First of all, Hetfield is a much better personality and singer than LaBrie (although Labrie fits dream theater better). Second, alot of Dream Theater's material takes alot more focus to appreciate and love. You can't expect a 43:00 song to be more popular than a 5:00 song (despite the fact that it could be one of the most brilliant songs ever).

@retriever7746and2 yes and no. You might like Hetfield more, but he most definately is not a better vocalist. Perhaps his style fits you more, thats taste, but technique wise and all that, no one comes near someone like LaBrie. Not my kind of style vocal wise either (to mention my icons: Robb Flynn, Max Cavalera, Corey Taylor, Mark Hunter, Troy Sanders and more) however LaBrie is a better singer hands down.
Vocals aren't the best, but overall the cover was better than original, DT are a better band, although Machine Head's covers beats all Battery covers.

LaBrie singing Battery sounds "ok", Hetfield singing something like "innocence faded" would sound hilarious and painfull.

The difference is Motorhead and Metallica are top tier bands and much as I admire DT they are not in that league (top tier as defined by recognition, influence and power within the music industry). The only time Metallica cover lower tier bands is if they came before them. The only song they covered on any of the garage albums that was post 1984 was Loverman by Nick Cave but they formed in 83 so they fit the motif. So no, they should not cover a DT song.

You're forgetting the fact that DT didn't create 5 classic albums like Metallica did. They're good at their instruments but it takes more than that to create timeless music. even if images and words is regarded as a classic, that's still 4 less than metallica

@retriever7746and2 yes and no. You might like Hetfield more, but he most definately is not a better vocalist. Perhaps his style fits you more, thats taste, but technique wise and all that, no one comes near someone like LaBrie. Not my kind of style vocal wise either (to mention my icons: Robb Flynn, Max Cavalera, Corey Taylor, Mark Hunter, Troy Sanders and more) however LaBrie is a better singer hands down.

@Aviii Hmm... Got nothing against Trujillo. Maybe he would, but never seen Trujillo play on the same technical level as John. All the bands Trujillo was in were just ''heavy metal bands'' nothing technical or progressive. I would agree that both bands are great and to be quite honest I like Metallica's song a little more.

@rufus566 Metallica will not cover a DT song because DT is not an influence of Metallica. And I honestly think none of the Metallica members would be able to play most of the Dream Theater songs. Heltfield simply doesn´t have the vocal range required to sing Dream Theater songs just like LaBrie lacks the thick manly sound to sing trash metal properly. LaBrie singing Battery sounds "ok", Hetfield singing something like "innocence faded" would sound hilarious and painfull.

The difference is Motorhead and Metallica are top tier bands and much as I admire DT they are not in that league (top tier as defined by recognition, influence and power within the music industry). The only time Metallica cover lower tier bands is if they came before them. The only song they covered on any of the garage albums that was post 1984 was Loverman by Nick Cave but they formed in 83 so they fit the motif. So no, they should not cover a DT song.

@dimebag4ever426 Actually you need to specify a little more on what you mean by better, Kirk Hammett pales in comparison to Petrucci, however when it comes to rhythm work, very few guitarists can down pick faster than Hetfield though. He's very underestimated.
