blue :(

  • Great video and this was shot on my birthday :D!

  • "Why don't you buy one now?" Currently I have a compact TRAVELER Super Slim XS8 and for tripod I have a cheapo konig kn19

  • I dont get it. isnt flatbed scanning faster than photographing it?!

  • "Why don't you buy one right now?" I don't even have a compact thanks to the economy.

I had to sell my DSLR next you know I'll be getting a polaroid and try to ask for money from people for bad polaroid street photos XD

  • When will you do a video on black and white?

  • i like the clapboard in the shelves. under scene it says shit. funny stuff.

  • photolab scans far much better in details, put both pictures in two different layers in photoshop and compare them, just to make it easy for u. stupid video and stupid comparison at the end where u give quality to 9 or 10 for 5d. learn to use your eyes better or quit this photography field. sorry but thats truth. people; watch pictures comparison in 1080hd.

  • Is there the possibillity that the film could overexpose and burn out due to lighting? I plan on using old film from around 10 years ago, but I'm afraid that the film will be ruined and overexposed.

  • @sam123486 After you develop film it will won't change, it won't expose or lighten anymore. As for using film from 10 years ago I wouldn't recommend it. It won't necessarily be worthless but it may have a slightly more mediocre quality than film made recently. Not to say this will happen with your film, it may still be perfectly fine. But in the future i'd go with film that's been made recently. Buy it at Walmart or Rite Aid. If you need specific ISO's and such go to your local camera shop.

  • Do I have to use a macro lens,can I use a standard 18-55mm kit lens?

  • @Tarisha3331 no because it wont focus at such a short distance

  • @Tarisha3331 u probably can, but ure minimum focusing distance will be really far

  • shame i just sold my DSLR

  • Il be glad to hold that iMac for you (in my house)

  • that was the least scientific table I've ever seen. Einstein would be ashamed to have his formula seen next to it.

  • are you kai and lok, chinese and is alamby a filipina? with aussie accents? :)

  • @urinmyhart alamby is australian

  • his method is ectually working with a cheapo tripot and a not-to-bad compact camera as well. my personal tip though: use an iphone or other smartphone instead of an imac or random lcd scren. they're usaly brighter and have a higher pixel density so you'll have less problems with seeing pixellines on the final 'scan'.

  • Hi Kai. Could u tell me how to convert negative image to positive picture in photoshop or lightroom please.

  • @jasonsitu Image>Adjustment>Invert

  • @jasonsitu press command or ctrl + i

  • @jasonsitu Ctrl+ i

  • "See the thing is most of you watching us will probably have a DSLR at home, and if you don't; why dont you buy one right now?" ---I would if I were rich like you. .___. :(

  • i found it didnt work for me.?????

  • Wow the 5Ds images are far better

  • or, SHOOT DIGITAL!!!!!!!

  • i'd let alamby massage my lettuce leafs ;)

  • scene SHIT

  • I have got to try this out. thanks

  • @MrPlaystationboy looks liks this but i don't they would be do happy with him lol

  • @MrPlaystationboy

    It's obviously not an M9.

  • @MrPlaystationboy m9 is strong enough

  • @MrPlaystationboy no sorry its not a m9... its a olympus pen-D

  • @MrPlaystationboy no,this is not his M9,you can clearly see it's not. what a shame for leica, being compared to a piece of something not to say s*th that is just laying around and being there just to hold a mac.

  • @MrPlaystationboy That's not a M9.

  • @MrPlaystationboy are you actually retarded?

  • @MrPlaystationboy its not an M9, he wouldn't do that, its a cheaper rangefinder of sorts

  • @MrPlaystationboy that is not a fucking leica.. are you that retarded? the m9 has a bloody screen on the back

  • @MrPlaystationboy actually*

  • @MrPlaystationboy It is M3. Get your facts right!

  • What is the name of the first background song that plays?? I ALWAYS hear it lol.

  • hey plz , i shot the negative film , but in my camera it stayed negative !! what should i do more , invert it ? plz help now :D

  • @gajetjoe yep invert it in photoshop or something like that.

  • how to correct the colour after shooting the film...reply as fast as possible~~

  • id scare alamby with my noodles ;)

  • Well.... you do need to develop the film prior to do this, which the photolab would do within that hour. convenience? just drop off the film and go grab a coffee...

  • Hmm, I wonder if my lower-end Sony A230 could do this. I'm gonna get a decent flatbed later on, but for the time being this could work nicely.

  • @HeavyWinds. It isn't necessary to use an Imac for the light source. He used that in the video because it was already there for him to use. He could have also gone outside to aim his dslr at the sky with no added cost. Or put a light on some white foam board and used that as his light source for about $1 at a hobbie store.

