  • "...small bands of Negroes..."

  • The best solution to all race riots is to send them back to their HOMELAND and they can sing FREE AT LAST, GOD ALMIGHTY,WE ARE FREE AT LAST! That way all races are with their own and no more racism! Race mixing don't work it causes RIOTS!

  • Millburn Shorthills a lot better

  • A lot of Irvington looks like that now

  • I was 6 years old during this, and I still remember it all too well.

Despite the wide spread destruction along Springfield, and South Orange Avenues, damage downtown was minimal. The wounds to downtown were slow to develop, but by the early 70's, businesses and stores started to leave in droves. This left even fewer jobs for Newark residents. Newark never fully recovered from the riots, and I don't think it will ever.

  • And as a result, Newak has been a real shit hole ever since...way to go..

  • @tman10003 -it was pretty bad b4

  • My question is will history repeat itself ? The overwhelming frustration with the political environment the lack of jobs, lack of educational programs and the people who want to rule this country in the next 4 years and cut all programs and provide no health care, lower wages This can lead to a repeat of history this time it will be between the have and have not

  • Newark riot had nothing to do with a white man shooting a prominent black leader the riot had to do with a group of people standing together due to being fed up with police brutality...At that time jews owned everything and they were charging outrageous prices and interest on credit given to blacks in Newark thats the cause of the businesses being burned and looted. My family owned arcades, stores and laudromats and none of those were burned nor looted. you can only be unjust for so long!!

  • Brings back alot of memories.. So Sad.. Newark was and Is a Great City

  • so are the snipers they refer to, military, or rioters shooting at soldiers?

  • I would recommend period music, and at a lower volume to hear the narration, apart from that this is really good stuff!

  • The background music makes it hard to hear the commentary! Other than that, the footage is one of the best I've seen. It's difficult to look at and stomach, but I need to know more about my city, my birthplace! Thank you for putting this piece together!

  • Just burn down your own fucking neighborhood down thats really smart.

  • This was a miraculous and well designed documentary with first hand look of the riots of this troubled city. I am young and know no one who was involved in this but the job I work now which is public service in Newark has brought me to many people who explained the travesty and scarring it has left on that tragic day. MJones, outstanding production.

  • how would you know where you 're going if you dont know where you came from?

  • VERY TRUE YANNELLI

  • This Was When I was Born My Mom was about to have me!

  • people migrated from the south in great numbers, and city planners thought it was good to put up very large apt buildings to house a lot of people. BUT THERE WERE NOT JOBS! When people have jobs it's a different story. I lived there, I am 54 yrs old now and I hope our "Bush Depression" doesn't get any worse. People need jobs!!

  • wow i saw everything out the window the fires the breaking in the stores... i remember my mom sat us ( my brother and sisters ) in the tub because the shots were coming thru the windows. i lived on 7th ave and stone street. ( the columbus homes projects )

  • So did conditions improve after the riots? Are there still rotten, ugly wodden three decker tenements?

  • my mom was there... she talks about it time after time.

  • I was almost four when this happened and yet I remember it vividly.
