Why would god have a need, in his manuscript for human morality, for determin the age of the earth ? If he wanted modern man to believe in him, all he had to do was (3000 years ago)insert e = mC2 . So millions of years (it's actually billions) is just asserted without evidence?? May I suggest some fields of study where you might find more than just assertions. Physics, geology, astronomy, palaeontology, biology, genetics, dendrochronology, cosmology and..oh. I don't know, frikin' basket weaving!! The most attractive thing about being a religious fool is you can just say stuff that has no real basis in reality and legions of other fools will just agree with you.
In support that gen 1 and 2 are primarily symbolical is the second creation in the end of the Bible with the new Jerusalem. That one is quite obviously symbolical with the tree of life and everything. The Bible is not so concerned with how the world was created but more with WHY!
Its strange that no creationists bring up Gen 2. There we have the reversed account with man created first, then plants, then animals and lastly woman. Why is Gen 1 the scientific blueprint and not Gen 2? If they are taken literal then one must be wrong. If they are theological stories however order serves a diffrent purpose. In both cases its that humans are the crown of Gods creation but also beneath him.
