  • What a team that was. Really one of the best ever

  • Dick Irvin sobbing in the background!

  • love th eflames

  • I can't believe that was 21 freakin' years ago.

As a Habs fan,I was disappointed but I was at a taverne watching the series and this game and everyone unanimously was happy for Lanny..He deserved it.

  • way to go out on top, Lanny!

  • Love Cole, love Habs losing more. Et le over

  • I remember that goal like it was yesterday, top shelve wear mom keeps the cookies . By far lanies best goal.

  • The print of this goal is in my office on wall behind me it was one of my greatest moments as a flames fan next to beating the habs for the cup and of course our "Red Mile"

  • Still one of the most iconic hockey images - Lanny running on his skates after that goal. I absolutely hate the Flames, but that gives me goosebumps every time I see it.

  • What a pass by Nieuwendyk!

  • His goal was not the game winner. Why do people always say that? I guess they didn't watch the game. It was goal 1 by Patterson, Lanny, then Glimour had the last 2 goals. Montreal's goals were Green and Lemieux. Then game ended 4-2 and Gilmour had the 3rd goal which was the winner.

  • You are right, ferret6677, Lanny's goal was not the game-winner. It should be known as the go-ahead goal, because the Flames never trailed thereafter.

Still, it was a great goal, and a great end to the playing career of a great guy.

In his 1987 autobiography, Lanny said that he would like to go out a Cup winner, like the great Jean Beliveau (who is also famous for charity work). Happily, this came to pass!

  • Lanny McDonald. What a guy. What a beard.

  • lanny is hot...his amazing playing just adds to his mustache power!

  • Calgary only has to play 63 more years to equal the Habs. Notice how they don't win many cups with a league of more than 6 teams.

  • OK....but how many others have won as many in a league with more than 6 teams?

  • I'm talking about Montreal winning most of their cups in a much smaller league than it is now. Some of their victories came when the league only had 6 teams. Same thing applies to Toronto. Virtually all the best players were Canadian and most of them wanted to play in Canada before money became an issue. Now these teams aren't so powerful because the odds and rules have changed. It's only fair to compare the teams when they both existed, meaning they both have 1 cup since the Flames' founding.

  • I'd concede that most of your points are on the mark....except that Mtl. has won 2 cups since the Flames moved to Calgary. What the two clubs do from here on will determine the rest.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot about the '93 championship. The victories would probably be equal if the Flames weren't ripped off on the game against Tampa. Then again, I'm starting to think that this is done on purpose to further promote the NHL in the US. Calgary and Carolina are my favorite teams, but I believe Montreal had some "bad" officiating against them after the first two games in '06. What American wants to watch two Canadian teams play for the Cup? Very low ratings.

  • The Mtl/Cgy series' in '86 and '89 were definitely among the lowest TV ratings ever for Stanley Cup finals, which grows more dependent on U.S. interest, not to mention greenbacks. The NHL definitely seems at a 'crossroads" and it looks like their choice is any available American resource to keep operations afloat. Personally, I felt the reason Montreal bowed in '06 was because the Canes figured out Carey Price.

  • three words, fuck that shit.

    lanny forever!

  • three words go habs go

  • That goal still hurts me to this day. This was the best team the Habs had since I was born (1979), but they lost to the best team in the NHL, that year (Flames). The Habs, without the OT/shootout rule, had a 115-point season, but the Flames had a 117-points. One of the rare Stanley Cup Finals with the best 2 teams going head-to-head in the last 25 years.

  • Well said.

  • Very well said.

  • You mean Gilmour's winner hurt you most. Lanny had the second goal of the game.

  • what does Bob Cole say right before Lanny scores? I think it's lub-dub...was he just too excited to get a real word out?

  • he said loob as in Hakan loob

  • did that goal give calgary the cup

  • it was the go ahead, but not the winner.

  • I have the print, in a frame, on the wall, of Lanny scoring this historic goal. I will never forget the moment or the 14 years of Season tickets. Love the Flames!

    From Steve Taylor

  • lanny mcdonald is just one of the greatest players ever ( and the one with the best moustache )

  • I first meet Lanny at the pengrowth saddledome in 1988 he was an awesome guy to talk to man

  • Lanny pwns!

  • I used to see Lanny once in a while when I worked at the Saddledome in Calgary. Super nice guy!

  • i saw him too my dad asked him to talk with me school

  • Lanny's all class, way to go out on top!

  • Nice vid, but Lanny did not get the winning goal, Doug Gilmour did. Lanny's goal made it 2-1, Gilmour scored later on to make it 3-1. Montreal scored late in the third to make it 3-2. Gilmour added an empty netter. So the third goal was the winner.

  • Yup! I was just about to mention this but you already corrected theonlyturekfan.

  • Heck yeah!!!! Lanny and Fleury : last of the greats.

  • Roy made the first move; he crouched- and Lanny fired over his shoulder. Lanny's first ever goal was scored in the Forum- and so was his last and greatest. Go Flames Go!

By the way, most of the this game is on Google-Video.

  • Thanks infofan. It's going to be my entertainment for the night.