  • who was filming!?!?!

  • @ajkran2 me ;)

  • 5D's are hard to find. Will it work with a 1D? ;)

  • Sorry, I mean Kai

  • Alamby is terribly HILARIOUS: and really: DO TRY THIS AT HOME!

  • DSLR shots blew the highlights on the film

Dedicated non flatbed scanners have multi layered CCD's for colour not bayer interpolated.

  • @barryfitzgerald29 sorry to comment on an old post but what if this was on a Pentax K-5, which as 2 stops more DR than the 5D2. Shooting in 12 bit raw, wouldn't that be better than sending it in to scan?

  • Lol and if you don't why dont you buy 1? :D

  • @mil7osokar Kai edited the photos since they were raw and brought more colour to them

  • I think the DSLR results had better colors

  • He'd make a shitty teacher with that handwriting! hahah

  • @pjspelce most teachers have shitty handwriting

  • @mobspeak nah they dont care about it so u just have to deal with their shit :D

  • Alamby can massage my lettuce leafs with her chopsticks anyday... euh did that make any sense?

  • lol awesome

  • Wait, if Lok is playing billiard, who is filming?

  • @PedroLarock the boss maybe :D

  • @PedroLarock Key

  • @PedroLarock maybe alambi? hehe

  • @PedroLarock BRUUUUUUUMMMMMMM

  • @PedroLarock of course not all parts were taken at the same time.

  • What Kind Of Film IS He Using? Because Usually The FilmStrips i get back are negative and no color??? HELP PLEASE!!!

  • @emrodriguez25626 Its a slide film. Its ruthless if you get the exposure wrong, but the results are really great.

  • Lol Kai looks like Gok Whan!!!!! Lmao now he just has to make fat woman get naked and cry lol

  • Time for a new girlfriend.

  • Kai's simply the best presenter... in the world (in Jeremy Clarkson's accent). ;)

  • It does works but need a little bit of tweaking in photoshop

  • Please do some Wacom tablet tips/tricks/intro video.

  • kai, which university did you study at? and are you a fan of jeremy clarkson?

  • @JamesLovesGabz - And the word "Starbucks" itself completely uncovered.

  • The only reason it should take a lab an hour to put already developed film on a cd is if they are absolutely swamped with customers. I work in a lab myself and that would maybe take 3 minutes to do.. max. Even if we have to develope the film before we burn the CD it only takes like 24 minutes.

  • @Str82yoDome The turnaround time for the lab I go to... 3 working days to develop and scan. Ugh. 1 hour is nothing.

  • LCD display's backlight doesn't have full color gamut. Even apple displays.

  • OMG KAI IS BALD!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @JamesMontour YES! I shouldnt even need to explain it, think about what goes on when you take a picture

  • Comment removed

  • @JamesMontour My bad if i came off somewhat rude or insane. Its just that until film is developed its not sealed in. Opening your film to light before developing it is like painting a picture and then throwing paint at it. You should take a class of your asking questions like that lol

  • @JamesMontour YES

  • that is awesome thanks dude

  • 我的 午饭啊!

  • 1:56 epic fail lol

  • lol @ e=mc2

  • yeah, great hair for summer

  • @6:13 you need the Mac App Caffeine!

  • He used the Olympus Pen D to prop up the iMac screen. A Canon 5D-MKII to photograph the negatives.

  • @artformsphoto You forgot about the Imac being used as a lamp..If you add all those up, you would have money to buy a film scanner.

  • @HeavyWinds

    how about your smart phone?

actually my phone is smart it can do the work like the Mac (not tested) but sure it does.

  • "...and a woman takes a baby into develop". hahahahhahahahahahhaaaaaaaaaa

  • @PoesKlap133 Were you watching the same vid as the rest of us?

  • @shess0501 How, exactly?

  • Pointing exactly at the subscribe button...

  • the scans from the lab are sharper (you can read the sign on the second photo down left)

but the colors from the raw files are a lot better!

  • did he developed this film cause i thought if you scan a film undeveloped you ended losing your photos?

i am just asking question :D

  • @aeroxtreme15 that is correct. undeveloped film can still be exposed for more images, so if you try to scan undeveloped film then well, prepare to say bye bye to whatever is on that roll.

  • beauttiful handwriting ;D

  • that second cue lok is using is called a poofter stick in australia.

  • Hm. Nice whistle in the left corner of the whiteboard. Nice.

  • She didn't finish her food?! What a waste...

  • Cool vid, I'm going to try this. I think this works on processed film, you just scan it with your dslr and do a inverse color thingy, I think...

  • This is SCANNING the film, not developing. Developing and scanning film are two very different things, people.

