Hey Steve, would setting my gains with a 40 Hz wave have any affect on really low frequency response or can you set everything with a lower frequency??
@SuperBrandango I wouldnt get the cap I would recommend upgrading your electrical system. Most cars can only take like 400 rms or something like that. a new alt and battery and the big 3 would get rid of that dimming effect for sure. I tried getting a cap to stop dimming it just made my lights dim more, but my system hit harder. All the cap does is hold extra power for your amp. It has to get the power from your electrical system its kinda like having 2 amps instead of 1 running on your stock.
hi, ok i have a orion 2500d, i want to set it like this, im using the amp at 1 ohm, but when set this way the amp will be showing no load, so wah i want to know is will the amp clip the same at 1ohm, and at no load ? so if i set it up this way, it will still be right when in use, not as clver as you so i hope you understand what im trying to ask.
Steve, why is it that you connected the o scope leads (only to one of the RCA's outputs) instead of to the pair? You did it for the sub RCA's too, any particular reason why you connected it up that way, ??
Damn, you could have class session for car audio dummies once a week or somethin'. Bet you'd get even more viewers than you already have! More views, more money. I just learned from this, i'm a car audio "noob" so this was new to me. Thanks for all the work you've put in though. Very inspirational.
Hey Steve when I have the oscope hooked up to my sub amp should I have the bass knob turned all the way up or down when setting the gains and the xover. Thanks
Just wanted to let you know how cool Rockford really is I called them up to buy one of the 3sixty.2 disks and they gave it to me for free. Now that is awsome customer service.
hey just wanted to double check on how you have your probes hooked up. it looks to me like you have the negative on the outer part of the RCA and the positive on the inner part of the RCA. also, both probes are hooked up to a single RCA. Thank.s
wat up steve,my name is randall a.k.a rated.r from alabama and,i wish i can hear ur system in person but can't travel at the time cuz i'm unemployed.i done heard 1 18'' b4 and dat was beating pretty damn good.i can only imagine what 4 or 8 18'' sounds like.well 4 now keep up da good work.
some clip at half (or less) some clip at 3/4 and some dont clip at all......thats why its important to use a scope so you can SEE it rather then just guessing. If you do the 3/4 volume "rule of thumb" you could be hurting your system or leaving a bunch of output out on the table either way - gotta scope it! :)
i didn't read through the all the comments but I wanted to add a note, were you testing the subwoofer output with the sub level control on the deck at 0? or at it's max when it would be outputting it's max voltage?
Okay he shows how to not clip - but what exactly is it and how does it effect my system? He says you cannot really hear clipping you can only find it with an oscilloscope, so what's the harm? Is it more of a performance thing than a real audible issue?
good video man, keep videos like this coming, please! I just got done installing a sound system in my legend coupe, that includes 6.5" infiniti kappa fronts and a TMA T500.1 amp powering a single 12" audiobahn.
I dont know where to set my gains so i set them at about 40% and use the bass boost to adjust the sub volume. I hope your videos will help me set it up right. Thanks again.
i have a question. i just got a 200w kicker amp installed for my front door speakers and 6x9s. today, the speakers on the right side of the car were fading in and out of sound. when the sound was out the subwoofers weren't hitting either. does anyone have any clues why it might be doing this?
Yeah but when you set your gains;it is suppose to match the voltage on the deck for example,a pioneer deck is 2V then you set your gains too match that like how Steve showed us.BTW the gain is not a volume knob like the one on the deck :]
Wondering if ur gonna show how to properly wire 2 amps, i have been trying to do this and having no luck. i get a high pitched hum and whining through my fronts and rear speakers when i try to use 2 amps, and when i tap on the breaks, i get a bomb sound from my fronts and rears, when the 2nd amp is unpluged it works fine, with no whining in the speakers or boom from the brakes, searched high and low for a solution can't figure it out, A 2 amp install vid would be helpfull . thanks!
But can't you tell through the sub-woofer excursion? My subs move awkwardly when I clip them. I also got a newbish Clip L.E.D. indicator on my amplifier lol
I've never heard about being able to see clipping through your subs excursion, but even if that were the case, by the time your clipping got that bad, you would already be clipped more than enough to blow your speakers and or sub. Using this method will pick it up before you could ever hope to hear it (or see it if that is in fact possible).
I can see it with my own eyes. I only clip it for like a minute at the most so the voice coil doesn't really even get warm. However my power wires do lol
You can't see clipping. Clipping is just what this vid is, a square wave instead of sine wave giving what ever you have attached to it ~sqrt(2) times the power. Potentially damaging your equipment.
and what exactly did you "see" that leads you to think that?? i just showed ya' in black and white, plain as day the squared wave (clipped) vs the new, clean one.
When my amplifier gets clipped, my subs seem to do some "unnecessary excursion". I can't really describe it but it just doesn't do it when I don't clip it.
ok did I miss something, or, did he say how to set your gain on the amp up? because I only saw him mess with the volume on the deck to see if it was clipping or not.
But how do you set the gain on the amp properly?
The volume on the headunit with what gain on the amplifier???
Some music is made clipped. Even big name stuff. If you were bumping that at your max regular volume (like what was set in the video), would it be more likely to damage your speakers? Or is it only when the deck/amps are overloading it that it does that?
If u could help me i would greatly appreciate it. My subs always clip. Make a loud knocking noise inside the box. The guiys at my audio shop said it cuz im putting the volume to loud. I say its bulllshit...
nope 1 is a spare 26, the other is an old 26 i stole from Chickens ride (he fu#cked up the other 3 :D i got a spare 26" tire out of the deal so i dont mind - saved me 600 bux!
Wow, You just keep coming up with more and more?? I love it! And thanks for showing how to do that. I knew what a clipped wave meant and would look like, but never knew how to test for it. Cool, thanks!
haha did anyone notice that he says "ok lets try to do this without hurting anything" then at about 7:05 the word "OUCH" pops up on the oscope display! lol
I notice it says to turn off all equalization / bass boosts etc. when testing for clipping, But what happens when your done testing and decide to turn on the EQ / bass boost etc? Would that introduce clipping at a lower volume?
good question - i think if you KNOW your gonna turn those up a little, then it prob would be a good idea to re-test it with the bass and treble up where u would normally put them. If there is any difference ie it starts clipping, you know THAT is your new volume number to stop at
