Not really. You'd be amazed what an EV trained Pidgey, or any EV trained Pokemon for that matter, is capable of. Not only that, but Blastoise doesn't get a stab with Blizzard. AND, it's easy to EV a poke'mon in speed and attack early on.

Overall, that Blastoise may not have been as good as you think. Coupled with average stats, that Blastoise would've lost either way.

I like how Red saved Charizard for last. He's very powerful in the show and he probably still doesn't listen to Ash.

Charizard went full-out on Pidgey and came real close to finishing him off in one hit AND burned him.
