Two of the finest musicians on the planet. And as otherworldly as Chris Thile is, don't think for a second that Mike Marshall can't keep up with him. Those two are some glorious musicians.
Isn't that just amazing. What else can you say? I don't have enough adjectives. As to the comments about their facial expressions, they used to give Clarence White a hard time for standing there stone-faced while he did impossible things on a guitar. LOL who cares? I say if you can make this kind of music you can make any face you want.
Steve Lukather (the guitarist of Toto) said on his facebook page: Could be one of the most insane awesome things I have seen and heard in decades.. I am awe-struck by this amazing performance.. wow!
anyone see mandolins at midnight? It was these two along with Hamilton de Hollanda at wintergrass a few years back. Stumbling onto this one reminded me of that show.....spectacular.
@jbrad1211 I think you can find a Dudenbostel for around $30K, but not a Gibson Loar (Gibson F5s made between 1921 and 1924). Those will run you between $100k (for one with issues) up to the quarter million-dollar one that Chris bought. Kind of scary, when you think about it. I can't imagine being the guardian of such an instrument!
@gwoman6071 Dudenbostel was taking orders for mandolins a while back- $25k for a brand new one. yikes. makes me glad I play the dobro- its rare to see one that sells for more than $10k, vintage or not. and you can get plenty of great sounding dobros for under $5k if you know where to look.
@jbrad1211 He was playing one of his Dudenbostels in this vid, because it was taken a while ago. Since about 2008 or so he's been playing a 1924 Gibson F-5, from the Lloyd Loar era. I heard somebody found it under the bed of the first owner's house, and it had been almost untouched for 85 years. They say Thile paid a mint for it, but it's a stunningly beautiful instrument. Indicentally, Mike Marshall's Lloyd Loar Gibson was signed ("born") on the same day as Thile's.
@gwoman6071 a mint and then some- the dealer who found Thile's Loar mandolin is a friend of a friend, and said he paid around a quarter of a million dollars for it. also said it's a mint example of a Loar mandolin, though.
Your expertise with a mandolin is not dictated by how fast you can strum, how accurate you can finger your notes, or even how melodic your solos are.- It's weather you are Chris Thile or not!
@floater156 That's kind of harsh, calling them losers. They're not even thinking about how their faces appear. With Chris, the faces he makes while playing have a lot to do with just letting his body enter into the music and react to the movement and dynamics of his and Mike's playing. When you're fully engaged in the spirit of the music, your face reacts to the sounds being created. It's a wonderful thing!
@monologtube Yes - when ignoramuses ridicule musicians' facial expressions, I always tell them it's the same as if you're in a car that's just hit a HUGE area of ice and suddenly you have no control of your destiny, and every speck of your concentration shifts to what you're doing _there at that moment_. This is exactly what Mike and Chris are experiencing: they're 200% locked into the present moments of the music they're creating. Imagine your face in that hell-bound car! Same thing.
I don't think I could move my fingers that fast if even I hooked a 12 volt car battery to my elbow! Lordy! That's really fantastic. I'm with ya, I don't think I have enough years left!
the two best on earth....they are so far beyond all other mandolin players, it's unbelievable....as a mando player, I've studied about everyone you can imagine, these guys are the absolute, without a doubt, BEST!
i have actually played with statman, you're preaching to the preacher my friend....these guys have a much better tone and are much more precise in their playing...

@wankatronic Yep. That's the "mint" I was referring to. I saw a Gibson Loar for sale for $98k once, but that's about the lowest price I've seen.

@floater156 They look like "mentally disabled" maybe cause they are genius and all the genius are crazy. Like Einstein for example or Jimi hendrix.
