Aha - I had a rope that went from the main anchor line (about 5 m from the bow) that came aft into the boat and was secured round a cleat in the boat so all I had to do was pull on that rope to get the main anchor line in my hand. I never went to the bow at all as there is no access to it other than by swimming round.
