  • Sometimes all you can say about a musical performance is HOT DAMN!

  • Insanity.

  • I want more and in HD

  • Two of the finest musicians on the planet. And as otherworldly as Chris Thile is, don't think for a second that Mike Marshall can't keep up with him. Those two are some glorious musicians.

  • Just. Wow.

  • I hope they ate something afterwards

  • you should see my face and they play a million times better than me

  • Isn't that just amazing. What else can you say? I don't have enough adjectives. As to the comments about their facial expressions, they used to give Clarence White a hard time for standing there stone-faced while he did impossible things on a guitar. LOL who cares? I say if you can make this kind of music you can make any face you want.

  • I am agog. O_O

  • BRILL

  • 1:15 crazy!

  • Steve Lukather (the guitarist of Toto) said on his facebook page: Could be one of the most insane awesome things I have seen and heard in decades.. I am awe-struck by this amazing performance.. wow!

  • That's art. No, it's beyond art -- it's Godstuff.

  • Holy fuck....

  • anyone see mandolins at midnight? It was these two along with Hamilton de Hollanda at wintergrass a few years back. Stumbling onto this one reminded me of that show.....spectacular.

  • Two persons didn't like this video...i'm sure they were some kind of jealous guitar players! LOL

  • Lovely arrangement!

  • pure beauty

  • you might as well call this "Mike Marshall and Chris Thile are better at mandolin than everyone else in the human race". good god....

  • you might as well call this "Mike Marshall and Chris Thile are better at mandolin than everyone else in the human race"

  • @gwoman6071 Thanks for the update. Heard that some Loar's are over $30,000.

  • @jbrad1211 I think you can find a Dudenbostel for around $30K, but not a Gibson Loar (Gibson F5s made between 1921 and 1924). Those will run you between $100k (for one with issues) up to the quarter million-dollar one that Chris bought. Kind of scary, when you think about it. I can't imagine being the guardian of such an instrument!

  • @gwoman6071 Dudenbostel was taking orders for mandolins a while back- $25k for a brand new one. yikes. makes me glad I play the dobro- its rare to see one that sells for more than $10k, vintage or not. and you can get plenty of great sounding dobros for under $5k if you know where to look.

  • That has got to be the greatest thing I've ever watched on youtube . must watch again... and again...

  • well that didn't suck very much at all

  • Wholly cow... that's jammin'...

  • How could you not want to play mandolin after watching this?!

I teach mandolin, but I can't play like these guys...

    must...practice...more...scales...!

  • He plays a Dudenbostel mandolin mostly, but he plays other mandolins at times.

  • @jbrad1211 He was playing one of his Dudenbostels in this vid, because it was taken a while ago. Since about 2008 or so he's been playing a 1924 Gibson F-5, from the Lloyd Loar era. I heard somebody found it under the bed of the first owner's house, and it had been almost untouched for 85 years. They say Thile paid a mint for it, but it's a stunningly beautiful instrument. Indicentally, Mike Marshall's Lloyd Loar Gibson was signed ("born") on the same day as Thile's.

  • @gwoman6071 a mint and then some- the dealer who found Thile's Loar mandolin is a friend of a friend, and said he paid around a quarter of a million dollars for it. also said it's a mint example of a Loar mandolin, though.

  • @wankatronic Yep. That's the "mint" I was referring to. I saw a Gibson Loar for sale for $98k once, but that's about the lowest price I've seen.

  • I love all the comments regarding the 'weird faces', as if any of the commenters know what it means to be genius musicians.

  • Your expertise with a mandolin is not dictated by how fast you can strum, how accurate you can finger your notes, or even how melodic your solos are.- It's weather you are Chris Thile or not!

  • My God those are some serious fucking chops! Not referring to the sideburns. Simultaneous soloing has never sounded so good, thanks for posting!

  • I've been playing music for over 50 years and these guys are great!

  • I keep coming back to this video!

  • Phenomenal.

  • ummmm. wow. What can you say? These guys are amazing.

  • acoustic mandolin at its best. This is awesome stuff!!

  • These guys are monsters.

  • Chris Thile is the bomb!!!!!! Could watch him play all day!

  • Master musicians. Point.

  • wierd faces or not i like it verry mutch these guys are the best

  • Masterpiece!

  • absolutely mesmerizing!

  • Mike's right hand is so relaxed. Note the occasional pinky rest. A stunning performance.

  • Anyone know what brand and model of mandolin Chris Thile uses?

  • @NalydPenney I think the one he is using here is one of his Dudenbostle's.

  • The best I ever see

  • @floater156 That's kind of harsh, calling them losers. They're not even thinking about how their faces appear. With Chris, the faces he makes while playing have a lot to do with just letting his body enter into the music and react to the movement and dynamics of his and Mike's playing. When you're fully engaged in the spirit of the music, your face reacts to the sounds being created. It's a wonderful thing!

  • @monologtube Yes - when ignoramuses ridicule musicians' facial expressions, I always tell them it's the same as if you're in a car that's just hit a HUGE area of ice and suddenly you have no control of your destiny, and every speck of your concentration shifts to what you're doing _there at that moment_. This is exactly what Mike and Chris are experiencing: they're 200% locked into the present moments of the music they're creating. Imagine your face in that hell-bound car! Same thing.

  • @floater156 They look like "mentally disabled" maybe cause they are genius and all the genius are crazy. Like Einstein for example or Jimi hendrix.

  • @floater156 Why do you sound mentally disabled when you post? What a loser . . .

  • @floater156 That's called finding enjoyment in playing an instrument, and extremely well at that. Something you obviously cannot relate to.

  • SEAMLESS. I hope I can do this someday.

  • Now I know how electric guitarists felt when they first heard Jimi Hendrix and wondered what was wrong with their rigs.

  • They are a joy to watch! Weird. I do exactly the same thing with my feet when I'm playing. Must be a mandolin playing thing.

  • I don't think I could move my fingers that fast if even I hooked a 12 volt car battery to my elbow! Lordy! That's really fantastic. I'm with ya, I don't think I have enough years left!

  • Don't know if I have enough years left to get anywhere close to that good. I cant even think that fast any more. WOW!!

  • THEM ARE SOME CHOPS!

  • Fantastic!

  • amazing

  • Chris had his O-face on from 1:15 to 1:25 ;) love it

  • lol he looks retarded when he does that

  • damn-it-man!!

  • Pure listening pleasure! So glad I got to hear this!

  • smashin!!!

  • Chris comes out of the left speaker, Mike the right. Who mixed this?? Great performance. thanks fro sharing.

  • lol i was trippin on that

  • what a tasty jam :)

  • Gosh.

  • Amazing!

  • Absolutely incredible. Even Chris' backup wets my eye. 0.50 to 1.23...you judge!

  • OMG

having a hard time locating the bottom of my jaw

  • @toodance No kidding!

  • Thank You

  • hallucinant!

  • This totally saved my day... wow astounding..

  • wow.

  • absolutely phenomenal. Marshall, and Thile are so great together. David Grisman may still be my favorite though, I just love that Dawg Jazz

  • Its hard for me to imagine how well they understand the music and their skill at playing it.

    Mike is a great arranger.

  • F#$(($*$& ing genius
