How did you map the box? When I try it, the texture overlaps the box edges and I can't get the alpha to render.

Simple, for the bottom "Plane" you take a clean Plate (i.e. without the box) or if thats not possible, you remove it in photoshop. Its not automatics, its a method! But the same methodology has been used in digital matte painting that are 2.5D effects such as in "Lord of the Rings" and many other films etc. Hope that helps! :)

how would it know when texture to show on the news paper from behind the box in the original image. I can see how it would work with simple texture but there is text and pictures on the news paper