  • It's Kai Mk. III! With a new shiny head!

  • his hair is the best thing about this video.

  • How do you do this without ruining the film...?

  • what kind of negatives are that anyway? mine are on orange film material and have inverted colors...no sense to take photos of that stuff.

  • i thot he was holding the ipad for the whole time.... -.-

  • freak :D

  • taking Alamby to lunch would end with me finishing dinner... >.>

  • alamby i love you

  • Kai finally got a haircut

  • Alamby: the FASTEST slow eater in the world!!!

  • Alamby is so awesome!

  • arent film strips in negative?

  • @AsianStvex thats what the post processing was for :)

  • New Hair ! :D

  • Well young man I suppose your too young to remember slide copies. An apparatus a person could attach to there macro lens & shoot away. Someone should invent one of these for DSLRs don't you think? Thank you for this fun adaptation to an old idea.

  • scanning with dslr is allright if you use reversal film or black and white negative. To be honest I use it too with my black and whites. but while scanning color negatives the whole processing part makes it difficult as hell. or maybe I'm too lazy to work too much in PS on color negatives. especially when scanning in a lab costs around 5 PLN (it's something around 1,5 USD).

and Hashimagha1, shooting analog just makes me more fun. and I LOVE to shoot portraits on 35mm Black and Whites.

  • @hangmann89 I love shooting in film. B&W film especially, the tones are just to die for. What do you use for your portraits? I usually load Tri-X in.

  • @Arktos08 I do not have any favourite film. I try to use different brand each and every time. From those I took i liked the most Kodak Professional 400, but next time i'll load in Tri-X:)

  • why would u even use film if u have gor a DSLR, :S...this is so stupid!

  • @Hashimagha1

Uhm.. for the people who want their negatives scanned to digital... ?

  • @TwoRussianNoobs I shoot with a DSLR, a SLR and a rangefinder. Shooting in film can improve your digital shooting skills, as you learn to be more patient and more aware of things like your composition. Once you click your shutter, there's no turning back unlike a digital medium.

  • what the fuck is a "photo lab' and a CD?

  • like this if u like his new hair

  • He also got the Angry Bird Fever..

  • Kai's new haircut

  • OMG... Kai you really resemble the Asian version of Jeremy Clarkson, screw DigitalRev, make Top Gear Asia!

  • hahah is that how u normally speak ... or is thay ur host voice

  • I was cringing when I saw how Kai was handling the film.

  • Does Lambi eat meat?

  • Don't be dumb and just go to a pro lab. Worth every penny and can do things a dSLR can't do.

  • 02:18 the brand name is visible

  • Hey guys we can do the thing with an ipad isead with our laptops :D

  • Rich People, Drum Scanners lol

  • I've had about 10 rolls scanned & developed over 18 months, it's really hard to get them to tell you how many MP you'll get, and the basic scans are 2MP, not good enough. Eventually I found a big chain dept store that would scan them at 9MP cheaply, but you're still looking at $20 a roll.

And good luck doing negatives with a DSLR, I think Kai was scanning slide film. Good luck with keeping your film scratch free too! Buy a slide duplicator.

  • They make a tool for this. It's called a slide copier. It's a monorail, bellows, and film holder.

  • That is the most scientific summation I have ever witnessed.

  • Whats the music that comes in at 06:55 ?

  • @TwoRussianNoobs archiving.

  • thing is, when you dont have an DSLR like for example me, you probably like much more these tutorials, then watching reviews :}

  • wil a APS chip sensor dslr work just as well?

  • Why would you bother scanning color film like this when you have to go to the lab for developing anyway?

  • @Rinc4wind why would you have to go to the lab to develop when you have a digital copy of it in your computer?

  • @Daisygocrazy What? :> You have to develop the film before you can do anything else with it. And for color films is used process c41 which you can hardly achieve at home therefore you have to go to the lab.

  • @Daisygocrazy and to have a digital copy you would have to develop the film in the first place.

  • @Arktos08 I'm pretty sure this video was meant to be useful for old film negatives you have lying around. Or else, no there would be no point.

  • @Rinc4wind - I imagine it's because one can actually make adjustments to the image using a computer and a RAW file, while you can't if you just bring film to the store to get developed.

  • @BeerUserSince1992 I don't see the point in using raw file. You can't really get any more detail from a photo of a photo. :] And color adjustments are easily done with jpeg.

  • kai do more lens reviews please

  • What is that green nikon?

  • @BennyDanny It's a crappy pentax DSLR. The white one

  • @xximanoobxx I'm asking about the green one.. what kind of nikon is..

  • @BennyDanny Believe me, it's a pentax k-r. Watch their review on it. At the end, they put puffy green stuff over it.
